To have such leverage over a guy who has openly and gleefully committed bad acts, often illegal and always cruel, perhaps even murderous, who knows what might result from exercising the authority? An old man with limited mental acuity in declining health will do anything to achieve mortality even if his legacy is one of unimaginable ruin and destruction.

@brianbennett9478I's very ironic to claim that the country with the most powerful military in the history of the world doesn't need to threaten, if you never intend to live up to that pledge. The result was that the U.S. was cowed by Russian nukes while Ukraine was ravaged, without the Russians ever having to actually use them. In retrospect, the U.S. should have said, "After WW2, even some Americans have advocated the use of nuclear weapons, but cooler heads have always prevailed. In this instance the Ukrainians are in such extremity in the face of unjust Russian invasion that: if Ukraine is not concerned about the use of Russian nukes, neither will we be on their behalf. The existence of Russian nuclear weapons will not constrain U.S. conventional military aid to Ukraine in any way. We fully expect cooler heads to prevail in Russia on the question of nuclear weapon use, as well." This sends a similar message to Russia, but it doesn't let them constrain U.S. action nearly as much.
@spencerbookman2523No one who's observed Trump can not be aware that he's utterly incompetent and guilty of massive negligence. But that said, the overwhelming problem we have is that we elected him again. After seeing him in inaction and stupidity for 4 years, and voting him out of office, we then put him back in office yet again? Our society is the real problem, and the one that we very well may not be able to overcome.
