the northeast US is overlooked , when speaking about mega cities. You can drive from New Haven Connecticut, through New York City, Trenton to Philadelphia to Wilmington DE, without hitting any wooden or undeveloped area. When I take that drive, it really seems like the cities are connected

Wouldn't merging cities diminish their unique qualities and homogenize them? I'd rather see distant cities grow independently and become more interconnected using technology like the Internet.

A big city wouldn't be that bad if they built skyscrapers that don't cost 10,000 dollars a month 😅

I think the first gigacity of the world will be Pearl River Delta. Moreover, I doubt there will be a second one considering the rapidly decreasing fertility rates all over the world.

Tbh, i dont care about the population of a city, i just care about the institutions, economy, standard of living, crime rate, tourism districts and average income

How big can cities get? Hypothetically, they can be as big as coruscant from star wars.

I live in the bush and don't even like going into the nearby town of 15,000 people. These megacities sound like hell on earth.

How can we continue on this path? I refer to the book "The Limits to Growth." It contains a message: we can create a society in which we can live indefinitely on earth IF we impose limits on population and the production of material goods to achieve a state of global equilibrium between population and production. A lot of energy is required to sustain a certain level of livability with so many people.

Just noticed that nobody's talking about tehran,and for a good reason: it's mid asf.seriously,the traffic (and pollution) is insanely high.i'd say it's pretty walkable (excluding the poopoo air) but jeez,try going with some sort of public transport that shares space with cars and youre cooked

6:59 Already you can actually take a high speed train between Beijing and Tianjin in 21 minutes. Of course you have to get to the station and to your destination on either end, but it really doesn't seem infeasible at all.

Cities in the USA can get much bigger. The Miami metro area will eventually stretch all of the way up through Jacksonville to the Georgia border and maybe up through Savannah and into South Carolina.

@StevenHughes-hr5hp

Tokyo is not really technically the biggest city just biggest metro just because cities grow together doesn't mean they all become one big city

You can make the argument that whole country of japan is itself a "Giga City." And probably the first true City State in the Modern or Post Modern Era of humanity.

How is Johannesburg a mega city it only has a population of 6 million including its metropolitan area. Unless you want it to be a mega city which will never happen in this life.

@consulargeneral8136

I like the idea of density. Not mega cities. Honestly, 300 million is way way too much. New York is one thing and I love New York. But that? Meh.

When you announced the Portland, OR, USA was in the running for your City of the Year I nearly bent over laughing. Comedy Gold. I guess having permanent underworld of leftist thugs continually rioting and endless open air drug markets/tent cities with STDs, murder and ODs is some factor in your "Best City" equation. I guess the No-Go-Zones, car arsons and racist riots keep Paris in the running. I can't wait to see who wins your coveted Shitti Award.

Coruscant is an example of an Ecumenopolis. The Ecumenopolis (World city) is a concept where all the cities in the world expand enough to combine into one single, paving over every desert and tundra, the polar caps, and perhaps even the ocean. However, it's a good idea to minimize the environmental impacts through buildings with enclosed ecological systems - arcologies. As impressive as those mega-cities mentioned in the video are, combined they take less than 1% of Earth's surface area. In the case of an ecumenopolis, it could comfortably house a trillion people while living at the density of rural regions today.
