1970s Italy: Afro-Inspired Jazz, Brazilian Rhythms & Library Grooves with Nicola Conte

Video Overview & Insights

Copyright restrictions pose a challenge for our channel. YouTube automatically monetizes the songs in this mix, directing ad revenue to copyright owners. This means we can’t control the ads or their frequency. As a result, 99.9% of MAJ’s yearly viewership generates no income for us due to copyrighted music.

Nicola Conte established himself as one of the finest and most eclectic musicians,

producers, and composers in the Italian and international jazz scene. As a classically

trained guitarist, bandleader, crate-digger, and DJ, Conte's journey into music

originating from beyond Europe defines his brand of cosmic jazz. A prolific producer,

Conte's musical oeuvre echoes a spectrum of influences deriving from bossa nova, film

soundtracks of the 60’s, spiritual jazz, Latin America, and African music.

His releases have found home on Schema Records, Blue Note, Thievery

Corporation's Eighteenth Street Lounge (ESL), EmArcy/Universal Jazz, MPS,

Impulse!, and Far Out Recordings.

"This selection follows the pathway of my recent compilation Viaggio, released via Far Out Recordings last year, expanding the view on the multicultural atmosphere that surrounded Italy in the '70s. Integration was not an issue back then and many foreign musicians made Italy their new artistic home, getting together with the new wave of young Italian artists alongside the countless sessions for sound library and soundtracks.

The trend of Afro & Brazilian sounds was huge and some exciting groups were leading the scene (Mandrake & Som, De Paula -Urso - Viera, Luis Agudo, Mbamina and so on ) while independent producers started new labels to record jazz (Aldo Sinesio, Horo Records, Sergio Veschi Red Records, Black Saint, Carosello Jazz from Italy) to give space to the new sounds which span over modal and spiritual colours often fused with free and post bop.

The mix also shares a bond with the '90s, when for the first time, labels like Right Tempo, Schema, in tandem with connoisseurs, collectors and DJs like Gerardo Frisina, Luca Trevisi (just to name a few) first brought this music to new generations of listeners."
