Elon Musk's 'big bet' IPO contains 'red flags' for the AI economy | Greg Williams

Video Overview & Insights

The unprecedented size of Elon Musk's one of a kind SpaceX IPO should have investors and governments wary of the impact on global markets, says Greg Williams Chair of The Venture Group and Former Editor-in-Chief of WIRED.

Did...did he just say, "A sense of froth"? Did he just euphemize the word "bubble"?

The vibes should be SCREAMING at you to run in the other direction. X AI lost 2 BILLION DOLLARS this year alone (and the year isn't even over yet). Starship is a pipe dream of unproven technology that hasn't even launched yet. The only profitable part of Space X is the starlink network, but even that is heavily propped up by US Government contracts that Musk shouldn't have got (or could lose in the next administration).

Wanting to go public just so you can take on more debt, is a scam and a disaster waiting to happen. Come off it Greg, if this was any other company you wouldn't be trying to push it.

People are over analyzing this IPO. It has so much media hype, ordinary people are in a state Fear of Missing Out. It doesn't matter how well the company did in the past or will do in the future. The only thing that matters is the potential huge demand which will drive up the price of the stock. 😢

It doesn't matter at all. Everything is such a rigged scam these days; i'm sick of it.

Retail investors are irrelevant. The rules are waived to force the IPO onto the indices and then institutional investing will complete the wealth transfer coup of the century (thus far). Rinse and repeat. Thank you sir may I have another stick up my ass

This was about Musk getting in first.
Investors have a certain % of their portfolio allocated to tech and specifically AI. Musk’s hodgepodge of products has been created to get that money, despite his offering being substandard compared to OpenAI and Anthropic.

It’s about getting investors money, not AI. The terrifying part is that this lousy product is over subscribed by 4x.

I suspect it will crash the stock market and Musks vapour wear AI company will destroy people’s pensions.

Wtf is he on about? Starlink is a breakeven business at best. It’s services mediocre one step up from dial up speed and it has no potential growth of customer base.

@Mike6789-rl8ly
@

Starlink is maybe profitable depending on how the costs of launching satellites is laundered through the rest of SpaceX. Can it be profitable if starship doesn't become a rapidly reusable launch system? Nope.

This guest suuuuuuuucks. Seriously if he believes this is a ā€œvibeā€ thing that depends on OUR PERSONAL FEELINGS ABOUT WHETHER OR NOT WE TRUST MUSK, then he discloses he has his own high hopes for AI…like does he need a cigarette after completely blowing his credibility? + some fluffing on the side.Ā
SAY THE TRUTH PLAINLY: what is it OTHER THAN UNWISE SPECULATION &/OR FRAUD if it literally depends on ā€œvibesā€ & our personal trust in ONE fkg billionaire? What else could it be other than unwise speculation &/or fraud? WHAT ELSE COULD ā€œVIBES + PERSONALITY = INVESTMENTā€ EVEN MEAN????Ā
YOU ARE A GROWN MAN DISCUSSING BILLION DOLLAR INVESTMENTS ON VIBES. If you cannot recognize the truth staring you in the face you need to change industries or at least state your prejudice, this is not journalism. This is not analysis. This is not credible.
To TTR: Please warn me & stop wasting my time with these lightweights. Skip an episode if you can’t find credible people. jfc this is enraging. ā€œAbetters + Fluffers of delusionā€ like this guest have a role in why the world is messed up. WTAF is he ON HERE OFFERING OPINIONS AS ā€œEXPERTISEā€? Ed Zitron is the only person keeping you credible. I should know by now you get lazy stock boosters I can’t trust otherwise. This seems like an overreaction if you don’t know how many times I have given you a chance bc of the credibility Zitron lends you. I mean at this point you should be making all your guests & journalists disclose their entire financial portfolio bc I have a feeling Mr Vibes Snake McGee here is hunting for some bigger fools. You are retroactively making me trust a journalist I’ve followed for years, that’s how iffy this is. Your program lacks so much credibility with gobsh1te like this I even want Zitron’s financial disclosures after this untrustworthy mess.
WHAT EVEN IS YOUR MISSION STATEMENT?Ā
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN?Ā
ANYTHING? ANY BELIEFS?
IS THIS CHANNEL/ORGANIZATION AT WAR WITH ITSELF? I know there are decent journalists here, if you are being hampered, QUIT, Bc I have news for you — it is SHOWING. You are NOT MASKING IT. So you may as well drag the war in the open & quit before your credibility is ruined by these dips. You can do better. I had to waitress for 18 months after I quit advertising. Get some dignity & listen to your moral compass. Whatever this is giving you is not enough to take this guest seriously & pretend he has real things to say.

It's the 'dominance' trap 20:22 and China is only a few months behind ?

I think China's right in the sweet spot if it draws that high of percentage (80%) of non-Chinese AI companies.

That is the case if you are treating this particular tech play as a business and not a ketamine party.

@richardrestall8592
@

Look at how well Musk managed to destroy the US by gutting vital functions while burning even more $ than before. Now we have: Hantavirus, Ebola, Measles, and Screworm wreaking havoc and nobody to do anything. That’s the ketamine inspired leadership to look forward to at SpaceX.

They’re pitching an identifiable market that doesn’t exist. Exclude China, their allies, the parts of Europe that have broken from the US AI reliance (India uses free tiers). When you strip back the market that is actually available and then the projected revenue, Goldmans are essentially saying SpaceX is going to have 75% of it which is basically a joke/arguably a fraudulent misrepresentation.

That’s not to say the ipo won’t be successful initially. It will, up to the second earnings release as a public company at which point the indexes will have bought what they need, Anthropic will be floating so there will be selling pressure to reallocate elsewhere, and the bulk of withheld shares are released. That is point that pump ends and dump begins. You need to understand the releases to understand how this will trade.

@CertifriedGenius

It's funny how many people I keep hearing who are planning on flipping SpaceX. The greater fool theory comes to mind.

If there is government corruption connected to Musk, I sincerely hope that we can call it "Elongate".

Air BnB and Uber are not normal businesses. They are regulatory arbitrage businesses. They circumvent regulations that have grown up to protect people and healthy markets. It's true that, where I live, they regulated taxi operators have been notoriously rubbish for well over fifty years and I'm glad to see them suffer, but in general I think these businesses are like out-of-town supermarkets, actually causing more harm than good and only profiting people who are barely on the right side of the law.

@past-programmer

No, I do not believe in Elon, but šŸ‘©ā€šŸŽ¤do you believe in life after love?šŸŽ¶

@jimmyjamminslammin

B/S on the Space X successful.
The part that makes some money is walled off from Space Karen's reach by the US Govt for national interest.
Star Link is profitable but faces market saturation.
The remaining parts is losing $$$$ hand over fist is the one Space Karen is leading to disaster just like the losing AI Side.
I have NO trust in anything the host says.

@zDToddy

Since Elon Musk’s weird ā€œbusiness planā€ involved some truly science fiction stuff such as data centres in space, reusable rockets that don’t need those pesky inspections and AI models of an inhabited moon, it’s a bad risk. Elon is not grounded in reality.

The truth is, no matter how bad the economy gets, most of us need to strive for great ideas and also make decisions on how to survive and become successful, although not all of us were financially literate early enough to understand this. For me I was 40 when I finally educated myself and started taking steps on how to better my life, I went from $120,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to now, 2 years later, fully debt-free and with over $895,000 net worth. It may not SOUND like a lot, but I'm so proud of myself for it. Now I'm fast-tracking my wealth building (investing $100,000 annually) with no debts at all. It's a good feeling! Hopefully I will retire soon and purchase another new house for my retirement.

If the U.S. had a functioning SEC Elon Musk would be on trial or already in prison. Anyone who buys into this voluntarily is an idiot, period. He’s promised Mars and the Moon since 2014 but can’t even deliver a Roadster.
