Hello, dear readers and subscribers. Today, we discuss 5 interesting statements/findings from the excellent book "Art/Work" by Heather Darcy Bhandari and Jonathan Melber. As mentioned in the video, this is not a paid advertisement, but a book that currently sits at the top of my personal list of best books for artists—as a result, I strongly recommend reading it.

They did the study on successful Artists. Successful Artists are the ones who get early exhibitions at quality galleries.
This means if you don't you need a day job and living a simple life. Also find a cheap place to live. And accept you are doing art because you love it and it's who you are.

Number 1 is exhibit A for having a commercial aspect to your work. So many artists think that's a dirty secret but the alternative is working a day job because you don't make enough as an artist! After going thru an MFA, the museum level contemporary art world is hit or miss in my opinion, based on whatever society is talking about. So if you don't align with that conversation it's going to be near impossible. It's a great time to aim for museums if you want to talk about gender, race or identity, especially if you are a minority, otherwise it's going to be really tough from what I've seen.

This was such a great video! about being an artist Very informative, straight to point and somehow very uplifting. I especially love the part about rejection and failure. Rejection is something that happens and we all need to deal with it. Failure is something we decide on our own, because we are the ones who create our definition of a success.

I made no apologies or had any shame at working a full time office/admin job and being an artist (I'm 67 retired now). I took my watercolours and hung them up in my cubicle and if someone was interested in my oil paintings (I had large paintings) I hung the paintings in their office. I made some sales but what was really interesting was the psychological effect real art, as opposed to posters/prints/reproductions has on people. They got used to looking at my art and when I removed/moved the piece for some reason, they asked me where the painting was and why was it removed. A few bought when I told them I had taken the piece back. When I sell anything now I tell people to hang the piece of art at eye level, where they can see it everyday, all day. Not to sit with it behind your back.

After 60 years I believe that artists create art because we have to create art. If recognition comes, it is a mixed blessing. Focus on the art and enter judged shows without too much concern for outcome. When an artist pursues money, the art stagnates or becomes forced. Success comes from the joy of creating, not deposits in the bank.

Part of why I like creating art and would love to do it full time is because there’s very little human interaction involved in the actual process. I hate all the networking, customer service and social media stuff that’s supposedly involved.
I think that’s one of the main problems with the industry world and the creative world is that they are trying to force people with totally different temperaments to be industrious sales people when continuous production and social things are draining and uncomfortable for most creative artists

@gogol293So we listen to you, you say one thing, then another person says another opinion, a third person gives yet more contradictory advice. All leads to no one doing anything and having no understanding of what is relevant to them. The only way forward is to stop listening to the dirge of internet opinion and try which ever thoughts make sense to you.
@Resident_888Advice from someone with a professional painting practice of 20 years:
You mentioned that you have a studio practice of at least 8 hours a week—this is definitely not enough. You should be painting and working on your artistic practice for at least 6–8 hours a day. Long, hard hours of practical work are the only trait that can get you anywhere, and even that does not guarantee success.
If your goal is to make money, you should choose a different profession, because an artist’s life and lifestyle have never been a stable choice for most people. Only a select few reach the top and are able to live solely from selling their work. The remaining 95% will have a very difficult life if making art is not their true passion and mission in life.
Good luck — ars longa, vita brevis.

@AmjustdriverNo logro entender todo, no encontré subtítulos o doblaje, me interesa mucho este canal. :(
@cesaroc6231I was so glad to hear that there is an age limit on being a contemporary artist. Being 76 years old I finally discovered that these blue chip galleries are Ageist snobs. Now I don't have to sell my house just to buy into the contemporary art world. And I won't have to make ugly art just to eliminate any intrinsic value. If it is true that only one rich man keeps the prices of Andy Warhol paintings high I think the whole contemporary art world must be at risk of disintegration.
@NhojYesdnilArtistThank you for posting your video 🎉
@kirsty145I agree 1000% with the day job idea. Having a day job really helped me excel in my art career because I didn’t have to rely solely on art sales.
@superwaxxIt used to be that taking up space and taking risks got one noticed in the art world (Basquiat for instance) It seems now that it is about being polite and not being bothersome along with a hell of a lot of work and probably more luck than we want to admit. While I trust that you know what you’re talking about… I wonder too what other impolite ways can be utilized? Especially now in these times where we should most definitely revive our old ways and I’m talking about questioning the system. At any rate I see a man such as Julian the best candidate to throw the tried and true methods to the dust and be brave. It is a man who knows the rules that are meant to break them and gain success.

@tumblingrosesstudioThis is a great video!
Too many people have the idea of 'going all in' as if their obstacle to becoming a full-time artist was not enough artwork.
ART/WORK is a GREAT book!!!
@jennifertate4397Blah, blah, blah .....Artists (real ones) don't need this advice. There's nothing more irritating than books and people giving instructions.
@marekgaramond4198Never noticed the dog until I read the comments. LOL. Also, I really enjoy the sage wisdom bestowed upon me. I took notes.
