It’s been a few years since I last crossed the US/Canada border by car, and back then, the process was smooth and straightforward. In 2025, the general process hasn’t changed much, but my experience was different this time.
Due to something on my record, I was referred to immigration for some additional questioning and a car search by border patrol. In this video, I share what happened, how long it took, and what you might expect when crossing the US-Canada border in 2025.

I have been hesitant on going over to Canada because of everything that’s been going on my main concern is that I won’t be welcome because I’m American.

@syritabenson9300Was the issue a criminal record if I may ask? Did you have to bring documentation of what happened? Or did they iust see in their computers and let you go? Did you get any paperwork for deemed rehabilitation?
@MrPhchelloEverything changed after 9/11. I was randomly searched, patted down, and had to go inside for a sit-down interview where CBP went through my wallet and iPhone and asked a ton of questions. After these two incidents more than 10 years ago, I got my Nexus card. No problems crossing the border since then by car, motorcycle, and plane.

@CashMacGregorBorders can be next level. I once spoke to an older Canadian man in his 60's that was denied by US border officers. He said he failed to mention to the officer about a crime he committed in his 20's. The crime? He stole some lipstick for his then girlfriend, now wife, when they were on a date. He didn't mention it because it was so long ago that he forgot.
I didn't want to keep asking questions because he was clearly stressed out about missing his flight. But I bet he got banned for a few years. To avoid any confusion about what I just said, there are US pre-clearance stations at all major Canadian airports.

It would be my first time driving into Canada in a few days, is there usually a long wait or traffic to see an officer and how long does it take when they ask you questions? I am going to see the falls and coming back in 2 days. Do I need to also go through immigration? I have never been in trouble with the law or anything just a tourist visiting from America.
@Rubynyc28If you have a Criminal Record, you can't enter Canada. This includes DUIs. If, after 10 years or more, there's nothing else, you're permitted. OR...you can go to the local Canadian Consulate and apply for an Entry Waiver.
@airborne63Is the incident you're referring to a DUI? I hear they're pretty strict about that in canada.
