Child in time is a protest song against the Vietnam War! In the 1970s and 1980s, Child in time was considered the unofficial anthem of the Eastern European freedom and resistance movement! One of the best rock songs of all the time!!! Greetings from Austria!

That was Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar. Where did this place Deep Purple at the time? It placed them shoulder-to-shoulder with the heavy greats of the time. With artistic bands like Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Moody Blues, Pink Floyd, and so many more. They were pioneering in prog-rock at the time. I know. I was there. I was a young 19 year-old GI in 1972.

This was from a Granada TV series called 'Doing Their Thing' where up and coming bands were given national TV air time they normally would never get. It's difficult to explain that back in the day we were less interested in "genre".. we were more interested in the music the band or solo artist played. That was the important part for my generation. Led Zep, Black Sabbath, Deep Purple etc, played the same kind of music but at the same time each group was its own thing. So todays adherence to genres tends to limit the music you might listen to I think, especially if your listening method is playlist based.
As for "was this a one off kind of live performance"... well no, every time they played it live it was this good.

The Music Industry decides a lot more than it should. Deep Purple went through many lineup changes. There's the late-60s Deep Purple, the early-70s Deep Purple, and then the aftermath Deep Purple. You can't simply point to one or even four guys and say, "That's Deep Purple." Try to find Rod Evans today. Go ahead. I love their music, but Deep Purple definitely fell into the pettiness of the music industry while writing some of the most iconic guitar riffs, lyrics, and songs of all time. Richie Blackmore is one of the most iconic lead guitar players of all time, and real guitar players will point to his solos as the bar...the bar. They delved back into Johann Sebastian Bach and brought Baroque Music back into the present through the lens of a hard rock band. And since you mentioned critics, it's important to know that most critics are not critics; they are gatekeepers trying to influence others' opinions on everything, with little room for other opinions or styles beyond what they declare the best.

Ian Gillian Singing Gethsemane is a gem. He was the voice of Jesus in the Original Jesus Christ Superstar recording. He nailed it.

It is said that God created the world perfect, and we are all the offspring of a Creator. We have co-creative powers over our reality. The reason the world looks imperfect is our perception of it which creates ( for us) this world we become angry about (firing bullets) which we as a whole have to deal with.
The miracle happens when perception is healed.

Ian Gillan is one of the most versatile vocalist of the musical era. Having been the original " Jesus Christ Superstar", and even sharing the stage with operatic legends such as Pavoratti, his talent knows no bounds. Deep Purple,with Ian Gillan as lead vocalist,is still putting out new music and albums. " Splat" their latest,was just released within the past several days. Their entire repotoure and catlolog is definitely worth a journey down the rabbit hole.

Although not as consistent as Sabbath or Zeppelin, Purple had a huge impact on hard rock.

You sould react to some King Crimson. Trust me. 21st century shizoid man, in the court of the crimson king, epitaph(The Albumversion), starless, i talk to the wind, Frame by Frame, Larks' n Tongues in Aspic, Fallen Angel, moonchild. Some suggestions.

Edit: They are the pioneers of progressive rock and influenced people like Danny Carey from Tool. He also played with them on their tour.

In the very early seventies (1970 - 1972) the UK "Hard Rock" scene was dominated by three bands, Black Sabbath; Deep Purple and Uriah Heep. Please note that a) these are not in any specific order and b) I have specified "HARD ROCK" not rock or blues. I lived these times and they have carried through the ups & downs of my life.

Saw them in 1973 they were unbelivable this song was one of the highlights the night .
The opening band was Rory Gallagher he was unbelivable.

Hey BP,the bands back then had the social messages that they really don't have today because they were experiencing war and all that. The majority of people didn't sign up for Vietnam. Not like today when you have a choice. Do you really think that the youth of today would be as laid-back and as judgmental as they are today if they had to keep a 2.0 GPA or have a very good chance of going to the jungle for a government that was going to pick them around for political reasons.

This is an awesome tune. "unhinged" is accurate, but one note later, they're very controlled again.... IMO this is their best song, but they have a lot of very good songs. (also love "Smoke on the Water", a song that describes the burning of a Casino during the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, where they gave a concert. You certainly heard the iconic Guitar riff before... ;)

Have You ever heard of Dire Straits? They're ... how could I explain... less psychodelic, more music-focused.
My favorite Band. Maybe You should try them, I'd suggest start with "Telegraph Road" and then "Sultans of Swing", both the Live version, from the "Alchemy Live" concert.

Not sure if it was mentioned, but Ian Gillan sang on Black Sabbath's Born Again album. Not the best Sabbath album but it was the first Sabbath album I bought as a teenager. Born Again got me into both bands much deeper than I had pripr. Anyway, this song is soooooo good. Thanks for doing it.

RIP to Bonnie Tylar passed away last night in a hospital in Potugal at the age of 75. Singer of Tital Eclipse Of The Heart, I Need A Hero and many others. She will be missed.
