Ace were a British rock band, who enjoyed moderate success in the 1970s. Their membership included Paul Carrack, who later became famous as the co-lead vocalist of Mike + The Mechanics and as a solo artist. Ace are best known for their hit single "How Long", which was a top 20 single in the United Kingdom in 1974, and reached no. 3 in the United States and Canada in 1975.The song was composed by lead singer Paul Carrack upon discovering that bassist Terry Comer had been secretly working with the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. Comer returned to Ace in time to play on the song.
We grew up thinking this was about a cheating woman. But it’s about the bass player. He was gigging with other bands behind their backs! And then he had to play this song of shame over and over. I love that story. 😂
The guitar solo is by lead guitarist Phil Harris. Alan 'Bam' King was the band's rhythm guitarist, formerly with the Action.
In 2020 'How Long' is featured in a commercial for Amazon.com

In so many interviews he always complained that he was not a pop singer but a hard rock musician. Well he didn’t demonstrate that at any of his concerts.He did not have the voice for hard rock,but never accepted that.

@billybupkis3688Paul is self taught. He never took a single music lesson of any kind😮
@macbeavers6938Paul wrote this song after getting screwed over by some business associates. It has nothing to do with an unfaithful lover. In any event, a true classic by a great musician😮

@roloninja117I would say as it stands (2026) this era was our musical peak, it slowly got worse over the decades until now which is probably our musical low in the last 100yrs...

@robertnorman4306and i love squeez
@tejamlOne of the best voices ever. Way back when our high school band and choir gave this a whirl it got a standing O.
The guitar solo was note for note and the choir harmonies were amazing.
But no one could hold a candle to Paul’s voice. No one.
Paul Carrack has got an awesome voice. He proved that in this amazing track and of course Mike & The Mechanics.
@marke9699With all due (great) respect to bands like, Slip, TOOL, etc., it just goes to show, all you need is a nice steady beat to keep everyone in line. Nothing fancy, not a whole bunch of gear, just smooth and flowing. This song brings some memory back ( P.S. Love me some Slipknot and TOOL ).
@Josf-l9dPaul Carrack's voice is just timeless and soulful.
@woodshed_momentsSteven number one i love you
