Doom: The Dark Ages Review

I was glad when the game was over. It became repetitive. Enter room, get locked in, kill heaps of demons, rinse-repeat. A couple of puzzles and secrets to keep you engaged, and thats it. Time for Id to focus on Quake and give Doom a rest.

Possibly the best game I've played all year. The parry is very forgiving though still gets difficult towards end.

Eternal was certainly too hard for my taste.

Im not into expert timing as being the must have skill to complete a game.

The frequent platform puzzles was too much for me.

I just finished the game. One of the best games I have ever played in my life. Runs good, looks amazing, and has a good story. A MUST BUY GAME !!!!!!!!

I just replayed Doom Eternal after playing Dark Ages. I think Eternal is the best one but there were moments I found myself missing that shield. Dark Ages is the second best Doom game.

Damn, I have to say I wasn’t expecting to stay for the whole review but this was a great review and a great interview at the end. Props to IGN for getting someone who clearly cares a lot about the franchise to review the latest entry. Also props to Tom for asking about the style of the game vs eternal and 2016, that’s actually exactly what I came hear to find out lol

11:26 dunno if it’s a hot take but I actually found the soundtrack so boring and lacking usually that I didn’t even notice the music. 2016 especially was so fast loud and just badass metal and this games music is more like a heavily sedated sorta metal band playing music to put metalheads to sleep. Slow as hell and very very boring. Sometimes it still fits but usually it’s just something to play in the background so there’s at least something playing.

His comparison at the end between Doom post-2016 and Bayonetta/Devil May Cry is spot on. I've just finished playing Eternal (loved it); it felt less like a FPS and more like an action hack 'n' slash. Doom seems to have remembered what many other developers and franchises have forgotten lately (looking at RDR2 here): that games are supposed to fun.

This game is fucking diabolical.

I spent tens of thousands of hours playing Doom in the 90s...made levels, played whole discs of other custom levels, played multiplayer on dialup BBSs, I freaking love that game.

Great review, I completely agree. I have played every Doom since the beginning, this is a great game with some cool tweaks. Playing as a DPS Tank is so much fun!

I bought the Premium Edition game today. I hope I don't regret it. I might not play it until they announce the DLC though.

Disagree on Doom Eternal.
It lost what doom was, a dark action shooter with light puzzle elements. And leaned too heavily into Mirror's Edge style platforming and acrobatics, and an overly colorful presentation. Climbing and jumping on Mario-style floating platforms, in a candy-coated world. Between one generic, multiplayer style fighting arena, after the next.. It was a step down from Doom 2016 IMHO, never even finished it.
The fact that they abandonded that first person platforming focus, and went back to a more grounded Doom Guy, has me more interested in Dark Ages.

Which controller is best suited for it on PC ?

This reviewer isn't an IGN material, he's far beyond the doom that is the IGN.

Doom games are way overrated imo storyline sucks no replay value or depth just run and shoot yeah its fun for an hr or two but gets bored quick 6 out of 10 for me

Loved 2016 hated the eternal fighting gun loop glad they switched it up from use this gun on this demon clear weakspot it felt like u have to play a single way or nothing 2016 u could use every gun or just like your 2 favorites I want to feel badass not my guns have a quarter ammo they should to make u switch

I've played for an hour & I love the vibe, poops all over eternal.

The music in Doom: Dark Ages is the worst in the franchise. It is evident the reviewer didnt play the game fully.

After playing all 3 2016 is still my favorite

i would get this but it looks way to easy coming from doome eternal i play that on hardest difficulty so this is gonna be way to easy for me

I think that this game was rated too highly. I would have rated it as a 7. The music and visuals are fantastic, but the gameplay and level design is very outdated. This game should be a roguelike with all of the weapons and choices that are available

God damn I wish these studio would stop catering to new players, the last few years all I hear is “they toned down the difficulty to make it more approachable”.
