easy to say when you won the lottery 4 times over. These kids grew up White, Christian/jewish, living in America in the 21st century. To be a minority with nothing and holding down a full time job because you have no support is a terribly hard task. And to navigate the new system is a dream not reality.

The reason, ultimately, it's smart to go to college even if you don't know what you want to do is that you don't really get a do-over with the 18-25 period of your life. Once that period is gone, it's gone. And then you're in the real world with real responsibilities and relationships.

Yes, in a sense, the value of a 4-year college bachelor’s degree has lost some value. But that’s because a bachelor’s degree today is the equivalent of what high school diploma was 30-40 years ago. The answer is more education - to really stand out today in the job market you need an advanced degree like a masters, professional doctorate or even a PhD.

Its about what to take in College. Invest in trades and STEM fields. If you are taking an arts degree, or sociology, criminology, psychology, which r all 4 year degrees, you will waste money. You wont get far with it.

Trades? I'm in the trades. This whole thing about trades earning more than a degree is BS.
An engineer fresh out of school literally earns more than me.

People who say degree doesn't matter are looking to lower the bar and pay people less.
My advice : go study something useful. The trades hype will evaporate eventually because flooding the market craters the wages.

I've been in good old US manufacturing since leaving the Army in 2014. I was fortunate to be given opportunities as a supervisor largely because I had my degree and leadership experience. One company I worked for had a guy with no degree who was also a supervisor. He made supervisor after being an hourly associate for 10 years and was paid considerably less than me. I'm not hating. College isn't for everyone. But when comparing two people for the same position, in terms of tiebreakers, education wins.

this is insanely out of touch. The most people i know that didnt go to a university went to trade school, which is still school. The people that didn't, are now going to school. And yeah trade school gives you back bending work, all my trade buddies are depressed, exhausted, or hate the world.

Destiny is right about the trades. They don’t pay nearly enough for the damage your body takes. The guys I worked with mostly smoked and overall was a very unhealthy lifestyle.

I know this is a year later, but I just found this video. I have a degree in Computer Engineering and work(ed) with a lot of those people who did the coding boot camp. Those jobs are very volatile. They are the first jobs to be outsourced and now they are the first jobs that are being replaced by AI. If you get a CE or CS degree, you learn more than just how to code. Coding is easy. Making efficient, stable, and secure solutions to problems is why a degree is more valuable. Those boot campers who are still around after 5 years are the handful that have promoted.

I have a low income job at a bakery. I get paid 2K a month. Someone who just got out of College is applying for a job at the bakery where I am working at. Don't waste your time with College if you do not want a high paying job. I want to get a high paying job so I am going to save up money or get a second job so I can save up money to study to become a software engineer.

Destiny’s a dick lol. And close minded too. My profession is personal training, I’ve asked a guy that put his 10,000 hours into the field and he had a kinesiology degree. He recommended not getting the degree because it costs $60,000 and is less valuable than the certifications that are offered for personal training that would cost you like $5000. A degree would be a colossal waste of time and money for me

I’m 50.
I grew up when university was non-negotiable.
I loved graphics and wanted illustration. As the top student I was told that path was “for the less gifted.”
So I entered a respected Economics program I hated.

Six months in I found an American college offering IT I loved.
My parents said: if you want IT, finish Economics too.
Four intense years later I had both a BSc in IT and an Economics degree.

Then the web took off. I mastered Photoshop 2.0 and every design tool on my own.
Job by job I built the creative career I’d dreamed of.
IBM hired me for e-learning and design.
Economics? Never used.
The degree was only the ticket that opened doors—and still is when I launch a business today.

All the real skills came from passion, grit, and relentless self-learning.
University didn’t give me my craft; it gave me credibility and the mindset to grow.

👉 Takeaway: if you can avoid debt, do it.
A degree can be just a ticket, but sometimes that ticket is what keeps your future wide open.

I’m an electrician no degree. I do residential electric which is on the lower end pay wise but it doesn’t really matter i make around 80-100k a year only been doing it for 5 years. So the 5 years people spend to get a lame ass degree just put them like atleast 300k behind

Idk if anybody will read this but i went to med school at 25. After high school I did a bachelor's and masters (didn't complete the 2nd one) and then instead of going for phd I went to med school.... And ykw? All the thesis and presentations I made in Bachelor and Masters really helped me because I made presentations and wrote research papers in my college side by side studying medicine... My teachers were impressed because I had experience making presentations and ppts.... So they usually preferred me over other people.

I grew up blue collar working class. Going to college and law school was the beat financial decision I ever made, hands down! The student loans were $120k and ai have easily made at least an extra $2,500,000 in income over the past 16 years because of that choice so I got a great ROI.

I work in the trades with no college and make 75k+ a year. Trades can pay pretty descent, but there's also a lot of contractors who will take advantage of you, especially younger workers with little to no experience. On average, the pay isn't too bad, though. But having a degree, even if it's useless, does actually make you more qualified on average than someone without a degree when it comes to landing a job in most cases. Both college and no college have their pros and cons. I think it's hard to argue which path is the better option. There are too many variables. College seems to be more risky with a better payoff when things work out. But no college seems to be more stable, but also the range of class you're likely to end up in is more narrow than it is with someone who has a degree. It's kind of like this, play it safe for a middle to upper middle class income or take a risk and end up anywhere from lower class with debt to upper class retiring in your 40's or earlier. Plus a degree is like a longterm safety net giving you the option to fall back on something when you need to get out of a rut. The scary part though is the possibility of ending up getting stuck with that debt while not having any time or motivation to find a way out
