I smiled when I watched this because I used to be the kind of person who bought things just because they were on sale. After a while I realized I wasn't actually saving money if I ended up with things I never used. These days I try to make a list before shopping and I usually wait until the next day before placing an order. Sometimes I even forget about the item completely, which tells me I probably didn't need it in the first place. I remember writing down a few websites while reading about shopping ideas, and Valuecom happened to be one of the names in my notes, but the habit that has helped me the most is simply slowing down before buying anything. It's surprising how much money those small changes can save over time without making life feel restrictive.

Yeah I’m a minimalist. My husband is not. He doesn’t want to get rid of a whole bunch of stuff in the basement because his parents gave him it and he thinks he might use it

That feeling when you already do pretty much all of these 😭 lmao

You shared a great tip to rent the rest of your home out, rather than to just live in a house for yourself, or even worse rent an apartment. You're literally throwing money away by renting for yourself. Though I personally disagree with the tip on paying double your monthly mortgage. As well as putting a big down payment. You need debt to make money, just not credit card debt or expensive car debt. Yes you will put more into your principal rather than interest, but you could've used that extra money to invest in purchasing another house and renting that one out. And if you're even more riskier, though really it's not that risky if you know how the market moves, you could get a home equity loan on a house that has gone up in value, and use that money to buy another house and rent that one out. Buy tools as you go, but really the most basic is an impact and drill combo, hammer, sledgehammer, laminate/VLP installer tools, air compressor, ladder, finishing nail gun, PH2 and flat head screw driver, PPE. You'll almost always need to remodel the bathroom, if you want to save money on a house. A good 20-30k is knocked off the price if the bathroom is outdated. The problem is not updating the bathroom for your own sake, it's because damaged subflooring from leaks is always an issue with old bathrooms. This all takes time, but of you have a helper, you can finish the house in a month if you have a full time job.

I've tried those apps like gas buddy, but their prices are not updated and they never seem to show the cheapest gas prices, I've learned to always look at gas prices in every commute, see how different companies prices fluctuate and look into signing up for club rewards, it's free for many gas stations. Also look up their gasoline quality, this will help reduce maintenance costs and your car will last longer. Walmart's murphy is the cheapest in my town but it's fuel quality is bad. Parker's kitchen is a better quality fuel and it's competetive to other gas stations, but its membership is so good. It's free, and on the app you can see which gas station is the cheapest. You can fill your car up all from the app, without using the scanners, which also means you are more protected from credit card skimmers.

People don't realize just how much money they spend on fuel. 20 cents may not seem like much but that's an extra $5 on a full tank in an SUV, and if your commute is long, this really impacts your finances. It's like paying an extra spotify premium subscription every month!

Also HUUUGE money savings comes from driving habits -hypermiling. I spend an extra 20 min on the road total every day since I drive slower, that's 10min outbound and 10min inbound. Instead of arriving in 45min, I arrive in 55min. I used to drive 75-80mph on the highway and I'd accelerate normally in the city. But now I limit my speed to 55mph, I use downhills to speed up as fast as is efficient which my car tops mpgs in a downhill at 65mph, and I gradually slow back down to 55 when I reach a flat section, which means that the whole time I'm slowing down, I'm getting a higher mpg figure than my car's most efficient speed. Also as you drive every day, memorize each traffic light pattern and try to adjust your speed to never stop for a red light. Here's a typical scenario: everyone will keep 45 when there's a red light ahead, and they'll begin to brake when they get close to the car in front, but you go 37 the whole way from the moment you saw the light turn red, then as you approach the intersection, the light turns green, you pass every single car waiting at the light and you keep driving ahead until they all catch up to you and they speed off at 50mph. Do this but look at the cars from the other part of the intersection to make sure no one is running a red light.

I drive a paid off "gas guzzler", a 2003 tahoe. Most people get 11-15mpg combined in this car, my car has a highway epa rating of 16mpg highway but I get 29-31mpg combined! I verified it by calculating at the pump. The onboard reading is pretty accurate. Though I will say for the long run, buying a low mileage and fuel efficient reliable car is better, don't just look at reliable brands, look at the components they chose for their car. Toyota is known for reliability but all of their sedans have CVTs which are not great for long term. Hyundais are known to be unreliable, but after doing some research, their engine build quality has improved significantly and they use traditional automatic transmissions and simple engines compared to every other brand right now, this is great for DIY repairs in the future. The issue that they have is electronics, so watch out for that on the vehicle you're purchasing. But lately it seems like every car manufacturer is having issues with their electronics, all of this digital integration has too many bugs.

Back to the topic at hand, by hypermiling I started saving about $340 a month on fuel, that's $4,000 every year. That's a whole dang used car payment.

Vinegar by itself doesn't disinfect. There are essential oils you can use that do this like Tea Tree, Thyme, Lemon, Eucalyptus, Clove, Peppermint, Lemongrass and Lavender. Combine all those and you'll have a strong natural disinfectant

I remember when I used to save so much money by couponing. It has basically become non-existant now with grocery stores. Or if there is a coupon it's terrible and I'd never use it. So mad at grocery stores these days. They really are out here price gouging us for the literal thing that keeps us all alive: food!! 😢

I love how everyone is getting “don’t skip the doctor” out of this, instead of “take control of your health.” He hasn’t been to the Dr. Never said any of us shouldn’t go. Take care of yourself to avoid bigger health problems.

I can happily write that I am doing most of these things.

Thankfully to my mum, who would always be careful with money and used to tell me, we don't have money. But the difference between me and her is, that she is a smoker and alcoholic and I am not. So thanks mum for showing me, how to be careful with money 😊 thanks Gabe for a video.

I refuse to use vinegar to clean. I HATE the smell it leaves on everything. It makes me sick. Sorry, but I think I'll splurge and spend a dollar for a bottle of generic cleaner once a year.

Your mentioning that a no spend month is s good way to break habits was a way I hadn't thought of it. Mainly because I tackled those years ago.

I can see it being a route to lower costs, if the habit is changef, not if you go right back to it when the month is over.

Not sure if it was in here but changing your own oil is absolutely worth it. I just called and a place and they wanted $80+tax for a 5 qt synthetic oil change. Instead of mystery (recycled?) oil and filters, you can get known good quality for like $30 total. It takes me 30 mins max to do, and saves driving and waiting time. So I'm essentially saving $120/hr.

If you live in hot weather Dicks sports has very good Dicks brand tees and shorts. Around $15 but sometimes deals. I splurged and got a name brand one for 30$ similar. Its sucks. The less expensive in store brand ones are amazing.

If you pay mortgage twice a month be sure the bank applies the payment immediately. Wells Fargo will not post a partial payment, therefore no savings! In that case add a little extra to your payment for similar impact.
