02:40 Step 3: Assessment training

03:37 Step 4: Assess your time

Im start training for endurance since last 1-2 month. Basically all i do is 3 running session include 2 easy and 1 tempo or long run or interval. 1 swim session 45-60 minute for pushing my aerobic base more i can get 500-800m in 1 session. And 2 strength session using classic 5x5 SBD and 1 rest day. My ultimate goal of course ironman or any extreme triathlon but it is still long way to go maybe in 4-5 year. My closest goal is next year finish half marathon and full marathon and saving for buy a road bike for my cycling cause now i dont have any.

04:44 Step 5: Plan your week

06:11 Step 6: Build volume

Friends of mine doing a triathlon on August 9, also for me in 84 days. Im completely a beginner right now. I was in top form nearly my whole life but working long hours until 8 pm stressed me out. For the olympic distance i could do 10km run and 40km bike with ease, but swimming 1,5km is so hard for me. Cant breath and i am so exhausted because im not a swimmer. Any tips? How i can get fast into swimming?

β€” @linuspl.219

07:09 Step 7: Add intensity

08:49 Step 8: Plan recovery

How is it differ between 3 weeks recovery & 2 weeks taper before the event day? Isn’t taper week is where one recover or go easy?

09:44 Step 9: Stop planning, start doing!

10:25 Step 10: Race. Win.

It’s been 10 years since I got into triathlon, and this October I’ll be participating in Ironman Kona! Great insights in this video, I still have a lot to learn when it comes to executing a training plan :)

GTN Training Plans πŸ‘‰ https://gtn.io/qonrQw

This plan is like expectations:
Then there is reality: starting too hard,
injuries after 4 weeks,
recovery for 1 month,
back to the start,
you go easy now but injuries are back,
recovery 1 month, back to start,
now you understand you need to do mobility and strength training before running,
you start some exercises but you doing them wrong and it gets worse,
you go to physio,
you doing recovery for 1 month and proper exercises,
now you can go to do your plan πŸ˜‚
x3 because you are doing 3 sports at once
My point is, if you just got up from sofa and want to do 2 swims, 2 runs, 2 bikes a week, you will be exhausted after 2 weeks, maybe 3 if you are tuff. Try to go for a 1h walk and 30m stretching every day and check out if you are feeling good after a week.
Body must adapt to new activities, and it takes long time for tendons and muscles to get used to it, no matter how hard you work on it. It just take time.

I'm looking to do a Half Ironman early September and have no experience with triathlons but have run 3 marathons and now run 5-6 miles a couple times a week. I've done some general training on bikes with longest distance 30 miles once about a month ago but can do 20 miles fairly easy now. I have swam in the past for over a mile at a time but that was 3-4 years ago and I haven't done any swimming in the past 2 years. I'm wondering if it is feasible for me to train and complete a half iron man in about 12 weeks training time given current fitness if I create a training plan? Not looking to win or anything just finish the race.

Great video, but I have a question. If we want to put some strength training let's say 2 days in a week, what days should we add these strength workouts? The same day with the long bike or interval days? If i put it on my interval day, I feel like I will blow up. What do you think about it, my concern is not to have recovery well.

Great video, I’ve done 8 x long distance and 11 x 70.3 distance races so you’d think I’d know what I was doing by now but this was still a good refresher on how to plan, especially the idea of a 3 week plan instead of a 7 day one.
Thanks 😊

@SamThompson-zy5iw

This will be the first time attempting to really stick to an established training plan for my goals. I have two major targets:
- Sub 3 hour half-marathon in May
- Sub 8 hour half-Ironman in December

I’m the type of person who could really do well to follow Step 9. It’s easy for me to spend way too much time planning every detail, only to revise everything again the next week. It ends up wasting a lot of time and mental energy, so hopefully I can avoid that trap this time.

I've just come off of base training, completed a 25K trail race and am now preparing for triathlon season. I work 60ish hours per week, but I have a small gym at work which I can utilize on weekends or after hours. My off days are Sunday and Monday. I'm 62.

Sunday

AM: 1 hr group stationary bike class (very intense)/1.5 mile run to and back from gym (9:30/mile)

PM: 1600 meter steady swim (1:45/100)

Monday

AM: 10 mile steady run (10:30/mile)

PM: 400 meter x 8 tempo swim (1:35/100)

Tuesday

AM: 3 mile recovery run (12 min/mile)

Wednesday

AM: 2 mile warm up run (10:30/mile) 400 meter x 6 (7:30/mile) w/90 sec's recovery (walk)

PM: 1 hr strength and conditioning (plyo and calisthenics)

Thursday

AM: 1 mile warm up run (10:30/mile) 3 mile tempo run (8:30/mile) 1 mile cool down run (10:30/mile)

PM: Interval swim 200 meter (1:45/100) + 100 meter x8 (1:25/100) on 2 [repeat x3] + 200 meter cool down (1:45/100)

Friday

Rest

Saturday

AM: 3 hr steady bike (18 mph)

PM: 1 hr strength and conditioning (heavy weighted resistance exercise)

I follow this schedule for 3 weeks then I have a cut week on the 4th where I reduce volume by 40-60%. I then reassess and make modifications to pace or volume as needed. This year I will have a sprint or olympic triathlon race every month from May through October. I modify my training schedule around my races as needed. Most of my races I look at as another training event.

Last year I averaged 1:30/100 on the swim, 24 mph on the bike and 8 minutes per mile on the run. I competed in Sprint Triathlons with ocean swims and flat courses (I'm in Florida). I've signed up for a couple of olympic distance races this year in TN and OH (visiting family) and I expect the bike courses to be challenging as they both have rolling hills.

I'm aiming for 70.3 Ironman Panama City next year!

My struggle has always been to set up a training plan. I am an older age group athlete. My big race is the worlds in Spain this year. (go Team Canada) but I do have other races before. I do have a wee bit of a schedule. 3 swims a week (I hired a coach) try to run 20 KMs a week and I do 4 hours of bike. I do interchange intervals and long zone 2 runs. But it is set up of "well what should I tackle today" It is not focused but I get it all done in one week. Thanks James and GTN. I'll try and align this a little better.
