Perhaps amore realistic idea is that as indigenous people could quite likely have had pets at different times from young animals after the parents were killed. That a pup or puppies initially could have been taken in. Did one of those dogs being female roam and became pregnant and gave birth to another litter in the village.
Then one of those puppies could do the same . Wild dogs might have roamed close to human habitation following nomadic people and picking up the scraps from the camp so there would always be other mates around .
But the ones that were born in the village would become quiet and probably happily go between the village and the wilds .
Repeat this and you get genetic diversity.
Of course humans finding them to be a fabulous pet decided to continue with the relationship.

@TimShepherd-yr8woI would suggest that the first wolves to be human companions were the red wolves of NE Africa. African village dogs have the most genetic variation of all dogs... and there are variants in modern dogs that appear to be common in that red wolf, which is now endangered and found mainly in Ethiopia. That could mean that wolf-dogs accompanied anatomically modern humans as they expanded out of Africa... 70,000 - 140,000 years ago!!!

@AkosGalfiLe loup ne s'est pas transformé en chien, le loup et le chien actuel ont simplement un ancêtre commun, très proche puisqu'ils sont compatibles sexuellement, mais le loup actuel est tout autant différent de l'ancêtre primordial que le chien, aussi bien le berger turc que le chihuahua.

@河村正-n3jI can definitely imagine a scenario where wolves essentially domesticated themselves.
I can imagine this playing out over many generations, where each litter produced by a mother wolf would see a certain percentage of offspring going into the wild, leaving only those who were most comfortable with humans remaining. Over time, generation after generation, the most fit for life with men would remain.
Cried multiple times watching this. Still cant forget my first dog. She was agressive and angry often, but still loved us with her whole small heart.
