Colin Farrell Opens Up About His Son With Angelman Syndrome | PEOPLE
Video Overview & Insights
Colin Farrell shares his personal journey as the father of his 20-year-old son, James, who has been diagnosed with Angelman syndrome, a rare and debilitating neurogenetic disorder. For the first time, Farrell opens up about the challenges and rewards of raising a child with this condition, which impacts mobility, speech, and cognitive abilities. He also discusses why he is launching the Colin Farrell Foundation, a new initiative dedicated to helping adults with intellectual disabilities like James lead fuller, more independent lives.
Well done Colin, both for sharing your personal experiences and for trying to do something worthwhile for others. In UK and Sweden adults with disabilities can live independent but supported lives. Care is not withdrawn at the age of 21. It is, of course, no picnic. Parents often have to fight to get places and to make sure that the care is good and consistent. It makes me proud of our societies, though, to see the dignity of these lives and to see the love and joy in all of the relationships that go into making them possible. Good luck with your foundation and anything else you get involved with.
The Colin Farrell Foundation aims to support families and caregivers of adult children with developmental disabilities through advocacy, education, and innovative programs that focus on increasing independence and enhancing quality of life. Farrell's mission is to create a more inclusive world where adults with intellectual disabilities are provided with the resources, support, and opportunities they need to thrive.

I haven't seen Colin Farrell in ages. My life has been too hectic to watch movies. But Colin Farrell starred in the best action movie ever made—the 2006 *Miami Vice*. It’s great to know he’s doing well and is a devoted dad. Stay strong, brother; you’re one of the most important people in my life's journey.

I don't know anything else about Colin Farrell, but if this is how he conducts himself, and how he views the world, he gets the, "Gold Star" as a human being. ❤

Thank you for sharing your story with us. God bless your Sons and your family. James you are a gift from God. I was told my son has developmental delays and he is "on the spectrum". I've never ever allowed him to be defined by a label. God gave me him for a reason and I am blessed he chose me to be his Mother. He achieves every day and I love him more and more every day ✝️ God bless you

Life is fragile hold the ones you love everyday ❤
@RachelMurray-h7rWhat a beautiful man CF is. And such a positive man and clearly amazing father. 🙏
@ReneeK628My son is 34yrs old. He has faced several debilitating/ostracizing conditions thru-out his life. I have sought resources to help him become as autonomous as is possible and I am constantly and consistently denied - In multiple states, across multiple departments and programs within both state and federal government's. Almost 30yrs of begging. I'm also severely disabled.
Mr. Farrell, I have experienced both being a parent of a child with special needs and someone who has lost most of my autonomy since the age of 32. Your eloquence, compassion, understanding, and honesty are refreshing and very uplifting. Again, thank you.
So so incredibly grateful for your honesty and care and love for your son...I love how you speak of him in first person language you are educating the world... You are such a great example of respecting all ....I have worked and taught in public education with individuals with various disabilities for over 30 years my focus was teaching job skills...I have to say i taught some of the greatest workers that I have ever seen....in my life...keep up the good fight you are doing great things for James and so many others...I just came across your channel radomly.. be well and much love...
@KimNigroColin is just so inherently likable. He presents first and foremost as a stellar man and father. I came looking for clips of him speaking with his Irish accent as opposed to an American accent. Why is it that UK actors speak with an American accent so much better than we speak with an Irish, English, or Scottish accent?
@purplelisa1960He has a one way ticket to heaven.. it's said those born with severe mental disabilities are protect by God they are his most righteous souls
@SuzanneWhippleWe have two autistic boys, 27 and 21. Super smart, mostly self-sufficient but struggle finding work. The young one tunes pianos for a hobby, wants to pursue that as a career, it’s a tricky path. He also transcribes music by ear (and he has only one ear). The oldest is big into 3D modeling, Mario Kart, makes his own playable tracks. Both are very quick on the computer. As for services, they’ve always been on that fence between “need” and “self sufficient.” They’ve never received SSI because they’re “not autistic enough,” we were told. We’re 60 and 55 ourselves, won’t live forever, thankfully they’ll be taken care of after we all go. Not every kiddo is that fortunate.
@vinsgraphicsI have so much respect for him now.
@JohnChewukColin and his son are great men!
@175726Seems like a good guy, strength to those fighting battles of all sizes.
@HamiltonsInSpainBoth are handsome fellas!
@edieparker4679God bless you , James, and your family.
@stevehogan8829It is a heavy cross you carry. I can offer you and your boys prayer. I believe James will help you get to heaven.
@eileenvachMy son had Angelman Syndrome. He passed away at age 19 because of complications with the syndrome. I am just bawling watching this.
@ErnestineHamilton-b8qThank you Colin 💙
@MommaT-g6kColin, you don't have to apologize for being the kind of dad a lot of children would love to have. What you overcame to be the dad James needed, I applause 👏🏾. Love and respect to you and James's mom❤
@PamelaScott-jl9ckThank you for sharing your life with James and how proud you are of your boys! Never had much thot if you’ll as I ran into your name now and again. Thot what a waste how you seemed to be taking your gift and throwing it away with vices. Then I saw an article and read about you and your oldest son who has a huge load he carries besides life itself. I am so impressed with your kindness your dedication your sense of wanting to help your goodness and how you’ve changed and can enjoy the time you spend with your son. His first step made me cry and you touched my heart with your pride and reaction to his effort and success at that special moment.
I hope you are able to succeed in your hopes and dreams for a future that your boy can thrive in. Lucky man because you’ll be there for every step. Be safe and be well enjoy the little things and be kind. 😊🍀
