Hi from Ontario. 67 yr old man. I have been Canadian since my family emigrated from England when I was 7 1/2. My life has been saved, literally, at least twice by our medical system. I had a heart attack when I was 57. Ambulance and Paramedics arrived at our country house (12 kms from nearest town) in minutes (at ~1:30 am) , put me on ECG administered IV drugs while en route to the hospital - where an ER staff was waiting. Coronary event confirmed - I was not even taken off the ambulance gurney. My condition was confirmed stable and I was transported (by the same ambulance and crew) to a city another 30Km away where a cardiac surgeon and team were waiting. Parameds administered sedative and initial meds while travelling. Was in the OR and had a single stent installed. I was in recovery by 3:30. Hospital stay was 2 days - during which I picked up a couple of very good recipes from the catering service. My total out of pocket cost was the $75 ambulance charge. Next one: years ago I suffered a traumatic injury while working at my house on a Saturday afternoon (~2:00 pm). My left elbow went through an old plate glass storm window. Most of the flesh from my lower arm -- from just above the elbow to my wrist was sliced open and was hanging loose. Ambulance and Paramedics arrived in ~ 3 minutes (we had moved into town close to the same hospital that received me from heart attack). Doctors were waiting and again I was never taken off the gurney. While a nurse was installing a catheter in my femoral artery for transfusions I bled out when the damage artery in my arm ruptured. It was FAST. I saw a massive pool of blood on the floor and attempted to tell them. The monitors all went into alarm. Almost immediately my vision faded and I felt my legs and arms go cold as the veins in them collapsed. I heard someone say "No vital signs, BP - zero, pulse - zero. Cardiac arrest; start CPR. ." Then my hearing failed and I died. Nothing complete void. A few minutes later, plus 4 units of blood and saline and I returned. I was taken by the same ambulance crew to the same city hospital 3Kms away where, again, an OR was waiting with 2 surgeons - a recostructive (plasic) surgeon and a cardio-vascular surgeon. The operations took 3 hours and required a graft of a section of vein to repair the severed artery. Hospital stay this time was 3 days. Again my out of pocket was the $75(cdn) ambulance fee.

Currently any money you move to Canada from USA you will be losing around 30 percent of value. Your housing cost will not lower. Free healthcare is not an option due to rejstrictions for eligibility.

mostly really depends on what city you want to live in and which country you're coming from.
huge difference between someone coming from new york city to live in toronto and someone coming from jakarta, indonesia to live in halifax.

Canada's economic and immigration policies are rapidly destroying a once great nation. Alberta needs to break free to avoid going down with the ship.

I just learned that my great grandmother never naturalized in the US… which, with the recent changes eliminating the 1 generation rule…means that my siblings and I may be eligible.

I sent an email asking about work permits in Canada since I group I've been trying to get a travel contract through has the provinces listed as an option. The person who called me back from Windsor suggested I come to Canada a do a work/study program since I'm a licensed pharmacy technician in Washington State and graduated from a college program in Vancouver, Washington. That caught me off guard, so I told them I would keep the information they sent me and think about it (and I don't mean it as a "no"). I just didn't know it was an option and have to figure out the pros and cons.

Imagine being a 20 something American with a masters degree in engineering, actually contemplating moving to Canada. That doesn't happen.

It sounds great, except winter. I live in Maine, and we have 6 months of winter too and I HATE EVERY MINUTE OF IT!! But I can’t take the stress here anymore.

Many Canadians come to the US for specialized medical treatment and surgery. They don’t have the time to wait and there is a Dr. shortage in Canada. Most of our private employer based insurance covers dental, optical and a portion of our ambulance transportation. Who is paying 2,000 a month for medical insurance? Most Americans do not pay that kind of premium on employer based insurance. Mine was 100.00 a month for the lowest deductible and TOP. There may be people that are paying more but I can’t see anyone paying 2,000 a month.

I am a Canadian. Taxes, taxes, and more taxes. The cost of living is too high for many of us. Massive debt that requires taxes to pay for the interest. The healthcare is not consistent. Over 5 million Canadians do not have a family doctor. There can be long waiting lists for tests and procedures. There can also be very long emergency room waits often for hours. Crime can also be a problem in many areas.
