The U.S. tax code is 4 million words long. Shakespeare’s entire canon is just 900,000.

Thankfully most Americans use the ‘1040’ form, which is one of the simplest tax forms, at just 200 pages long!

As a taxpayer for more than 30 years, I am quite interested in this topic since i'm involved directly in it. It is truly intriguing as I've lived long enough to face this problem.

— @yeehawitshecrazyfrogys

Taxes are so confusing that when ‘Money Magazine’ asked 50 tax professionals to completing the same tax return for the same single family, they came up with 50 different answers! [1]

Seriously, is there anything worse than taxes?

The only just tax is a land tax. Everything else is highway robbery. You pay to own the countries land, or pay to live on it second hand via rent which fund your landlords taxes.

— @Erowens98

Well, yes. More taxes!

Maybe we could be like ye olde English folk who were taxed on windows, or like the Russians who were taxed on beards. Maybe we could be like the Ancient Egyptians and get paid in beer – and taxed in beer! [2]

we will nvr advance if we just do an "improved" version of the past... until we automate 90% of the rhetoric that we claim is a government, the cycle(s) of "same 💩 diff. day" will continue

**if majority of govt responsibilities are automated, the cost to run a govt drops CONSIDERABLY, and we finally own our country again 🤷‍♂️ or st least have a balanced balance sheet...

— @YinzerPC

It depends on where you stand.

Are you convinced taxes are theft on successful people? You’d argue burdensome and convoluted tax laws fund wars and line the pockets of corrupt politicians.

It's interesting cause a 19th century cientist could've probably done this

— @vitorschroederdosanjos6539

But maybe you’re a realist because countries can’t be funded on bake sales. How else will we fund train lines, paved roads, and hospitals?

Normalizing taxation also normalised tax rebates. That’s good news for a slave owner, but still bad news for a slave…

13:27 "It was the first meaningful time in history that people's contribution to the funding of the state was proportional to the money in their accout"

It's the literal opposite. Up until income tax, you were taxed on wealth. Like the fireplace tax, window tax, are indirect taxes on wealth. Income tax doesn't care at all what money I have in my account. If I made $0 that year I owe $0 in income tax even if I'm a centibillionaire.

— @smiiithyyy

Conducting censuses was tricky business though.

To ease the pain, taxes were based on entire communities rather than on individual homes. Provincial governments and local magistrates oversaw taxation, but the physical collection was auctioned off.

I have no idea where the "hygiene" reason for the Beard tax comes from.
It was a part of an all-encompassing "modernisation"/"westernisation" push, where everything associated with tradition (except the absolute power and sanctity of the tsar of course lol) had to go. And since "modernity" at the time was doing everything like the French it meant forcible introduction of French fashion, architecture, city planning, music etc.

— @Sk0lzky

The Publicani were tax farmers, who would outbid each other for the pleasure of being the most hated person on the planet: the taxman.

If their bid won, then they paid the state the advance of the collection. These were effectively loans where Rome was expected to pay back any interest to the Publicani.

I like the typical for the anglophone world "the people" when it comes to magna carta.
"The people" was the peak of the elite. Larry Fink needs to rubberstamp your pizza man's tax. And his own.

— @Sk0lzky

Tax collectors got to keep the interest plus anything in excess of their bid. However, they had to do the hard work of converting everything into coinage, and be prepared to make a loss if they weren’t able to recoup their bid. [6]

To lower that risk, some Roman tax collectors colluded with local politicians to buy up large quantities of grain at low rates, which they’d hold in reserve until they could mark up the value during a food shortage.

land value taxes. LAND VALUE TAXES!

— @Alpha222-tkn

But give it a few hundred years and citizens would push back against the tax man, which is why the policies for paying your dues got a whole lot stranger.

It’s time to count the ways tax has changed the world to understand why “The History of Tax is Weird”.

18:25 bad actors ARE the government

Income tax is here to stay because of the lack of conversion to gold. Because the US currency is backed by nothing, it only has value because we have to pay taxes with it, so we all chase dollars.
It is like midevil tally sticks. The sticks had value because they needed them to pay the tax.

I feel like it's intellectually dishonest to present the current labor system as being the result of an honest tug-of-war between the owning class and the working class ending in "the best of both worlds." That's rather convenient. This neglects to acknowledge that child labor hasn't ended. Rather, the burden of child labor (and other forms of labor injustice) has been shifted from rich countries to poor countries.

Yeah.... Taxation is weird. Usually you get arrested for theft, but I guess the government gets to do whatever it wants.

When Anglo-Saxons seem to speak about something global (taxes) in world history when in fact they’re only talking about their little small world (Anglo-Saxon world). Like please do something about the way you read history and stop seeing your history as the global history. Interesting video nonetheless 👍

taxes are a problem in america and sub developed countries.

Most of europe, asia and oceania have it fairly simple and straightforward such as VAT tax for all sales included in the price of goods and services, theres NO state tax and federal tax plus exempts after the price tag.

Or how income tax is fairly simple and in brackets easily understandable with very few and clear tax reductions for very specific cases.

These tax bureaucracy issues are just a problem in north American and poorly developed countries with mismanaged governments.

@CharlieZenenour
@

power to tax is the power to steal and that's why the politicians ratified the-ok-tax-your-income amendment and invented the Federal Reserve too...

@JoseFernandez-qt8hm
@

A point worth mentioning is that, unlike today, medieval nobles who got tax exceptions did so in exchange for military service. In fact it was sorta the other way around, tax (for example the scutage tax in England) was a way to avoid military service. It wasn't until the French revolution that it became acceptable to both provide military service AND pay taxes.

@crazeelazee7524

Train lines, paved roads, and hospitals are actually the easiest items to find private funding for.

@calebdoner

We need to scrap the fiat economy and tie our economy back to the gold standard, get rid of all social welfare programs(including social security) at the federal level, and reduce the amount of current executive agencies by at least half. Repealing the 16th Amendment and shutting police departments and integrating a majority of those personnel into the sheriffs department and recreating the local militia for excessive use of force is also a great idea. Militias fund themselves for training and equipment acquisition and only charge for their services, so replacing police, national guard, and a majority of the standing army with the local militia again would cut down on costs in all of those areas.

It is in theft on people who only did the thing the system incentivices; exploitation in all her forms

@thevillager8339
@

If you look at it this way. The economic activity of the general public ultimately pays all direct and indirect taxes. This is because businesses act as tax agents for the government. Even if the company is an offshore tax haven based entity, it can still spend money with other businesses that do pay tax and still employ people who have to pay income tax, which is often collected at source. Think PAYE in the UK.

Taxes are something you honestly can’t live without (and i dare You to give me an example where it’s ever worked without.) and something you can’t live with. It’s like living with a sibling that you don’t like, but what the hell what are you gonna do, kick them out.

@markushaahr9194
@

Just gonna throw this out there... Income tax was supposed to be temporary, like a lot of other taxes that ACTUALLY started the civil war.

If you want to believe we fought over slaves, before the war, no taxes, after the war, a bunch of taxes.

So if you want to believe the lie, you can't be against taxes, or your racist, for wtf do you think the taxes made up for????

But then again, your probably not racist. Cause it was about money, not slaves. If it was about slaves, the north wouldn't have continued to allow slavery. Don't believe me? Read the 13th amendment. "Slavery is illegal....EXCEPT"

So I vote. Everyone stop paying taxes. That's our vote this election. That we are done with the stupidity, that we are done being stupid

@ianhale4466
@

The amenities payed by taxes are mostly non-exclusive because of the commercial housing market. If someone would want a tax system with opt-out tiers, they would have to create different residental zones for the different services. That already sounds overcomplicated, but it would be possible.
