Amazing interview & thanks for being Dr. Fahey on too!!
Broccoli sprouts may seem small, but the science behind them is extraordinary. In this episode, I’m joined by Dr Jed Fahey, nutritional biochemist and former Johns Hopkins researcher who pioneered work on sulforaphane, and Doug Evans, entrepreneur and author of The Sprout Book. Together they explain why sprouts are among the most nutrient-dense foods we can grow, and how to incorporate them safely and affordably into daily life.
We explore what sulforaphane is and how it works in the body, the evidence behind broccoli sprouts in cancer prevention, autism, diabetes, air pollution, and more, plus very practical advice for sprouting at home. Jed and Doug also share the importance of seed quality and third-party testing, how to avoid common pitfalls, and why sprouting may offer a solution to food access and equality.
Could we freeze the sprouts for a few days and take them out of the freezer as needed?
What We Cover
- What sprouts are and why broccoli sprouts are unique
Love the show generally, but this episode felt like an interview with one scientist, and one guy trying to promote his business. Should steer clear of this sort of conflict imo
- Sulforaphane: how it forms and what it does in the body
- The strongest areas of human evidence, from cancer to air pollution
We put mixed sprouts on our loaded soaked org soy milk oats chia sunflower pumpkin seed breakfast with a scoop of delicious yougart and a little raw tumeric and ginger marinated with honey 😂 you cant even taste the sprouts fantastic!
- Dosing: how much is useful and how often
- Sprouts vs supplements: which is best and when
I gave up sprouting, was too much work. But thankfully prostaphane is delivered in the UK, so I take two caps every other day and up my dose during illness. I have to say I don’t notice any difference in energy when I cycle off though.
- Food safety and how to sprout safely at home
- Practical tips for sprouting and easy ways to eat them
I have bought cereal from "sprouted wheat" that also speaks of how it is the best way to get enzymes. Good stuff or just hype?
- Accessibility, cost, and the role of sprouts in food justice

Love this conversation! These wonderful guests were SO fun to listen to. My mom sprouted when I was younger in jars on our counter....I currently buy sprouts from the store but after listening to this, I am totally motivated to get Doug's sprouting system and start my own now! Thanks Simon for another wonderful episode. ❤

00:00:00 - Why Sprouts Stayed a Garnish: History, Culture & the Profit Problem
I’m generally a big fan of the podcast but this episode was genuinely tough to listen to. I appreciate Doug’s enthusiasm (to a point) but the heavy bias, anecdotes, and story telling in general is the kind of language that usually raises red flags.
I’m not saying broccoli sprouts aren’t healthy, but The Proof is somewhere I come for evidence based, nuanced discussion. I felt like this fell short of the mark and was quite disappointing.

Protective against viruses? This is The Proof. Note that there is no proof whatsoever that a virus has ever been extracted from a symptomatic (or asymptomatic) person who has a cold or any other disease. 01:01:58 - Can Broccoli Sprouts Prevent Cancer, and How Much Do We Need?
01:09:03 - Can You Trust Sprout Supplements?
Question 1: are the roots the major source of these phytochemical or are they also found in the above ground stems that turn green? I tried growing the broccoli and radish sprouts but they were too fragile for our chaotic lifestyle. So I ended up switching to microgreens grown on a thin layer of sterile indoor potting soil under lights. I never have a problem with mold on the microgreens. I grow them in small plastic food trays that would have been tossed in the recycle bin. The grandkids enjoy just clipping the little green stems at the dinner table. A big advantage is that if I we miss a few days due to negligence or travel they just keep growing and do not get moldy (I water from below so it does not have to be daily). The spent soil with their roots just becomes compost which I age before using again.
Question 2: roots push exudates into the soil that feed the soil biome which makes the plant stronger. When you rinse the roots, aren't you washing away the exudates and therefore an important source of natural plant food that would make the little stems stronger? Or are you only rinsing away the mold that's trying to gain a foothold? Has anyone analysed the rinse water.

01:19:46 - Sulforaphane’s Role in Viruses, Pollution, Autism & Parkinson’s
01:33:10 - Sprouts for Short-Term vs Long-Term Health
I thank you chaps for an interesting discussion! There are two types of sulforaphane R and S. The R form is in broccoli and the sprouts. S form is synthetic and does not have the same activity.
Note that AUTISTIC brains when analysed all had VERY high levels of aluminum versus the non-autistic brains (donor brains from a brain bank in England). Same result for Alzheimer's (repeated in Colombia), MS and Parkinson's - I think Epilepsy too. I have looked into all the miracle cures, like zeolite, and there is no evidence that they have any ability to detox the brain of aluminum. However there is one - O-SILICIC ACID is known to sequester aluminum oxides/hydroxides in the body to form hydroxy alumino-silicates which the kidneys filter out. It took a friend of mine 7 months to go from early onset ALZ to "normal". Aluminum can be measured in the urine (Al assay). If sulphoraphane is also enabling a detox of this metal via the kidneys then I suggest you do a pee test (not to be confused with p value for probability!).
I think it should be pronounced sulfo - RAphane. "Sulfur in the raddish/cabbage family". But that's just me being pedantic - take no notice.
BTW: NOT silica - that's a different molecule. Ortho silicic acid is found in some mineral waters like Fiji, Volvic, Gerolsteiner, Spritzer. Acilis in the UK. Try to find one with >35mg/L and, very important, zero or low level of fluoride anion. I wonder if there could be some synergy in the use of both R sulforaphane and silicon-rich mineral water?
For more, just search on "aluminum" author "Exley". Then follow all the leads. Cheers

I’m sure broccoli sprouts are healthy and I choose to sprout and eat them. But they are so clearly biased due to their company and desperately trying to latch onto any study or anecdote to prove their case. It really feels like a sales pitch to Simon and it was painful to watch. I think it’s great for you but not the miracle that they hope it to be.

I have Doug’s sprouting jars and high-glucoraphanin broccoli and salad mix seeds. His sprouting system makes it easy to easily grow huge amounts of sprouts. Everything is very high quality with lots of website support on how to harvest them. I have emailed Doug with questions and he quickly responds. I am grateful, thank you Doug!

LOVE IT !!! I buy a Cacao / Broccoli sprout powdered mix every day - it is delicious and highly nutritious - a blend of five different leaf powders including barley grass and kale along with broccoli sprout powder, combined with antioxidant-rich cacao and cocoa. Cold pressed when nutrients are at their peak levels. 2 tsps in water or plant milk and it's like a milk shake full of sulforaphane ;)

I've been sprouting for a couple of years, with no issues, but I'll start soaking the seed in white vinegar for 10 mins before sprouting now, thank you. I love that you're taking about sprouts ❤ it's such a cool health hack 🎉
More User Perspectives
fun to learn via these personalities!! (each remind me of professors I've had a class w/ before, lol) just texted my fitness fan brother in Japan to get sprouting :) who doesn't love a whole food, diy option? bravo Simon for pinning down 'how much is a balanced amt' and differentiating extract v. sprouts, as well as fringe v. study based 🙏 best banter in the show: the slogan 'science and sizzle' along w/ an appropriate pause on the word 'bleach' for a second... 😊thx for combing thru this newish trend w/ much care til the very end 💚
@AG-jz8vdMumm's sprouting seeds in Saskatchewan has organic seeds at a very good price. I've been buying from them for years.
@DRokasIt would be good to get Jed back on alone. Interesting talk
@jenniferclifford4669DOUG ❤ WE NEED INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING
@KatoKato-mx1gfDOUG ❤❤❤
@KatoKato-mx1gfGood informative discussion on the value of sprouting. Could have been much better if Doug Evans didn't monopolize the conversation. Dr Fahey, the real expert on the subject, couldn't talk for anymore than 5-10 seconds without being interrupted, and talked over, by Evans.

@cristianpuerto5549Can you freeze them ?
@elizabethsievert7390Just by TruBrock supplement it's like 50 mg way more than you need per week yet alone per day I just take one of those
@craige3423I quit alfalfa sprouts from the grocery store years ago due to frequent Lysteria outbreaks.
@sulj3373What a hoot listening to Dough with the Dr and Simon trying to reel him in hahahaha One of the best discussions ever. This week I was actually gonna start sproutin ...
@kmc7473Why do Dr. Fahey and podcast hosts he speaks with - like Simon Hill here and Rhonda Patrick - not more clearly recommend most listeners simply eat a certain amount of broccoli and other cruciferous vegetables every day - maybe along with radish, mustard seed powder for myrocinase? Most people can easily and cheaply buy bags of frozen broccoli florets from the grocery store. Why the push for home-grown broccoli sprouts instead? Keeping a sprouts corner in your home is an eccentric hobby, subject to contamination, and even a fervent advocate like Rhonda Patrick admits that broccoli sprouts taste terrible.
@jeremylavineDoug Evans founded Juicero - a ridiculous $700 machine that literally just squeezed juice out of pouches, but only overpriced proprietary juice pouches, and required a $160/month subscription to do so - and more recently advocated "raw water", an utterly absurd anti scientific notion. Why should consumers trust yet another food gizmo from this guy with inflated health claims? Why would Simon Hill or Dr. Fahey want their names associated with his?
@jeremylavineI sprouted for years b4 I switched to moringa powder out of convenience for sulforaphane but am worried about toxicity even tho I source from Florida but always do a big spoonful in daily protein shake still, y aren’t more people on moringa tho like dr Patrick got out of it. Btw I have a moringa tree & broccoli in garden it’s just a pain to protect & process lol. But moringa grows like a weed, just doesn’t take to texas freezes well sadly, it didn’t come back
@jjjames6894I had the ‘NRF-2’ watch this episode immediately & didn’t ‘sulforaphane’ at all, loved it!
@jjjames6894I am listening to this one right now. I am a big fan of sprouts. They are a major part of my diet at a little over 1 kg a day. They require about as much attention as watering a house plant does → next to none at all. So, "busy-ness" is not an excuse. They require less effort than "ordering in" and they are far more delicious. On top of that, on the condition that the right seeds are being selected, they are just about the cheapest food money can buy. I find zero downsides to them.
Health claims are usually over the top and unverifiable, but I see them for what they are: vegetables.
I'm loving this so much!!❤🎉😂
@madamplantHill I saw the promo for the survey but will weigh in here. My suggestion is to develop an intersectionality approach between your nutrition threads and the allopathic guys ie Soffer and Dayspring. Get them involved with that last topic on n-3 and n-6 ratios and this one on sprouting and phytochemicals. Great study by Juronski and others on the Omegas in rats which supports your upstream hypothesis on n-6 oveload by the way and its on NIH. Waiting for your lipid retest sans coconut fats in your diet. Soffer and Dayspring are super smart guys and I would be thrilled to see them bring their analytical and clinical methodology to bear on this nutritional thread.
@danielpolk3866Honestly, my own experience with flavor development in utero was not the same. I avoided sugar with my first child, ate vegetables, fruit, and Indian food (my husband is Indian). We have tried keeping up the good food habits however my oldest son will not eat Indian food, eats few vegetables (except broccoli), and prefers highly processed foods. I should probably mention he is also Level 1 autistic. I wish there were more studies and talk about all this research and how this relates to neurodivergent individuals, specifically autism.
I really appreciate the discussion they had on sulphoraphane’s affect on autism.
Listen everyone, this is one of the most incredible food ever to feel good. Just get some jars and seeds and enjoy the effects.
@TheHouseofFruitsBroccoli sprouts are pretty good.👍🏽 Should we wash them? When I do, the seeds pop off. Should I blanch them or eat raw?
@alexandrinerigsbyhenry30321urst! and brussel sprouts have quite frankly changed my life. Sulphoraphane (sp) is a game changer for these old arthritic knees!
