20 Cultural Differences Between Europe & America

Video Overview & Insights

After spending more than 2.5 years living in Europe and traveling to all 49 countries on the continent (most of them 3+ times) -- I am excited to share with you the "20 Biggest Cultural Differences" that I find between the two places!

Out of all the things mentioned in this video, which cultural difference do you think is the most noticeable between the USA and Europe? For me, I’d say it’s the public transportation, work-life balance and language diversity! Do you agree or disagree with my opinions in this video? Would love to hear from you guys in the comments down below!

— @drewbinsky

Please note that when I refer to "Europe" in this video, I am generalizing quite a bit. I do realize that many countries in Europe (i.e. Moldova, Kosovo, Armenia, etc) are different from the rest of the continent. And also - keep in mind that all opinions in this video are MINE and based on my own personal travel experiences as an American traveler in Europe.

I'm curious to get your thoughts on this! Did I miss anything on this list that you would add? Do you disagree with any of my points? Please let me know in the comments down below -- I will be checking and responding to your messages :)

You try to leave a gas station without paying, you'll definitely get to know the local police.
It is a crime, and they have your vehicle registration. Police will quickly find out it's a rental car, and the rental car company will give them all your information.
I once couldn't pay, because their card terminal didn't work, and I didn't have cash, so I left my ID with them, drove to the next ATM, got cash, and drove back to pay.

I feel like UK is so much different than what you described. Typical work week is 40hrs, the healthcare is free but the wait times are absolutely crazy, on average we get 3-4weeks of holiday a year, waiters usually ask you if everything is okay or if you need anything and public transport only exist in cities and towns but to go from one city to the other can be a real challenge with train ticket prices being way too expensive

Some corrections :) I am not sure, where you rented car.... but most rentals are automatical and most cars use gasolin (and are nowdays hybrid). south-europe takes time off during noon as it is too hot to work, also these countries work long in the evening. Europe does not have "free" healthcare. Everyone pais and it differs from country to country (taxes, health insurance companies etc.). If you dont have insurance, you need to pay yourself. to pay for using toilet is good, usually toilets are really clean. EU countries do not allow to smoke inside. Usually only outside eating areas etc. Ofcourse in Germany is "knipers", where you can smoke (but they dont serv food). Europe breakfast differs from countries. I usually preffer normal breakfast, not pastry (normal = eg English breakfast, porridge). Pastry can be considerd quick and lazy choise. Regarding traffick signs, to get driving licenses in Europe ... you go to driving school, where you have theory lessons and driving lessons. I had to take 40 theory and 40 driving lessons (plus winter and dark time driving lessons). I learnd once the signs and no issues in Europe with signs. Most are the same, some small differences (usually with parking).

You mean the difference between Europe and the USA, because America is just the USA; there's also South America and Central America.

I used to believe that America was better than Europe because I was influenced by American TV shows and films. However, after living in Europe for 39 years, my perspective has changed. Since 2014, I’ve been considering moving to the U.S., especially before Trump became president, but I am truly grateful to live in Europe.

The main reason is the unique atmosphere and vibe here in Europe, which I find incomparable to that in the U.S. Just watching events like the UEFA Champions League, the European Championship (Euros), the French Open, other European tennis tournaments, the Tour de France, and Eurovision—these events bring Europeans together in a way that’s hard to find elsewhere. They foster a sense of community and excitement that is absent in the U.S., where such large-scale, multicultural events that unite people from 49 different countries are rare.

Additionally, I find that I get along better with Europeans than with Americans. For example, in New York City, I often feel misunderstood and even disliked by some locals. When I comment on YouTube videos about New York, I rarely receive positive responses. In contrast, here in Europe, when I’ve commented on Eurovision or other European events, I usually get supportive thumbs up, and Europeans tend to understand me better. Countries like Italy and Albania, for example, generally accept me without hostility.

Overall, I believe Europe is better than America because it includes countries like France, which I consider the best country in the world. Paris, in particular, feels like the center of the universe—the place to be.

If I were to move to the U.S., say to the Midwest, I think I’d experience homesickness and miss the special European atmosphere that I cherish here in Europe.

All United States does is eat hot dogs and play baseball. They didn’t want a abarth. But they needed one in places away from big metro areas it’s just like Europe. You may be more comfortable sleeping near Detroit than south near the Atlantic ocean like Pennsylvania it’s like a giant hill cliff where anyone can walk in and a whole bunch of wind and ocean air.

We, in California, recycle and have lots of healthful food (and amazing produce!). Even when I was a kid in the 1990s, we separated the recyclables and had different bins for each. But we get made fun of by the rest of the country for it. It's always a shock when I go to the other parts of the country.

Terrific video. 2 small adds--Americans will eat & drink walking on the street, while you'll never see that in Europe. They sit down. Parks are an important part of European lives. For European city dwellers, parks are their front rooms. In the US, city parks are for kids.

Hi Drew. Europe is very big, and you're mixing up northern, eastern, central, and southern Europeans, which I don't think is accurate. Even within Spain, there are many differences between us, depending on the region you're from. Thank you so much for your videos; they're very interesting.
