In this video, I discuss the ideal container size for growing pepper plants. The topic is pretty basic, but we get asked this question A LOT, so we thought a video may be helpful to some newer growers.
I have a dumb question - I'm starting out growing for the first time with a 6x4ft lean-to polycarb greenhouse with some cheap racks on the outsides, so space is a premium, currently - Will chilli pots that are narrower and taller be ok? 25.5cm top,16.5cm, 22cm Deep & 7ltr capacity. I have some 30cm 9.5ltr pots but just trying to save some space. Just starting out Serrano, Aji Lemon & Pinapple, Jalapeno M + Buena Malata. Cheers!

I use deli pickle buckets. Two per plant. Upper bucket has holes drilled in the bottom. It is inserted into an intact bucket. However, measure the depth of the insert and drill a 1/4 " hol e in the side to allow excess water to escape. I put drainage rocks in the bottom of the insert bucket then fill with soil and a little fertilizer and pearlite. It has been working for me for years

Why canât you just grow in a 5 gallon bucket? It doesnât taper at all.

What about water use in in each size mostly the grow bag vs pots and even inground? I currently do inground and 5plus gal pots it allows me to water less often. It gets 112ish in the summer

Hello Sir, it is okay to used the size 6 by 6 by 10 inches pod poly bags for the chili peppers such us Banana pepper, Ghost Peppers and Bird eye chili and finger chili?

i have a 4mo season before i have to move pots in and out to avoid freezing. itâll be 60-80 until Nov, but will start freezing at night in Sept. Mountain desert life. My concern is that my habanero is exceptionally small compared to all my other peppers. My thai pepper and serrano are blooming, but the habaneroâŠis only like 2.5x2â and iâm nervous about putting it in a larger pot. The roots arenât even collecting on the side of the starter pot like the others were before transplanting. I bought them all at a local market sale last month and I tried to pick larger ones that looked healthy. Iâve been moving them to 3 gal pots, which sound like theyâll work for my growing season. I guess Iâm off to find a habanero pepper plant video now.

fabric pots are so messy indoors, i recommend air pots for optimal performance. (cheap knockoffs are fine)

@raylear-z7bdepends on the variety and climate, plus what plant size you can manage. Some of them can grow to huge monsters but stay small in 5 gallon pots
@david111daviesI loveee those fabric pots I bought from Bootstraps I bought at least 10 bags of 7 gallons and 10 bags of 2 gallons, I used them for my purple peppers, rose Mary, red bell peppers and I have 5 sun flowers and to be honest I am really happy for Pepper Geek for all the informations about planting using fabrics pots. @sniperfreak223Honestly most hots just taste mild or fruity sweet these days to me and really i kinda miss the burn, sure i am going to ruin my receptors even more when my Carolina Reapers start producing fruit but those things offer so much health benefits it is worth it. Like did you know that a Carolina Reaper had about 84% or around that of Vitamin C in it? Hell it even has so many antioxidants in it such as Lutein and Zeaxanthin not to mention Capsanthin which just about all peppers have but this has way more since it's absurd amount of capsaicin. Like Capsanthin has all sorts of things such as strong antioxidant capacity, it has anti inflammatory -(ironic i know)-, anti tumor, and antidiabetic properties. It also has anti-obesity, anti-adipogenic, and antihyperlipidemic properties while also having skin-photo protective properties. Let's not forget flavonoids most importantly Quercetin which is antioxidants that scavenge free radicals
Top it off with all the Vitamins it has Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, and Vitamin K1 and you can see why it is a good thing to make it a major part of your diet at the cost of building up tolerance to capsaicin
Actually I think this entire plant kills radiation from your body in general and improves your eye health thanks to the Lutein and Zeaxanthin. Honestly if it was not for the burn of capsaicin i think the Carolina Reaper itself would be included as a Super Food not just grouped in with the rest of the pepper species as it is just a overall very healthy fruit. Funny thing is hotter peppers do have more health benefits other than just burning, however a major downside is again you have to build up tolerance to the Capsaicin
Last year I bought a random jalapeño plant from a big box store. We just moved and our garden was badly neglected by the previous owners. That plant grew an insane amount of jalapeños, I would estimate about 200 and the heat levels were all over the place. I gave away so many it was insane. This year I am thinking of doing my peppers in grow bags to see what happens.

@yamakiman7589I planted two different pepper seeds and I didn't mark them. Now I have no clue which one is which XD And I need to choose the pot to replant.
@LayllasLockerI even avoid clay pots in my area because they dry out so fast, I don't think I could keep up with fabric. During peak summer I often resort to putting all of my pots into 5ft kiddy pools and fill them with 3-4 inches of water which gets me 2-3 days depending on how many pots I have packed into each pool.

@megsediblelandscapesAwesome info. I plan on planting 12 pepper plants (Jimmy Nardello and Numex paprika) in five gallon fabric grow bags, trying to get some germination going now mid Feb. in NH. If I have luck and they grow being early I'll try topping them to slow them down until they can go outside. I'm trying 4 seeds or so just to see if I can get them growing and fine tune all that before mid March or so before I'm under the gun. I'm on round two now with no luck and I'm even using a heat mat and humidity dome. they're frustrating for me to get germinated. The growing I'm good at but seeng anything pop up, not so much.
@cowboyblacksmithThis was helpful information! I am partial to fabric grow bags, so this video helping me determine which size bags to use was valuable. I plan to grow cayenne peppers in a couple of different style grow bags as soon as the weather warms up.

@hilda7698I can tell you from experience that those fabric grow bags are fantastic for zucchini and yellow squash. They drain amazingly well so I would imagine they'd be great for peppers that require good drainage.
@davemiller8203Can I use a small 1 gallon container throughout the winter and then plant in the ground without issue or will it be stunted?
