The song is one of the best ever written and the coolest melody. As a song lyricist myself, besides the mispronunciation of "Route 66" by the A.I. I noticed some confusion about the story....
Firstly, there is no place called "Route 66." It's not a location, it's a highway between Chicago and L.A... at one time the only major road between those two locations....so I don't know why the singer is pleading with his girl not to "take that last train FROM Route 66." Where's she at? Is he with her? "From" implies she's elsewhere.
The other problem is the ending. It reminds me of Orbison's "Running Scared" where you dont know if the girl will stay with him or walk away with a old boyfriend. You learn the answer at the very end. In this song, the lyrics claim "The train pulls in, but your still here......."
To me the lyrical story would make much more sense if they are standing a train platform and she's leaving on the last train to L.A. (Route 66) The train is boarding and about to take her away. (train tracks actually follow parallel to the Route 66 highway.) He begs her not to leave. Then at the end the "The train pulls away...." and the listener learns she decides to stay with him. "But you're still here...." Or But you're still here with me...."
IT doesnt make any sense if the train is pulling in and she's still with him. Of course she is... :)
