I’d like to add my
Little bit. ā€œDon’t pack your fearsā€. I do agree with this statement.. but whilst o don’t pack fear I pack prudence. I had an interesting experience in the Welsh mountains today on dubious ground and the first voice said to me… carry on its fine…. But the voice that has protected me since childhood spoke and it said ā€œgood callā€. Never be afraid discern the voices that talk to you. Stay safe.

I have a very bad family situation Wich has got my mental health go worse and worse in the past years. Got multiple times to the point of almost attempting suic1de.
Hiking and wild camping has been the best way to distract and calm down myself. Being alone in the woods, all by yourself, with a fire... It's so charming

I’m about a week a way from my qualifying silver DofE expedition, and this is the first time I’ve gotten really into all the research and tips, where in the past I’ve just got the stuff from the kit list without much extra thought, this one should be great if everything goes well

I’ve used the bum bag now for a year and it’s easily the best addition. Easy to fit snacks and a lightweight meal.

I'm sure by now dozens of people will have mentioned this, and you sort of did.... Sunset - Sun rise! If you think you've seen one of these from sea level or even higher - wait till you see one from the top of a fell or mountain. I've seen a dozen wild camping videos where the person has set an alarm for 4.15am.. got up - witnessed the sunirse and then gone back to sleep for a few hours..

ā€œWild campingā€. I did not know how privileged I have been. Camping at a designated camp ground - nobody does that, that not even a thing where I m from.

Great advice; her is my additional one. In lowland areas farmers fields are not good even if remote. It might appear that no cows are in the field- but often they can be in a dip or a corner. Young cows are very inquisitive and a bivi bag or tent will interest them. Also farmers are up very early on their quad bikes! Best bet in an emergency in lowland is to look for a copse marked on a map. Cows won’t go in and farmers don’t check them. You can usually get a bivi down in a copse no problem

I really enjoyed this video

@aklevin

what bivi/tent is he using?

Might sound obvious to some but my top tip is don't camp in a dip. Might seem sheltered but as soon as it rains and you're sleeping in a puddle it's not pleasant.

During the 17th to 20th centuries, Parliament passed over 5,200 enclosure acts transfering 21% of our 'common' land, 6.8 million acres into the private hands of wealthy landowners.

@AndrewMinns-b5f

here's a suggestion. just ask the land owner to camp overnight.

Totally agree about the map thing, you can't rely soly on technology for your navigation. My son is planning on going wild camping soon with some friends. They've all done DofE so have learnt some map-reading skills. One thing I've done in the past, instead of taking a whole map which can be cumbersome (especially in windy weather), is to photocopy/scan the area you're covering and print it out. So you're carry a lighter piece of paper. You can also print it magnified as well, which is good if your eyesight is getting a bit long-in-the-tooth.

I'm 54 and a wild camping/outdoors enthusiast since 18 years old when I did my Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

I'm now a full-time wheelchair user for the past 21 years.

I'm not going to attempt to do now what I would have tried to do as an able-bodied 18 year old. I'm not as fit as I was, I'm well out of being in fit condition, and my wild camping peak is 21 years behind me.

I think my advice would be to push yourself and accept a challenge, but don't overstretch your abilities. A month off work to go wild camping should be worked up to in stages. Make sure you're likely to meet each part of the possible challenges individually. Preferably we'll before you're forced to face them all head on in the first weekend.

Don't pack your fears, but don't be a numpty either. šŸ‘

Ive pitched tents near badgers nests, game trails, boar gathering grounds. I was younger and had no clue but you learn fast.

@billlybob8691

Right. Perhaps this is a really daft suggestion but unless you are in a place where you're allowed to camp wild (which is most of Europe).... ASK the owner. I'm Dutch and wild camping here is simply not allowed besides a handful of appointed locations (getting less and less) and WITH permission of the owner of just about any piece of land. You'd be surprised how many farmers and owners of small forest plots are perfectly happy to let you stay a night or perhaps 2 and most will let you get water and very often, if you bring a kid/kids, more often than not, they will inquire if you would like some fresh milk and such, or need the kids use a bathroom. Really, most rural people are quite lovely about that and just ponder that for a bit, just what a blessing that is, don't spoil it! In return RESPECT their property, their ways (don't be a nuisance, no music, watching movies with sound - you would be surprised how far sound carries over a field and mind most farmers go to bed early and rise early) respect the Sabbath day, just as a rule, you may not rest, but your hosts may. That does not only include not making noise, but also mind your dress. DO NOT leave any trash, DO NOT build fires unless the owner expressly says you can, and all that. just use common sense and don't spoil the scene, neither for yourself nor for anyone else. If trekking, just scout ahead, make a list of places and a small token of appreciation really doesn't go amiss.

Excellent video, Some old fashioned skills can still be required in the wilder parts of the country. A proper ordnance survey map is so much better than the iPhone, although the latter can be useful if needing to confirm one's situation. And isn't a proper map a thing of beauty in its own right? Much of the advice is good, and on a long pilgrimage in the UK of 750 miles I learned many of them the hard way!! I "wild" camped on building sites, golf courses, beaches, in urban areas, in nature reserves. The problem is that is one one or two people do this, that's ok, but if thousands of folk take on the wild camping hobby, that could be an issue. That's why Loch Lomond and th eTrossachs is no longer wild camping, too many people, too much damage and toilet problems.Ā

One thing is if pitching late, so as not to be seen, check the site out whilst it's still light, the hawthorn hedge may have just been clipped, some sharp stone not easily seen in the gloaming etc. With most modern tents a lightweight ground cover sheet is useful. Also for bedding, I use a roll up closed cell foam pad, attached in a plastic bag to the outside of my pack, and a lightweight self inflating mattress pad as well, the combination remains warm and comfortable and the foam pad protects the mattress. The foam pad can be useful for sitting on at other times.

You can sleep quite comfortably on a "mattress" made of loose grass under a ground tarp; then pitch another tarp two feet off the ground as your "tent". Advanced move is to do it with a single folded tarp. Make tent pegs from stuff you find, or carry some with you (I'd make/carry six). Gosh, I could go on forever ...

Hi from Colorado, USA. I’ve backpacked in Wyoming, Colorado, and Washington so I can relate. Always driving to the destination so extra stuff for the non backpacking portion can stay in the car. This summer, I’m going to Norway for the first time and we will be doing some backpacking or wild camping as I’ve learned is a European term. Do you travel, flying, using trains or buses and pack for a combo trip of backpacking and sightseeing? We will jump between Airbnbs and backpacking. We won’t have a car the entire time. Looking for packing advice or what do you do with your non-backpacking essentials. I don’t want to hike with nonessentials but will need them for the other parts of our trip. I’ll likely bring two backpacks, one large and one day pack.
