Even though this is 15 years old, and I should have already found and absorbed what he has to offer here, Guthrie's mention of the caged system in learning how to noodle in the style of Hendrix has helped me enormously in my recent quest to play mixed rhythm and melody in Hendrix style. Thank you GV!

"Stuff like that would help you to build up a vocabulary of Hendrixian noodles" - because of statements like this, I love Guthrie's announcements almost as much as his music. What other musician can express himself like this?
Through this mini-masterclass in guitar technique, Govan demonstrates how Hendrix reinvented various aspects of the guitar, including rhythm and lead playing, and how guitarists can incorporate these techniques into their own playing style using the CAGED system and incorporating lead lines into our chords.
Watch as Govan shows us, mere guitar mortals, how Hendrix's rhythm playing was a source of fascination for guitarists everywhere, especially as it blurred the line between rhythm and lead. He highlights how Hendrix could play rhythm licks as part of his lead playing and vice versa, creating a fluid and organic sound that was completely unique to the 'Axis Bold As Love' guitarist. Govan also demonstrates how the CAGED system can be used to create Hendrix-style licks by breaking down the fretboard into different chunks and superimposing major pentatonic scale shapes over each section.
Cool!
By breaking down Jimi Hendrix's guitar techniques step by step, Govan offers invaluable insights into how guitarists can improve their own playing and create a unique sound that draws on the legacy of Hendrix. Not to be missed if you want to learn more about Jimi Hendrix's technique!

Amazingly valuable and concise advise. Especially love the last tip in regards to advancing the CAGED system further understanding the fret board.. learning songs within limited chunks of the neck!?!! That's a perspective of practise that I've never thought of in my 3 decades of learning the art!! Awesome stuff

Amazing Guthrie.
More User Perspectives
He lives near me. Never met him but he goes into the pub my flat mate works at, proper nice guy by the sounds of it. Only seen him in passing never mustered up the courage to say hi. Maybe one day
@BigKnobJack69Physically, this guy is a melding of Sean Connery and Robert Plant
@nilla003"IN THE STYLE OF; JIMI HENDRIX"?
most young people become enamored with or by a particular Playing Style.
Stevie Ray Von and Robin Trower, represent Only Two successful Musicians who had been influenced by Hendrix.
THEREIN LAY THE PRIMARY PROBLEM;
ONLY TWO; out of many thousands who WERE INFLUENCED actually made it to Stardom.
FACT IS; this equation should be considered important as IT bares undeniable witness to The Obvious.
By Now; most of us have endeavored to Learn to Play ; "The You Tube Way", to little or no avail.
The Truth is; You will Never be that guy or gal simply because you are uniquely, somebody else.
THE EVIDENCE; nothing is more annoying than walking into a music shop and listening to 100 different versions of; "Smoke On The Water".
THE SACRIFICES; we have all tuned into every Rock Star interview to get a peek at THE PERSON and hope that WE Learn the deepest secrets to iconic stardom.
What you end up with, is a profile of a guy or gal who Puts their pants on, the same way you do. (some are bombed out of their tree, but end up like Jimi)
I personally wept when I heard of Gary Moore's death!!
THE BOTTOM LINE; u hear it a lot these days on you tube; "aren't u sick of being stuck and end up Playing the same riffs over and over, every time u pick up your guitar"?
I suppose it's true and it is designed to embarrass you into forking out more dough to GET THE AMAZING SECRET IN SERIES, which guarantees you The SPOT LIGHT?
So...without laboring the Point, u are smart enough to realize where I am going with this.
You Don't have to sell your soul to Satan, but you do need to study and practice the fundamentals which lay a solid ground work for you to Become really good and most importantly develop YOUR OWN SPECIAL TECHNIQUE AND STYLE.
Jimi's style made Jimi and a couple of knock offs Iconic, Page, Clapton, Beck.
But Being extraordinary at something SOMEONE ELSE HIS ALREADY ACCOMPLISHED, instead of Being your own personal achievement style producer, is simply second best.
SECOND BEST DOES NOT FILL STADIUMS.
Yes...this dude is good AND he makes his living trying to convince you that u can be like him; jack of all trades, master of none.
Anyone know the song at 1:35?
@petermchugh6014MUST HAVE HENDRIXIAN NOODLES! Thanks for the great lesson!

@clemintine99So good thank you 🙏
@ghug6764I think Guthrie in less than five minutes demonstrates pretty clearly why and how Jimi was no less than a genius.
@williamallen9697Fantastic!
@MegaGuitarpickerSuch a decent bloke and I think the best guitarist of this era
@xblood1978lo escucho y lo escucho y no se de a donde sacó que eso se parece al estilo de Jimi Hendrix

@michael_caz_nycAll good clean fun😆
@alternateimpact81I'm watching this, but I have no soul.
@Pimp-MasterHis fingers are like spider 🕷
@ayushmanbhalla8737I dunno, if I wish I could have hair like that, maybe I would play better?
@gymoverSatriani n Mr.Vai watch out he is about to take the top spot ,by far the most melodic n aggressive player I've watched n his styles r limitless.
@samball5554Excellence !!!!!!!
@MrRockinguitarIt’s like Bluegrass in a lot of ways, or at least the way someone like Bryan Sutton plays, playing leads out of a chord fingering.
@nicholastotoro7721Not just one of the greatest players alive, one of best teachers. A highly intelligent individual.
@SixStringFingerpickingMy favorite guitarrist 💪👏
@lucasoliveira7269he is a great guitarist but he cant play jimi. always he play him own styles and cant play any other guitarist styles like that.
@yekooWhat sets apart modern guys like Gowan from Hendrix (and the rest of the "old school" gang) is the fact that none of them are able to play with intensity and ferociousness as they did. In other words they would be blown away by a huge wall of sound coming from the same instrument and even the same notes. Just listen to any isolated guitar records from Hendrix, SRV, Page etc.., and you will hear how tremendous and full their right hand attack is. Every note is like a hammer. Try to be as precise and accurate with that kind of playing...,No way!
Someone in the comments below mentioned how this modern players completely miss the essence of Hendrix (and similar players) and I completely agree.
3:06 you don’t need the pinky there’s open strings for that he’s too lazy to weave in and out me too sometimes.
@josephanderson3889What song is 1:34 ?
