An Honest Review of Netflix One Piece

Video Overview & Insights

Against all odds, Netflix has made a Live Action rendition worthy of the anime's name. The One Piece IS Real! But how'd they pull it off? And CAN we get much higher? Let's find out in this (for once not painfully) honest review.

We need more One Piece content! I don't really know what specifically just MORE. Your One Piece videos are my comfort watches when I'm having a rough day at work and my comfy watches when I'm not sure what I want to watch. More please!!

Zorro isn't Luffy's first mate? Live action anime or manga... you said Oda refuses to say if Zorro or Sanji is stronger he also refuses to say who his first mate

speaking from the future, CGi chopper is much better than I could have expected, but I think a Muppet would have been better, if only because he could be in more scenes for cheaper, although I also think it likely would have been more expressive if they got a good puppeteer and puppet maker.

Also, as someone who stays out of fandom spaces for toxicity reasons, I hugely prefer all episodes dropping at once. I understand that as someone who both enjoys and profits from extended discussion in hose spaces, you’d feel differently, but personally I hate drip feeding and it just means I have to wait until the last episode is out until I start watching it

Ooooookay now I get why the closeup shots look like they're smeared with Vaseline around the edges now, my TV is oldddd lol it was one of my only dings on the show, that close up shots look like terrible tik toks, but if it's a production/technical issue, I can't really blame the writers/directors.

I have a martial arts background. Most fight choreography & cinematography do very little for me, assuming they aren't actively painful to watch.

The fight scenes in OPLA are high art. Somehow they managed to top Kung Fu Hustle and Shaolin Soccer.

Now that you mention it, similarities born of inspiration & emulation deeply honor those earlier works.

They did Buggy SO well! (I also realized that "clown prince of crime" belongs in his list of titles. He's SO much better than the Joker - even the Heath Ledger version.)

Watching this after Season 2:

I would say like Zoro’s casting,
Taz to is too hot, YET he’s actually a caring cook, not just a creep (in the mango they call him a perv all the time for attempts to transact his culinary art for an adult one). I feel like this is best shown with the chemistry between Taz and Emily (esp towards the end of the season). The cook’s actually a mama’s boy and Nami sees through it so if/when Sanji pervs in the live action Nami and subsequently the crew’s vibe is ā€˜benefit of doubt’.

I second your take on this particular party’s personal perspectives on their characters in ways enriching the source or source adjacent material. For example, S2’s Smoker is a gahdam anti-heel, war hero/criminal Cody Rhodes meets Homelander twin. Also, I’ve read complaints about Miss Wednesday, and like yeah whatever, didn’t Oda-sensei admit in an s.b.s that his character design for the Princess of Alabasta with her hair down was way too similar to Nami anyways?Āæ The way Miss Chandran feels like she genuinely learns and earns her spot with the Straw Hats makes up for it. Plus, every other casting for Baroque Works — EEEECHHHT TOOO00PPP.

They seem to be keeping up with anime-iconcisim for fight scenes => Little Garden, anything BW because the production design is camp af. Chopper’s character design kind of had me all over the place emotionally, spiritually, metaphysically, etc,…however I think that’s the same intention as the character’s in the source material. Chopper’s backstory did in-fact make me cry as it did in the anime as it did when I read the manga for the first time.

P.S. not sure if my rods and cones are poles and pyramids, but I swear the colour grading was leagues more forgiving on smaller screen devices

I see that I’m the odd man out here, but I just have to say that for me the show is unwatchable level terrible.

I’ve been a die hard fan of one piece for decades, have an entire book shelf dedicated to it, watched the anime multiple times over. The live action for some reason is just nails on a chalkboard for me, and my wife and kids who are also big fans agree. The acting is really strange, the characters all seem too old? The pacing and changing the story around drives us all nuts. I know I’ll get a ton of hate for it but I’m just being honest about it.

It seems from what I’ve seen that there are people who are just such huge fans that they’ll say the show is great just because it’s One Piece media, I’d be curious to know their opinions on other live action adaptations of anime. FWIW I also thought the Cowboy Beebop adaptation sucked as well.

Now that season 2 is out, about the "Next season, if the next warlord response to Luffy saying "I'm gonna kick your ass" is anything other than "I don't even know who you are" we're gonna have beef" at 44:14,
Insert Smocker VS Luffy "Eh. Small fries" and "you're worth 30 million berries?".
Not a warlord, but pretty much that. God I loved that scene.

@LPCelllule
@

My problem starts at ā€œthe show is really really goodā€
No it isn’t. It’s on the anime adaptation scale good but it’s not better than the Japanese adaptation that people dislike like Attack on Titans, Bleach or Full Metal Alchemist or the old Death Note adaptation.
It’s a below average show. On a scale it’s 6/10 if we add acting, casting into the mix.

0:33 i“m currently rereading the manga from beginning, after a 5 year hiatus of not reading one piece, and I“m currently on volume 3. It is a peak manga and a lot of the stuff that makes the characters great you can see early on, as well as this spirit of rebellion, and damn it took only 3 volumes for me to try to convince a friend of mine to really try it (even though he hates the arts style)

@jokermorningstar5816

Back in fall of 2023 decided to give this show a shot because no one would shut up about one piece and the live action's episode count was far less intimidating than the anime's. And a year later I was fully caught up with the OP anime and manga. šŸ˜…

We really need to talk more about the soundtrack and leitmotifs of the OPLA. And I mean it, every singer character has some sort of motif, and it is amazing. Sorry for my lack of musical knowledge, but here’s a list of leitmotifs I noticed:

Luffy (Main Theme): adventure over the horizon
Zoro: East Asian flutes, discipline, zen
Nami: sneaky and upbeat, unless it goes all out and becomes gut wrenching
Usopp: laid back and unconventional
Sanji: suave jazz
Going Merry: tear-jerking, this ship is home
Buggy: psycho circus
Arlong: angry rap beats
Kuro: war cry of cats from hell
Marines: trumpets of justice
Gold Roger: old pirate story
Mihawk: Spanish strings, smooth dancer
Kaya: strings, innocent rich girl living in a mansion
Alvida: Baroque piano, medieval monster with style (like Dracula)
Don Krieg: heavy trumpet blares, footsteps of a war lord
Nezumi: rat running around the floor
Smoker: angry justice

Guess i give show another try. It lost me right at the beginning.
My problem was the writing of the character and some misunderstandings with them. A example can i find in the video: even if luffy would ask zoro wouldn suck, he would punch luffy in the ground and ask what is wrong with him. Zoro issnt just luffys loyal pet, he is luffys first mate (inofficial) and as such he desagre often with his captain or complain with him. Do i realy need to remember on water7? Or wisky peak? Or his fight against king when he fight for his goals and not luffys. Of cause he is loyal until death, but he isnt just a servant, he is more a partner in crime.
That is just one exampel. Another is that luffy isnt a hero. He doesnt help people out of kindness. Mostly he help people who were good to him, who he called a friend even if he dont know him as long and, that is important, who want to step up but cant. Luffy could easly beat up alvida but only finished her after corby step up for himself. He doesnt helped ussop against kuro because he knew his dad or something, but because ussop want to fight for his people but is to weak. Luffy isnt a hero. A hero must share his meat, but luffy want to eat it alone. And in my opinion luffy from opla is to much a hero.
If i would watch the entire serie i guess i would find more. Seeing character who i know since childhood are writen this way, dont know if i realy can do that šŸ˜…

Buggy's actor Jeff Ward just feasted so goddamn hard on that role

Also, the use of practical sets, effects, and snail puppets adds SO MUCH to the worldbuilding

The ships from Black Sails bring repurposed...perfect

Extremely well cast show too
