This applies to marriage too.
I know this family that it's only what their mother says they do and they are all married so you can imagine how trashy they treat their spouses that have become their own family. I call it witchcraft.
Honestly the sooner some of us learn our parents are navigating through life just like we are, figuring it out as we go, the better.
They aren't useless either cause you can always seek wise counsel from them but we need our own wisdom to decipher if their counsel is really really wise.

My siblings and I went through the same thing. Now that I'm older I realise that we went through physical, emotional, mental and belive it or not spiritual abuse. It took years of suffering to break out of the mental programming. But the resentment is true. Sad but true.

I was born and raised in a Nigerian household too. I also rebelled. Because the reason behind the beatings were extremely minuscule. Once I turned into a teenager, I got fed up and started to defend myself. Now suddenly I am a bad child. In my case, I don’t see the wisdom of my parents at all. They didn’t teach me anything but how to be negative and trauma. They have their children struggling in the real world with no resources. I don’t have any regard for them. Some parents are bad and don’t deserve any regard.

There's a lot of wisdom in this. The Nigerian society is extremely gerontocratic - one in which the old is always right, is never wrong, never apologizes to the younger, and refuses accountability.

This has caused a lot of damage in individuals and society at large. If left unchecked, the average Nigerian parent does not know when to let go of the reins and trust their child to make wise decisions.

The rule I have learned is this, your parents cannot mentor you beyond their highest level of growth. If your parents had a Bachelors, and you now have a Masters or PhD, there's a strong likelihood that all the advice you get from your parents will not match your current reality, and you make need to employ some of their wisdom, and the new knowledge you have learned. If you parents never left the village, or your small town, and you are now based in Canada, this is even worse, for they don't understand your realities and all their advice will be based on the world they have known. So you have to wise up, learn when to take charge of your own life, understand their intent, good parents always have the right intention, so understand their intent, and use your knowledge and exposure to make the wisest decisions in your time and location.

Listen for advice but make your own decisions by judging whether that advice is sound.

What's honour? When you say 'respect' or 'disrespect', what does that mean?
Parents are also told by scripture to not disrespect and dishonor their children.

Do you realize the bible commands fathers never to provoke their children to wrath?

There is narcissism being practiced by Nigerian parents towards their children and this is an evil thing.

Never submit to it. If you let your parents steal your adulthood, its gone and you won't get those years. They enjoyed theirs and they are trying to steal yours while claiming its love. They are lying.
Being an adult is having autonomy as regards your future aspirations. You cannot be an adult and a child at the same time. Politely put your foot down and absolutly refuse to be parented. They had their chance to parent you when you were a child. If they didn't do it, that time is past and that window is closed. Even if they are contributing to financially supporting you, they have no right to use tension and duress and threats to take from you what is not theirs(your life). Its robbery.
SAY NO!

With A.I. you can learn strategies to out maneuver their tactics.

Parents are toxic, especially to female children. After 20, it’s best to find your own path .

Listen to your parents but don't be controlled by them. Remember, you have to live your life.
