Technology is critical in all aspects of life, more so ever in the armed forces and equally important upstream oil companies drilling oil wells. You cannot bring a sword to a gun fight and hope/expect to prevail over your enemy.
Who has given Saudi, UAE and Qatar the technology to extract and transport hydrocarbons? Aramco, the state owned Saudi oil company was essentially started in partnership with American oil companies. It was nationalised to complete state ownership sometime in the 80s.
This crude oil infrastructure(discovery, drilling, extraction, processing, storage, transport etc) technology is not merely a technology partnership. There is a fair amount of backroom deals going on in a quid pro quo format that will expose the nexus among the various parties involved. Now that the petro dollar is overtly running their economies, their obvious focus is on diversification for the future with the petro dollar being a much lesser dominant revenue source. Their geographic location also makes it ideal to act as a hub/stopover in the airline hub and spoke model.
There are a lot of hush hush stories about Iran which rubbishes the prevailing theories of the 75 year old British-Iran conflict and subsequently the USA-Iran conflict.
A country the size of Qatar winning the sole rights to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup trumping both Saudi and UAE just goes to show the strength of the petro dollar with some serious Western power backing.
If you think about the hub and spoke model of airlines, Iran without the decades long sanctions hit could very well had become another option to Abhu Dhabi, Dubai and Doha for the EMEA sector.
Where do I see the Middle East in 50 years?
If they don't kill each other in the 50 years, there are going to be immensely wealthy petro dollar states with too much money and not enough ideas on planet earth to use that money. They might explore the solar system to optimise their financial resources. Barring Iran, these countries are surviving almost entirely on expats in terms of the everyday nuts and bolts of running the economy.
How soon can the use of crude oil and petchem taper off and begin the downward slope? Alternative industrial and transportation energy fuels are the answer. How fast can you scale is the Q?
