2-Minute Neuroscience: Effects of Cocaine
Video Overview & Insights
In this video, I discuss the effects of cocaine on the brain. I describe cocaine's primary mechanism of action, which involves inhibition of the reuptake of monoamine neurotransmitters like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. I also discuss the mesocorticolimbic dopamine pathway, which connects the ventral tegmental area with the nucleus accumbens, and is activated when someone uses cocaine.
It’s like caffeine and nicotine had a kid

Great breakdown. One effect: the nucleus accumbens gets activated, due to cocaine, around people or circumstances that one would ordinarily avoid and thus very poor behavior direction by the limbic system. I.E., people are happy in circumstances that would normally activate the amygdala, the counter actor to the nucleus accumbens, that would normally direct their behavior to leave that circumstance. (Now they are ok in a bad job or poor relationship because of the cocaine use) And then, when cocaine activates the amygdala that’s when they get super paranoid and display very aberrant behavior but they don’t stop because their brain wants that nuclues accumbens activation like when the first started to use.

TRANSCRIPT:
Welcome to 2 minute neuroscience, where I simplistically explain neuroscience topics in 2 minutes or less. In this installment I will discuss the effects of cocaine on the brain.
I’ve been on drugs since I was in high school, since I was 15 basically. I started of with weed as a teen, that five years of my life is still a blur. Then when I came out of matric I was severely depressed and anxious and I realized that I had lost five years of my life, and barely had a personality bc throughout high school I was a stoner class clown who entertained everybody while I was being abused at home. I tried shrooms. They didn’t take me where I wanted to go. The rest is history.
Cocaine is a strong stimulant that can cause a range of effects including increased energy, alertness and euphoria, along with an elevated heart rate and other sympathetic nervous system responses. Cocaine also has a high potential for abuse and inclines users towards compulsive administration of the drug.
Although all of the details of how cocaine produces its effects are not known, it is thought that the main mechanism by which cocaine acts on the brain is through the inhibition of the reuptake of neurotransmitters called monoamines. Monoamines are a group of neurotransmitters that includes dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Reuptake is a method of removing neurotransmitters from the synaptic cleft between neurons. When reuptake is inhibited, it causes increased levels of neurotransmitters in the synaptic cleft.
So the difference between coke and an SSRI are very similar?
Cocaine inhibits reuptake by blocking the action of the proteins known as transporters that are normally responsible for it. By blocking monoamine transporters and inhibiting monoamine reuptake, cocaine causes levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin to increase in the brain, enhancing the activity of these neurotransmitters at their receptors.
Although cocaine increases levels of dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin, it is not very clear what the individual contribution of each of these neurotransmitters is to the effects of the drug. However, it is generally thought that cocaine’s action at dopamine receptors is most important for making cocaine rewarding and promoting the compulsive use of the drug. The mesocortical and mesolimbic dopamine pathways, which are sometimes called the mesocorticolimbic dopamine pathway, are pathways that are rich in dopamine neurons; they project from a dopamine rich region in the brainstem called the ventral tegmental area to a variety of locations in the limbic system and frontal cortex. These areas include a region called the nucleus accumbens, which is considered important to addiction and is activated whenever we do something rewarding. Thus, when someone uses cocaine, dopamine activity along the mesocorticolimbic pathway is increased, causing dopamine levels to rise in regions like the nucleus accumbens.

@chrishaizimsqueI am suffering my downer right now 😂
@KldpydvSo does this mean that cocaine is just as good as Zoloft😂
@superpoacher67110:18 gotta be the fattest lines I’ve seen
@maxconing812Why doesn’t coke work for me?
I did a gram tonight but it just made me “relaxed”
Instead of the stereotypical effects like euphoria, energy or happiness?
Am I immune to cocaine? 😭
I’ve never done it and don’t plan to. I’m just curious but bro these comments😂
@EnzoForte-i7jToo old for this shit.
@TheacejcclanFor every minute of euphoria, the brain pays with hours of exhaustion. Cocaine doesn't provide energy; it borrows it from the entire body. The repayment of anxiety and depression is inevitable.
@MicrodoseInsightsi love it!
@rc-nitrokidWhen I take bumps I just feel normal and focused.-. It’s weird
@edgarrojas4706I hope those addicted may find a way to quit and regain control of their lives
@mrmike7965It is probably the dumbest drug of all time. I’m already an outgoing guy and all it’s ever done for me is guarantee I’ll feel like shit later.
@annchovie8748Don't forget that cocaine interfereswith packing dopamine into vessiclss.
@Christopher-b1pAnd then you got to try the banana and potato strains.
@Avag-r6cGreat let's get some.
@BiGAussieVicZelensky loves this vid.
@mklizzarCoke isn’t as bad as thought it just like redbull with a cool high feels like adderall
@ntlwill25886am
@sbak247Wait. Youre saying cocaine is a High dose. Instant acting SSRI!?
@Kaizen747Dopamine and serotonin increases. You feel happier. Same effect as antidepressants. Very hatd to come off antidepressants as well.
@NoemiStern-v9zI call cocaine “the devil’s drug” because it can turn any normal person insane leading to nothing but people getting hurt in the process.
@jgwmainPeople in the comments;
50% people who watch the video to learn about cocaine because they study medicine etc.
50% people who just did a line and came here due to curiosity
People are stupid if they smoke crack cocaine
@brownking6000Please, please. Never try this. It will TRY to ruin your life. God is good ❤.
@Amelia-v2pGreat video! I refer to the VTA as the "Negotiator".
@Monica_MNow how about anticholinergic
@MohaZeineXเสาใหม้แต่ผมยังทำหน้าที่เป็นหลังคา
@maskmaxmatterBut what does cocaine do at the level of the sodium and potassium channel?
@Christopher-b1pI’m just tryna figure out why it’s called a 8 ball of coke
@JJ_Denisyour body could be so much stronger without it
@dudeguy1030I don't get high from cocaine which is a blessing
