Hello. An American here. This video is a decent, but not great, explanation of American football basics. Frankly it's too brief. I will attempt to help, with FOUR fundamental concepts:



1) The two primary ways to score points are:

a) to kick the ball through the opponent's goal posts (field goal = 3 points)

b) to advance the ball across the opponent's goal line (touchdown = 6 points)

After scoring a touchdown, a team is awarded a 'conversion' attempt, similar to rugby. The conversion is worth one point if kicked through the posts, or 2 points if advanced across the goal line again.



2) The team possessing the ball can use two methods to try to advance the ball toward its opponent's goal line:

a) carry the ball toward the opponent's goal line until either tackled to the ground or forced out of bounds. This is called "rushing" the ball.

b) certain players are also allowed to throw ("pass") the ball forward to a teammate, who catches and runs until tackled or forced out of bounds. Only one forward pass is allowed before the ball carrier is tackled or forced out of bounds. If a forward pass hits the ground without being caught (an 'incomplete' forward pass), play is immediately stopped.



3) THE MOST ESSENTIAL CONCEPT TO UNDERSTAND is how teams obtain & maintain possession of the ball:

a) At the start of each half, or after scoring points, one team will "kick off" the ball to the other team, giving its opponent possession of the ball.

b) The team in possession of the ball is called "the offense", and the other team is called "the defense".

c) The offensive team has four attempts, called "downs", to move the ball at least 10 yards closer to their opponent's goal line. Each down ends when the ballcarrier is either tackled or forced out of bounds, or when an attempted forward pass is incomplete.

d) As long as the offense can continue to do this, they maintain possession of the ball indefinitely until they score.

e) If the offense fails to gain ten yards within a set of four downs, they give up possession of the ball to the other team, and the roles of "offense" and "defense" are reversed. IMPORTANT: This ebb and flow of which team controls the ball is the essence of the game.

f) Before each attempt to advance the ball (or 'down') begins, the situation will be declared by graphics on the TV screen or by the announcers, such as "third down & four yards to go" which states how many attempts (downs) remain for the offense to possess the ball, and how many more yards must be gained in order to retain possession of the ball.

g) The defensive team can also take the ball away from the offense via a "turnover": either intercepting a forward pass, or by causing the ball carrier to drop (fumble) the ball and then recovering the loose ball.

h) Typically, but not always, when a team on offense faces a 4th down situation, it will choose to "punt' (kick) the ball down the field, rather than risk giving the ball to its opponent should they fail to gain the required 10 yards on the fourth down. Punting the ball relinquishes possession of the ball, but doing so will give the ball to its opponent as far away as possible from the punting team's goal line.

4) The length of a game is 60 timed minutes, divided into two 30-minute halves. Each half is further divided into two 15-minute quarters. However, it usually takes three or more hours of real time to complete a game, because the clock is stopped frequently for various reasons, such as after each incomplete pass, each change of possession of the ball, or after points are scored. Each team is also allowed to stop the clock for strategic reasons three times per half (taking a 'time out'). Sadly, in the modern era televised games also have many, many interruptions (TV timeouts) for commercial advertisements that are paid for by the broadcast's sponsors.



If you have the above concepts in mind, you can begin watching games, and before long you will figure out the rest fairly easily. Hope this helps. Enjoy!!!
