Food Addiction: Craving the Truth About Food | Andrew Becker | TEDxUWGreenBay
Video Overview & Insights
Andrew Becker discusses how the current food environment of today motivates us to consume until we are obese. We are evolutionarily primed to thrive in a food scarce environment with natural foods, but now face an endless supply of processed junk food that has the power to cause addiction.

Andrew Becker is from the small town of Slinger Wisconsin, and completed his bachelor’s degree in human biology with an emphasis in dietetics from the University of Wisconsin Green Bay. Currently, he is completing his Ph.D. in biochemistry in Dr. Jong-In Park's lab at the Medical College of Wisconsin. The focus of his research is to investigate how certain types of cancers utilize the ERK1/2 signaling pathway to promote their proliferation. Along with his research, Andrew has an immense passion for nutrition. He believes it is important for everyone to understand how the foods they eat affect their health. He has made it a life-long goal to continuously teach the public about nutritional health whenever he gets the opportunity. Most annoying is listening to a skinny person who has never suffered with any kind of addiction.
@CanadaSuburbSometimes it's not about self control issues, it's about trauma
@lostsoul4021Does anybody else feel like they cannot reduce the amount of these foods? Much like an alcoholic I cannot do moderation. I can abstain pretty comfortably after the initial withdrawal but as soon as I think “I’ll just give myself a treat” I end up binging. I literally CANNOT do moderation. At all.
@shonaodonnell4848Can anyone drop his insta/ linkedIn profile???
@hasibayasmeen8208Quit 12 april 2026 RIP FOR MY FOOD ADDICTION forever
FI AMANILLAAAH🕋🤲.
I am totally addicted to food. I have to eat every day to stay alivr.
@martinvaneck-ss1mnFood addiction is not only related to processed food or sugary food. I'm addicted to fresh home made food like vegetables, cheese, eggs, bread, legumes and rice. I eat in small amounts but all day long. If I were kidnapped and locked away with very little food for a few weeks, I'll suffer craving for the healthy food more than worrying about the kidnapping I feel. Ozempic seems to be the only solution.
@DontLie-y1sStress always makes me hungry. When i am calm i don't need that much food. Cortisol makwa you think you're in fight or flight mode and you need more energy when it's mental not physical 😢

@JordynLevasseur-k5w4lThey would never change our food environment unless they were financially rewarded to do so.
@whoisthispianist194pfft healthy food stinks
@plutofffdddI disagree with the whole addiction philosophy. I believe that addiction is nothing more than doing something that we enjoy. Whether it's drugs or food, we like it so much that we want to keep doing it even when we know, in the long run, it may harm us. That's it. Plain and simple. The food doesn't cause us to be addicted just like the drugs don't cause us to be addicted. We cause ourselves to be addicted because we like it so much.😊
@bentriderI'm living in a big city in Japan, and what's difficult here is that I can find convenience stores in every STREET. They sell affordable snacks (but they're expensive because I buy everyday for months due to its addictive). I am fighting to reduce eating the snacks.
@yukihayasaka-j6cThank you andrew❤
@sebastiannikitsin7879I'm just realizing having a food addiction is real
@2wheeltony889Dr. Joan Ifland''s Food Addiction Reset Community saved my life.
@hggirlEating away the secret, eating the truth away!!!!
@JesseCotton-c9eListened to this as I passed my favorite fastfood restaurant because I have been trying to quit but it feels impossible. This video helped me overcome the urges though, at least for this time
@North-DMaybe if we said a prayer before we eat we won't get addicted.
@Medea007I've been eating frozen meals from a company called Kevin's. I buy them at sprouts.
@cheers2023On 5/9/25, I ended my food addiction. From this day forward, I will not live to eat — I will eat to live. A new and joyful life begins, in the name of God.

Have there been any improvements in our available foods? NOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Our government, NIH, big pharma, they all get rich on us being sick and unhealthy. Even our health care and doctors don’t make money if we are healthy.
@lorilandwehr803I'm watching while having chips
@DaryaTakhtaee-x9gYou had me until you started talking about the theory of evolution. Which, may I remind you, IS a theory, not a proven fact. They tried desperately to prove it, but can't. That one ignorance nullifies everything else you say.
@grace_amazing1972Ozempic takes away our need for control.. yeah
@Scoville3440You are dreaming that the food giants are going to take a leadership role to do this as money and greed beats health everyday to them. Only the wealthy will have access to such advances.
@ericawilder8531They put sugar in everything.
@kikidee857Some people never get addicted to food or anything else. My mother in law was like this. She could take a bite of one peanut butter cup and be completely satisfied. She was the same weight her whole
life and ate very little. She just didn’t care to eat overall. She never overate, not pasta, cakes, cookies, candy…anything…until she developed dementia. Once she developed dementia, she couldn’t get enough high calories high sugar foods! She still never gained weight even consuming them in large quantities. I always thought her brain made her eat more because it was dying and trying to get more energy through high caloric foods.
Processed food = drugs.
So taking less or taking "improved" processed food wil not help. Because you can't tell a drug addict to take a little bit of coke. It has to stop 100%.
We need Bright Lines. Bright Line Eating is a lifestyle that works, eating no flour, no sugar, 3 meals a day, a specific amount.
Popcorn is a guilty pleasure if mine. I love sweets, fats, carbs, all of that. Popcorn however is an obsession.
@mr.lad-detailingtricksntipThis is a poor solution. Give us personal methods we can implement. Ain't no one going to improve the food environment at the cost of profits. Did they stop selling cigarettes?
@smallperk7822Watching this while eating a whole box of pizza to myself.
@entp3698We need rehab facilities for food addicted people
@laniesomething3574I am able to say no to eating out like 9 out of 10 times literally I can say no.
@Mr-Slayer-SirHe’s so delicious looking I wasn’t even thinking about food 😆
@DimachkaSSomeone get my man some water 💦🚰
@j.t.o.y2512I’m not obese or overweight, but I can’t stop thinking about food. When I get home, I go straight to my kitchen. I don’t have a good relationship with money as well. I’m always drinking coffee. And today I was just about to buy food at my work cafeteria after work and my colleagues were just there to buy coffee. One of them asked me why don’t I just go home and eat. My embarrassed self answered it takes long time to commute to home and I was so hungry. I don’t know how to describe this feeling, but I’m just so embarrassed other people can now see it too. I want to cry. I want to fix this.
@LovediaryhbObesity is just a symptom of a sick society .
@SGH-rt6ciExcellent talk. So true but is so hard to quit.
@gustpots4583“I don’t the solution to obesity will be in the form of a pill”
Ozempic has entered the chat
"I don't think the solution of obesity is going to be in the form of a pill or procedure" he technically wasn't wrong, it's an injection 😭
@lunadelrey3333We gained 100 lbs after becoming vegetarians. How? The meat, dairy replacements are loaded with salt, sugar, oils and highly processed. 😢😮
@hchayes9431avoid All processed food forever, & exercise heaps. end of.
@peanut1001xAfter a long day of work, would you rather spend an hour making a healthy delicious meal only to spend 5 minutes eating it and having to spend another 20 minutes cleaning up, or would you rather spend 30 minutes bundled up in a blanked on the couch watching Netflix with a pack of double-stuffed Oreos?
@guppygb6078Is why they say , a healty client is a lost costumer ! ....they want you sick for more money from you ! So they keep us poised
@l.v.k9000Not me searching "how to make a chicken filet taste like McDonald's" while watching this
@SeaGlassAndKissThe main focus of the food industry is for profit and is for you to be addicted to their products. There is no way the government can intervene much, but as an individual we can work on ourselves to get rid of those junk foods.
