11:23 How Memory Forms

13:47 Why It's Important to Have a Good Memory

Hi guys!!!! I created a summary of what this taught us hehehe

How to memorize something fast
- Use these methods:
- Acronyms
- Mnemonics
- Melodies and Songs
- Chunking
- Association/Memory Place
- Chunking
How to retain information long-term
- Retrieve and Repeat
- Active Recall and Space Repetition is highly recommended to recover weak connections in the brain.
- Active Recall
- Test yourself instead of passively reading notes.
- Struggle is good.
- The harder it is to remember something helps strengthen memory.
- Spaced Repetition
- Recall the Forgetting Curve
- After learning new information, our brain naturally forget information overtime.
- How to do Spaced Repetition:
- Do reviews at right intervals.
- We can do this around 7-9 PM.
Three Steps of Memory Formation
1. Encoding
1. Our brain gathers information with the sensations we felt at a specific event. It then packages it, which is then stored in the hippocampus.
2. Storage
1. Our brain stores the encoded informations to be retrieved for later use.
3. Retrieval
1. The concept of our brain to remember a certain memory.
TLDR;
1. Use mnemonics techniques.
2. Active recall & spaced repetition

Why do we need this?
- Greater intelligence is associated with exceptional memorization, consistently shown in assessments and studies.
- We have two types of memories:
- Short-term memory
- Has a limited capacity
- Long-term memory
- Last a long period of time
- Can be retained for weeks, months, and years.
Working Memory
- A system that lets you briefly hold information and manipulate it.
- Can be converted into long-term memory.
- Practicing with memory techniques = improving working memory

Rote Learning is great for brain health for elderly people.
- It promotes metabolic changes in the hippocampus.
However it takes the fun out of learning.
- It does not a bridge for old and new information
- It does not promote critical thinking

What can we do?
- Establish engaging activities for our memory functions.
- We can do:
- Reading
- Learning New Skills
- Puzzles
- etc.
- Create good habits physically to improve memory retention (ex: eating healthy, managing stress levels, exercising).

I am ex Pakistani. Everyday watching problematic news on the web. Terrorist are wreaking heavoc in Baluchistan and Pakhtoon Khwah every day. Politicians are at odds with each other. Majority of public seems to be incompetent to understand democracy and how to behave. In my local language they say " Awai Da Awaa ee bigrya hoyeh" that is the whole thing is rotton.

I really enjoyed and benefited a lot from this video🙏, and I have a question: What about historical dates, how do we memorize them? I mean, do we use the same techniques you presented to us? 🤔

I have a theory (not original, unfortunately, but influenced by "Master your memory" by Tony Buzan). Develop a method to store information in your head like a filing cabinet. The above book by Buzan teaches you how to do it. If it's not clear, e.g. if you want information about the Sphinx, open the drawer for Egypt. Your cities are stored in this drawer in alphabetical order. You find Cairo and in the Cairo folder info you find information on the Sphinx.

I feel that people with an eidetic memory are either born with a way to file things in their brain in some order or they develop it naturally.

LOVE your use of the fork! I have the Rode II Wireless but also the little mic that goes under your shirt and clips onto your collar. It's an add-on. Subscribed and will forward to my mother who is now 85.

I don’t know about everyone here. But as a student of biological major i do these on my exam seasons. Also i think it will be more familiar to the medical majors or which subjects have many theoretical information to memorising. But the actual thing is how can you retain the info for a long time. Actually i think there isn’t any way except practicing and revising. That’s why memorising is the stupidest, easiest and non advantaging thing that you can have. As you are not inventing something, you are just trying hard to just remember what is already written or invented.
