Coach, you did a great job for beginners. I can't believe you did that in 10 minutes. It took me years to learn how to paint with oils. Yep, I'm self taught. Here are a couple of my suggestions. 1. try not to squeeze out more paint than you think you will use. If you do you might be like me and stand in front of the easel wondering where you could put some more paint. Don't do that, it's a NO, NO. And one more: 2. buy a box of rubber medical gloves and wear them. If you are as messy as me it will save you a love of grief. Coach, I don't want to spoil your parade. Like I say I think you did a magnificent job in ten minutes. Hooray for you Coach. Now back to my painting. AL

I actually prefer Winsor and Newton, their products proved best for the most of the work.
Unfortunately, I can't get all of the things I need from them, and some non European made things proved really bad made, like sketchbooks and watercolours, but it is probably due to series or some local production standards, because overall quality is actually so good I am feeling like an idiot for even writing this. I felt like an idiot for going into store with clear comparisons and limited lists in mind, because the purchase was that complex.
What is American counterpart of these? I want to know in case I stumble upon some in store and WN isn't available at the moment.

@7:40 what painting is that, and who painted it?
The one book that every painter needs is "Making Color Sing" by Jeanne Dobie. Even though it's written by a watercolorist, for watercolor painting, the lessons apply to oils and acrylics too.
The main thing to learn is color bias. Every color has a secondary color in it, that's it's color bias, or secondary color within it.
For example, to make "purple";
Ultramarine blue is blue with a red bias. Alizarin red is red with a blue bias. If you mix those two together you get a proper purple because you're mixing blue (red) plus red (blue), so only mixing two colors, blue and red.
Cobalt blue has a yellow bias, and Cadmium red has a yellow bias, so you're actually mixing three colors blue, red, yellow, so you end up with a greyed out purple.
Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

I agree with you about the colors and am so glad to hear you say them. People want to get all these different colors and use them straight out of the tube without mixing them. The 3 colors red, blue and yellow is of course is from where all colors come! We always need white as well , I like your intro!
@edithhenson6917Fat chance

@galang_aliengreat help!! I haven’t painted since college…. t 9:33 his was a perfect refresher!! never knew there was a nontoxic paint thinner!! Ty!!!
@SuzzyLynneyAs someone who’s painted for decades I’ll give you this advice.
- if you have well water or a septic system DONT OIL PAINT. It’ll ruin your septic system and containment your well. Oil paint builds up like a sludge in your tank and it will fail over time. Trust me, I learned this lesson.
Fact, and I know from experience.
You’re welcome.
Oh and Francis bacon painted on unprimed canvas, and so did Gauguin.
This is one of the videos that was crisp and clear for beginners, nothing sort of jargons which confuses and scare away beginners ✨
@fathimarehana901Great video. I subbed. I work 40-50 days straight and live in northern Canada so for me to take lessons somewhere is next to impossible.
@alextaylor3815😂😂 i dont even paint and i watched the whole video
@TaherAdamjeeCan anyone offer any advice on how much ventilation I need for a small-sized studio apartment? I'm just concerned about fumes and I don't want to open any of the supplies until I get a better idea
@ricardoroxas7690thanks coach
@hopelessorenjiiiThis is GREAT. I’ve been painting with other mediums for a Long time and have lately wanted to try oil painting, but knowing that it really IS quite a bit different I have been putting it off. Wanting to get down to DOing something, but feeling like I really wanted to know at Least some important points I started watching videos. Because of what I DO know about painting in general ( I’m an ol’ 70 yr old grandma) I have some basic knowledge about painting in general, but This video is one of the BEST for the important tips on the differences, thanks for sharing, I AM subscribing.)
@teaskl5trying to motivate myself to get up and paint instead of laying on the couch watching sopranos. lo n behold now i have tony on two screens instead of one
@Kelly-uu3ziI went to hobby lobby and grabbed 8 14”x11” canvas’ for like $12. Got an oil paint starter kit with like 14 different colors in tubes the size of travel tooth paste for $8. A large tube of titanium white $8. Starter pack of brushes for $7 then another pack of 1”, 2” and 3” brushes for another $7. Set of METAL palette knives for $8. Liquid white $10. Turpintide $10. And a wooden artists palette for $8. As I started painting and had trouble duplicating various techniques, I replaced most of the cheaper brushes 1 or 2 at a time. Having a nice fan brush, round mop brushes were pretty game changing for my bushes and some tree techniques. And as I got down to half a tube of a color of paint left I would replace it with a larger tube. Just starting out following along with my boi Bob Ross, I was able to make some real nice pieces with relatively low cost of entry. Everything I listed here was $78. I do like the idea of a canvas pad and the plastic palette sheets he mentioned.
@nicsu2128This video is EVERYTHING!!! I've been searching everywhere for a video that is this helpful for beginner oil painters like myself. Appreciate your expertise, and I am much more excited for my next oil painting session.
@SavannahRaceThis was so helpful! Thank you.
@gemmaohagan1066This video had an amazing amount of information for a ten minute video. I did oil painting in college before switching to acrylic because it was an easier cleanup, cheaper, less smelly, and more portable. I want to get back into oil painting because my art style has evolved in a way that I really need the workability of oil paints. This video was a great little refresher.
@joellecastonguay8082"if you dont want to wait for oil paints to dry, stick with acrylics and watercolour" i wish i could Man, i really wish i could
@Lok1_358Thank you! , for making me feel more comfortable about trying oil ,after being an acrylic artist you gave great advice and direction. I love the look of oil paintings, the richness… I’ve subscribed and look forward to learning more from you 🥳👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼🙌🏼
