Andy Burnham wins Makerfield by-election | BBC News

Video Overview & Insights

Labour's Andy Burnham has won the Makerfield by-election, paving the way for him to challenge Keir Starmer as prime minister.

England shalt fall when Birnam wood come to Parliament

โ€” @Murraygoodhind

"Everyone knows that politics isn't working," he said during his victory speech.

He was blocked before by starmer. So glad he has got this. Andy burnham has worked very hard. He seems very genuine and doesnt talk at us but includes everyone

โ€” @eloise655

Burnham gained almost 25,000 votes, beating Reform UK's Robert Kenyon by more than 9,000 votes.

Hey listen itโ€™s not all about makerfield and the north
Labour should reflect the whole uk
Heโ€™s got two years before his arse is kicked out and conservative or reform take over

Hope he slays the AI robot man in No10 and makes good on these promises. But didn't Starmer say the same stuff in 2024!!!

@ops7917

One step forward for Starmer, two steps back. Whoopie, he won a die hard Labour seat. Now Burnham and others have the power they need to turn on him. With Polanski and Farage circling the corpse of Starmer's Cult, not fun times ahead for this lot

Its not who votes ,its who counts them

Think it's time to rejoin Labour to vote for Burnham in the inevitable Leadership election

@carlcassidy185
@

Racist Gangs and Riots are NOT what most of the people in Makerfield want for their future !
Farage is a total fraud and people need to do some research as to who funds him, is the funding legal , who does he owe favours to?
If you canโ€™t be bothered I,ll tell you .. the super rich

@michaelGarvey6587
@

Will we get our Labour Party back, or just a cosmetic improvement?
We'll see if Burnham does re-nationalise water and does dare tax the super-rich and order that proper safeguards be put on Social Media instead of blaming the kids.
Meanwhile, for actual Labour Policies (which all the Right hate), there's the Greens.

Reform bent over Burnham knee and well and truly โ€ฆโ€ฆโ€ฆ.SPANKED ๐Ÿ’ฅ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿป

Controlled opposition works again !
Now for some proper communist party in fighting ๐Ÿ˜

If Labour thinks Burnham is their answer to everything they are delusional. They should be consolidating around Starmer not tearing itself apart to the glee of Reform and the Cons

I can't fathom how stupid, yes stupid people were to vote for Labour. The country is on its arse, and they've voted for more of the same, please. Extraordinary.

@timfly767

As Andy said... this IS Labours last chance...

... if the Labour party does not proscribe Zionism and Zionists... and reject Zionist donors ... and the corruption which goes with it...

... then it is doomed...

Ed miliband wanted Burnham in because he was one of the main politicians that wanted the new north train network built and managed to get it despite no-one knowing building costs and full planing so they spent billions and then just stopped building anything. That must sound great for milibands new NetZero renewable energy scheme

@antman576

Wonderful that he attacked Trumpโ€™s America directly.

And so now the madness begins.

Well, not heard passion like that for a while. We will see whether he does what the sensible people want.

Absolute travesty.

@DarkJaneway

Anyone thinking Burham is the solution is nuts. The country is already on the mend under Starmer and a change of PM would just be done to satisfy the small minded.

we're so f'ed

@justjack5833
@

So is he going to move parliament up North ? Lots of empty shops and factories that could be used as offices for MPs.

@jablot5054

GLAD reform lost.

@jwillk42
@

I hope this โ€˜winโ€™ doesnโ€™t make him think heโ€™s โ€˜the bestโ€™ The only reason he won is because people are desperate for change. I donโ€™t feel easy about his belief that trans should be allowed to use womenโ€™s toilets & changing rooms. Thatโ€™s a big fat NO from me!

@Barbara-yj5tl

The 15k votes for the Reform UK candidate are not a mandate for that specific individualโ€™s policy platform, but a vote against the status quo. The danger is that this creates a feedback loop where voters repeatedly hand the scalpel to the wrong person, hoping that the disruption itself will fix the "disease" of the current system, without considering whether the person has the clinical skills to do so. The fact that a bigot with no relevant experience got 15696 votes is a travesty and shows that many voters lack basic intellectual abilities to understand what's a stake and should be prohibited from civic participation.

ANDY BURNHAM has won the Makerfield election and thatโ€™s good for Labour. As for becoming Labour leader we will have to see if his magic wand, to give cash to the public has any basis in reality ? The Tories left the country in an ECONOMIC mess after 14 years and the media want to make a comparison of progress after 24 months. Not to mention the current AMERICAN fiasco, wreaking World economies in its illegal war in IRAN, and MORE importantly, the RUSSIAN WAR in UKRAINEe. Countries have budgets and local MPs must recognise, that International issues are having the greater impact. I have been a Labour Party member since 1970, and I have had the confidence, that Labour is the best party with the right ETHOS for improving working class quality of life. Burnham is an MP, I did not vote for him in the Leadership challenge after Jeremy Corbyn stepped down, I voted for 3 ladies, (one of whom, is still in the cabinet and one not yet become a member of the cabinet) However, that was not be, and we have Sir Keir Starmer as our Prime Minister. If there is a leadership challenge, I expect the whole labour membership to back the current PM, because we must not let MEDIA B/S divert us from our election 2024 mandate. Which is a far bigger mountain to climb, than Andy Burnham's pimple in Makerfield. His DEVISIVE comments are damaging the Labour Party and our main obligation is to the 2024 mandate, and the 411 constituencies who voted for Labour. Not just a constituency in Greater Manchester, where their previous choice turned out to be a potential agitating infiltrator.

@philipbaker4840
@

Letโ€™s hope they donโ€™t do a leadership contest as neither of these 2 wallies are suitable

Thank the lord!!

"Ha-ha! Restore only got 7% of the vote!"

It took the Green Party 12 years to get above 1%. It then took them another two decades to get above 5%. Restore have existed for less than 6 months.

Burnham is useless too. He was a useless minor flash in the pan minister too. He just has not been in this government so is not tainted by the same nonsense and disaster that he will now continue too. Honeymoon bs will last days!!๐Ÿ˜‚

@peterg25

It pure pantomime, Starmer knows like the rest of the country, heโ€™s done for. Itโ€™s futile for him to say he wonโ€™t walk away, heโ€™ll just have to go through the motions and pretend, then finally say โ€œ Andy now has my full backingโ€. Yada yada.

@lousheeny

Give it a year, when Burnham makes absolutely no difference, then it's a gift to Reform at the next election. ๐Ÿ™‚

@mattr46

Why would Labour and Burnham worry about pre election Manifesto promises. They just ignore them and bring in more crazy policies, fail and U turn so more of the same then. ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚
