Backrooms Spoiler Review (ENDING EXPLAINED)

Finally watched the backrooms. I really enjoyed this movie especially with things being misremembered because of trauma is really interesting.

me and my gf really enjoyed this movie. I as someone who is familiar with kane's work and she as someone who barely knew anything about the backrooms in general.
We both had no real expectations and I think that helped us to enjoy it as the movie it wants to be. We didn't expect overstimulated creature horror.
We still discuss about the film and what certain actions, sentences or symbols could mean.

I def gotta check this movie out. So captain Clark is to Clark as pyramid head is to james it sounds like.

We needed to see so much more exploring cuz I feel like the first movie is the perfect one to do a montage scene. Maybe even if we just see sped up clips of him wandering around from the a sync pov but cmon bruh. As soon as the two kids died it was game over movie went to a 5/10 for me was riding at an 8.5

i interpreted the backrooms is a metaphor for dementia

Clark’s memory of the night his ex wife broke up with him keeps coming up again and again, a core memory that gets more hazy, more emotionally charged over time

The rooms. The more it remembers, the more it forgets

The scientists who confront Mary at the end of the film. they represent doctors, the doctors in nursery homes and hospitals that press poor dementia patients with questions when they don’t know why. Mary being only able to ask a few questions before becoming scared and asking where she is and why she’s there represents exactly how a patient suffering dementia would act upon being in an environment they don’t understand.

i noticed that a song from “The Caretaker” plays somewhere in the middle of the film. it’s an album ABOUT dementia, and how the mind fades away the older a person gets with it


i feel like matpat but oh my god

I find it overall gloomy , not interms of being scary. A was focused on the characters and how they handle the paths the chose its relatable for me and i think for everyone too. Some stories, real or fiction doesnt always have proper closures. I can relate to clark on how he always know that he is on the wrong, that he is always the problem. Some people take it well and change for good, some people cut and run. For me its just the way life goes.

The movie really did struggle with clearly marking the passage of time, as someone that watches a lot of movies, it was NOT clear. I legit thought it had been about a day or so leading up to the dinner table scene when Mary was looking for him. That was probably the biggest drawback when watching the movie, it made Clark's behavior really confusing, like how or why did he just snap so quickly?

I went into this blind w/o the benefit of the YT series. For a 20-year-old to explore the subconscious mind by way of liminal horror is actually brilliant. In ley terms: INSIDE OUT meets THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT.

I kept hearing about Backrooms and Obsession being box office spectacles and yet...both sucked. Backrooms was boring and uneventful, obsession was full of the message. Trash movies all around. But hey, what should i expect from theaters these days? $20 a ticket for slop. Im good.

And if you really think about it, we all created the backrooms, since that first picture on 4chain, we've all contributed to the manifestation of the backrooms by creating stories and ideas that have turned the backrooms into what it is, meta asf.

I thought Backrooms was a phenomenal movie. Everything was great. The acting, the eerie score, the sets, the premis, even the CGI was very well done. And I also have NEVER seen one of the shorts. I actually think the movie is functionally perfect. Even the thing about the passage of time just made the movie feel more psychologically disjointed, which is exactly the feeling the movie was trying to capture. I also LOVED the SCP foundation angle and absolutely did NOT expect that ending.

Also, I saw Pirate Clark eating Clark as Clark finally surrendering to his inner demons after the therapist gave him permission to not change. In that moment the moderated Clark was overcome by the True Clark, aka Pirate Clark.

For me the biggest thing to note is not that these themes and aspects that you and many seem to mention don’t exist but rather the execution is done poorly. I think what I wanted most in this film wasn’t monsters, jump scares, a walking sim, etc. but I just wanted it to be clever and at times it was but the marks on target still didn’t outweigh the ones that missed. My expectations for this movie was that its was going to be as the tic focus or in other words abstract but my hopes for the movie were that it would be more so like an analog horror but with its advantages of being a fail it would focus more on the show don’t tell aspects of things rather than relying on text. However most of the important aspects of the movie were given away in the first few minutes via dialogue and it’s done so in such an obvious way. When I heard the narration at the beginning I knew it was going to be the basis of the whole movie but I wasn’t invested yet. Then came the therapy session and it was there I noticed what the film was going to be. This seen was what lowered my expectations drastically. It was boring and it went on for too long in my opinion. Yet I knew it was critical to the story yet I just couldn’t care and it was at that point where I sort of shut off my brain more so involuntarily. Despite this slow start Clark does get to the back rooms relatively early and honestly that initial exploration scene went on for too long and wasn’t interesting enough. Sure it was fine for the first watch but doubt it be interesting for a rewatch. The stool scene was confusing and most people say oh clearly he was drunk and needed something to remember that should be obvious but no it isn’t. It was shot in an extremely weird way. Me personally I initially interpreted it as him trying to escape but being sent back. So I thought he grabbed the stool to try and break the wall or something. I think a scene or could have clarified that confusion. Sure it could be a skill issue as someone who has never drank or really have been around drinkers something that may seem obvious just slipped my mind but even then at the moment I forgot that he had been drinking because in between those scenes was a long segment of a man walking not even stumbling around a bizarre location. I was also trying to keep my mind rather open to interpretation so sorry if the obvious wasn’t clear. I actually didn’t mind the time skips and thought the visuals ques were more than enough however my problem with them was the context of which it skipped over it could be perceived as a Spider-Man homecoming situation where we could just skip the origins story or in this case skip the cliche no believes man but we never learned why he was so obsessed with it or in other words why or how he kept going back. Which bothered me a bit. Like sure we knew this was a struggling man but we don’t know how far gone he was or what made the alternative world more intriguing to him as an individual. The characters are a huge issue here we can’t over look they feel as the story could have worked without them or at least each other. In a film with so little characters already have them play off of each other. Again now I know what people will say things like the main character of the story is the back rooms like okay then make that the focus of the story have the characters interact with the world in interesting ways or in this instance their memories. Like again I suppose that was made abundantly clear with the draw a dog line. That is the focus of the story. Yet it wasn’t an interesting line. It wasn’t meaningful and overall very niche and the film doesn’t do anything interesting with the concept other than see this it’s weird innit? It’s just so forced in my opinion like if it were shown rather than told at least initially it would make things more interesting. Like if you have an already uninteresting line that shapes the whole premise of your story’s theme then make it interesting that’s story telling. The last third or maybe even second half was a slow burner so much so that the final chase sequence was so boring I dosed out multiple times only to be called back by some loud sound. It got so bad that the only reason the therapist survives was non other to set up a sequel and it’s done so obvious and tediously. I wish we could have learned both about the characters and the world simultaneously. But often times it felt the film had to break away to tell you about the characters so the world had some sort of structure. Those first person sort of segments were phenomenal especially that Christmas tree scene unfortunately it felt out of place though.

Cris, I’ve been following you for a while even when you and Austin did Film Strip you have gotten me thru the toughest times I know your big now in the film space I watch your vids all the time but… I do have to disagree (not in a negative way) that it was funny for Clark sleeping in the furniture store and drinking because I went through that in real life because it did resonate with me personally I think maybe give it another watch I saw it 3 times and I also did have a horrible crowd at my theater so the sound design was IMPOSSIBLE to hear 😂 but all love my guy I always respect your work and opinions it may not work but Clark is that complex, as the the “complex” itself is but thank you for the content luv u brotha 🎉❤

Excellent review! I loved this movie even though i did have an anxiety attack after it was over. I just saw it thurs night (june 11th) and itll be with me forever. It for sure had a plot and ur fear or uneasiness depended on ur real ones. Like i have a fear of basements and one of getting lost. Im also bipolar so the mental health themes were very interesting. The other "people" in the dinner scene freaked me out. The man at the table was the worst for me. But when that red head took off running i jumped so hard. While i enjoyed Obsession, i wasnt raving about it like others. The actress was perfect and i did like the supernatural element, i felt like if uve seen one crazy in love person movie you've seen them all. I thought it was good but dont have to see it again. I enjoyed Hokum more than Obsession. But i loved ur take on this movie.

The scene with the drawn on door reminds me of the treehouse episode in Drake and Josh when Drake drew a door but didn't cut it out 😂

People complaining should really go back to watching the likes of Conjuring and the recent Insidious films

11:35 after watching the movie, I don’t feel like I HAVE to watch the web series, I genuinely want to and I’ve been looking forward to watching it, after I saw the movie, which I did today.

Clark was literally murdering folks in the name of science and trauma

But why did it kill the employees? I'd like to know the reasoning behind why whatever killed them decided to do so.

Instead of pirate clark the entity could have been a shapeshifter and it resembles whomever is currently in the backrooms. When its chasing Mary imagine how more cathartic it would have been if it changed to look like her mom which then she has to defeat.

The found footage segment was definetly a highlight for me, the moment where Bobby's rope would not tie out, I knew he is a goner, and the scene where he is pulled into the door, that was horrifying.

Also, I think the movies messege, with all the commercials is about avoiding a life choice that would make you confront things, as in, you choose the safest option, where nobody can hurt you, instead of going towards a path you actually want, confronting obsticles of life... I hope I explained in a way thats understandable. The Movie is much more than just a horror movie. Its a psychological thriller, with a lot of heavy metaphors and meanings, I a think a lot more people should see it.

I loved it definitely the first half had me scared lmao up to the part where all 3 go record in the backrooms it was just slow and creepy . But other parts after also scared me lmao 😂

are actually really good if you have a real attention span

i understood most of this during my first watch. all i needed clarity was some of Mary’s backstory and Mary and Clark’s characters overall. They both embody the main parts of the backrooms. Clark is an architect and Mary is a therapist. So Clark embodies the architectural part of the backrooms while Mary embodies how the place manipulates itself through others minds. Much like how a therapist can sort of manipulate a person’s mind to help them in some way.

The Pirate Monster represents everything he hates about himself.

I agree with you Chris everything 100% I loved I understood the movie right away. Its literally like the Silent hill video games with it’s psychological horror. People that didn’t understand the movie, means their brain doesn’t work or something, and not everything is about jump scare. 10/10 movie

Hot take: the movie ISNT supposed to be a full clarity of what’s going on as Kane himself said his YouTube videos are in the canon of the movie as well, but there are certain aspects and pieces he hasn’t revealed yet so we can’t put all the pieces together yet

Enjoyed the movie, my fiancée didn’t though. I was pretty encapsulated by the atmosphere it provided. The pirate monster was super cheesy though and almost took me out of it

Story pretty simple
Async opens door into backrooms
Clark and Mary fall into backrooms like Alice in Wonderland
Backroom clones their memories into entities
Clark killed by entity
Mary escapes into Asyncs arms
She is interrogated and then dumped back into backrooms where she is either killed or is reliving her trauma..

Clark wasn’t abusive to his wife, on the contrary the payed for her education

I don’t think you have to enter the backrooms for it to copy your memories, cause the entity has always been pirate Clark from the very start of the movie. In the opening found footage scene when the Async employee runs out of that room that has wallpaper that looks like the outdoors, and he bumps into the entity, you can actually see that it has a peg leg if you slow the scene down
