Chuck Jones - The Evolution of an Artist

Video Overview & Insights

If you grew up watching Looney Tunes, then you know Chuck Jones, one of all-time masters of visual comedy. Normally I would talk about his ingenious framing and timing, but not today. Instead, I’d like to explore the evolution of his sensibilities as an artist. To see the names of the films, press the CC button and select “Movie Titles.”

Chuck Jones was probably my parents' favorite animation director.

My dad liked the Coyote/Road Runner, Marvin the Martian, and Wolf/Sheepdog cartoons.
My mom liked Pepe LePew, Charlie Dog, and Michigan J. Frog.

I love Chuck Jones' work. Whenever I saw cartoons, especially episodes of Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner, I never missed one if I saw his name in the credits.

Chuck got the RoanRunner/Coyote gag from Mark Twain's "Roughing It", except in the book it was a Dog chasing a Coyote.

If he were still alive, he could return to looney tunes and tom and jerry projects or potentially drawing countryhumans.

Consider the descriptions of Daffy Duck, starting at 2.15 to 2.50 ... and substitute the name 'Donald Trump'.
Scarily accurate apart from the phrase "less crazy."

8:20 Hooray for inspiration. A professional once said that only amateurs worked on inspiration (implying that professionals worked on specific given tasks and deadlines). My response was, no wonder there is so much uninspired professional crap out there.

Absolutely to this day, LOVE luney toons.
They really made the best of the "freedom of humor" they enjoyed in those days.

Every frame was perfect. But not only that, the FLUITIDY was something that couldn't be replicated even by shows emulating the golden Looney Tunes later on. Disney was the only other company with this level of smoothness in the animation but it was not nearly as funny or clever for the most part.

My dad loved these cartoons and no matter how often he saw them, he chuckled. His particular favourite was Foghorn Leghorn.

I have no way to gauge this, but I can only hope that kids nowadays grow up seeing some of these classic cartoons and not just cocomelon and skibidi toilet.

My favourite part of this is that every lesson we can learn from Chuck Jones' work can be applied to almost any kind of art, dramatic or comedic. Creative writing is a longtime hobby of mine and every lesson conveyed in this video has been such a huge influence on me and my own evolution in the craft. I genuinely feel inspired and thankful every time I watch this video.

I went to Chuck Jones's 80th birthday show at the Hollywood Bowl. Most memorable was the big screen showing of "What's Opera Doc?" with a live orchestra.
