I have a question: let's say you actually have the money to produce a good movie, isn't there another path to bring it to life apart from meeting collaborators through fum festivals?

I don't know if my question is lame, but this whole thing feels like a closed circle cult.

Thank you for recognizing for all of the facts involved make myself as a demographic as a person and not a human being, incredibly "less than human" in the lens of the most popular. I am not white or black or LGBTQ or any of the above. This message is not an insult, it is my honest "thank you" to remind me where even independent thinking people/artists place my kind of people. BTW this is not a form of hate speech by any means, I relate best to my friends growing up that ARE Mexican, biologically and some of Nationality living here in the US. I am not of their lineage...and I relate with them more than most. Many people in this country care to relate until there is a black and white tale to be heard, letting the rest of us to be discriminated against...until someone speaks out telling us that we are the criminals for just trying to live.

FILM FESTIVALS FOR BEGINNERS

This was great 🎉

— @Marleyuribe

You’ve got a film you worked hard on and are proud of. Now it’s time to submit to festivals. But entering the film festival ring for the first time can be overwhelming. It can seem like everyone knows the secret tips and tricks to getting in and getting noticed. In this video, we demystify the film festival process, and give you strategies to navigate the circus.

IMPORTANCE OF FILM FESTIVALS

That Whiplash synopsis is pretty bad.

— @NostalgiNorden

Looking at the steep submission fees for fests, you may wonder if you need a festival run at all. So before you submit, it’s important to know what festivals can actually do for you. The most valuable commodity for the majority of fests is networking. Most reputable organizations will draw a crowd of industry members, and all organizations will draw a crowd of filmmakers. These meet and greets are indispensable.

If you’re lucky enough to get a feature into a top tier festival like Sundance or Cannes, you may also have a chance at distribution. This is much harder to achieve, however, if you aren’t at one of the Big Five.

Realist's Guide to Film Fest Acceptance:
1. Be rich
2. Know rich people
3. Know people involved with the festival circuit
4. Leverage your social media following to show your built in audience to festivals
5. Sponsor the festival beyond what you will be supporting via exorbitant film submission fees
6. Volunteer for free for the festivals for years building up social equity
7. Make a good movie

— @Zegeebwah

TIPS FOR SUBMITTING TO FILM FESTIVALS

If you think the festival route is the path for you, it’s time to decide on which festivals to submit to. This requires a lot of research– you don’t want to waste money by applying to fests indiscriminately. When making your choices, there are a few factors to take into account. First, look at the past winners. Are they similar to your film? Where are they now? If it seems like the festival takes movies like yours and can elevate your career, then that’s a good festival to apply to.

— @sumfactormultivetseofficial

GETTING INTO FILM FESTIVALS

Now comes the hard part. There’s no one way to ensure your movie will get into all your top picks, but there are certain things you can do to give yourself a better chance. Most obviously, your film should be good. For most fests, this means unique– is it saying something different in a different way? It also means professional quality, sound mixed, colored, etc.

Very nice documentary

— @MaeyaTVusa

Film festivals may feel daunting, but if you submit to the right place, they can work wonders for both your film and your career.

One of my best friends did work experience for a film festival and even got the chance to attend the premieres at Pinewood Studios.

He said it was his and a handful of other people's jobs to select which film admissions will be accepted. He said he was even told by the people higher up that only spend 2 minutes watching the starting of the film. If they're not engaged, then don't allow the submission. Howevee if they are engaged, then skip to the middle and end of the film and watch a couple mins from their and see if it's also engaging.

I don't know if all festivals do this but it males sense with the amount of submissions they get. Thought this would be useful advice to other filmmakers out there

Great video, but something very important is missing. One of the biggest ways people get into the big five is by having a prior relationship with them. For example, many of the feature films that get into Sundance were done by people who went through their writer’s/director’s labs.

Imagie a business model where you get paid just to decide if you’re going to accept the products that you will sell. Cinema festivals must be the most profitable business. Is amazing the amount of festivals that have only one or two years run and they charge you the same as Sundance.

Damn interesting remark that a shorter short film is more likely to be selected )

I also agree that an exciting beginning of the film increases the chances of selection.

Don’t worry about getting into the big 5. I send most of my films overseas America is to toxic to much discrimination against straight brown men, more welcoming in Europe.
