How Do Referees Get Promoted?
Video Overview & Insights
Ever wondered how referees climb the ranks in football? In this video, I break down the refereeing pyramid in England — from grassroots to the Premier League. Whether you're just starting your journey or aiming for the professional leagues, this guide will help you understand the structure, levels, and what it takes to progress as a referee.
I'm aware the video isn't a perfect representation of how the levels work - this more to just help people understand the general way in which referees are separated into their levels here in England.

who referees efl cup and fa cup games is that select group 2?
@fin720sthanks for the vid. can not yet join reffing but will attempt soon...
@MattScoots-YTAll that work and the standard of refereeing in league one and two is absolutely the worst I've seen, making calls from 40/50 yards away
@StevenSawersMusicYou now need 5 games as an AR from 7-6 as well (from someone who is currently doing it!). And 2A was merged into Level 1 last season and 2B just became 2
@GabrielThornton-uc1loI wanted to be a referee at one point but I also wanted to be a keeper. So I decided on goalkeeper eventually.
@CUSAadvertisementwith you being a ref can you explain the concussion sub rule to me please can you do the concussion sub at the same time as doing other subs like you would normally do without doing a concussion sub
@Chris-r6q7gI did Promotion 7-5 one season
@Galifornia_9522I just passed my course a couple months ago and haven't done my first youth game yet. What do I do after my final whistle?
@DjhdanieljhI wonder how this compares in the America because I’m thinking about getting into reffing
@tjallday95What there so much divisions in England?
@Mandela-nn3cnLevel 11 recess futball
@DucksterwastakenAudio is horrible lad
@tobycrippinNot a football referee but being an an official in ice hockey (have experienced it in both the UK and Sweden), cool to see the parallels and the differences!
-so many different levels in football, even one for non active refs! It’s been a while but UK changed to four recently, (hockey not being a major sport in the UK) and even in Sweden from youth reffing to top flight it’s 6 (7 if you include a special classification just for women for reffing the top women’s league )
- for the richest football league in the world, refs at the prem level seem really underpaid. The NHL in Canada and the states pays c. 220.000$ starting salary, going up to a half million with tenure. Granted an NHL season is 80 games long, but still. Even at level 7 for all the running you do, 40£ seems so low, as a linesperson doing 5th tier men’s hockey, that’s 50£ish not including perdiems and travel costs.
Some other tale as old as time stuff are true. At higher levels conditioning must be incredibly high, superb knowledge of the rules, and communication top knotch.
Am I from England? No
Do I wanna be a referee? No
Did I still watch this anyways? Of course 😂
There’s also one mandatory quality to have when refereeing other than what you listed:
A THICK SKIN!
Some “fans” just go WAY too far with youth refs or whatever, that some aspiring referees up and quit!!
This job wouldn't be for me but someone that has good fitness or used to play football would be a good job
@StarkBeasts9I don’t know if this can even be called a step
But I’m at the step of saving every penny I have for the course I was paying the family Disney plus cancelled it today to get more I only get 5 pound a week from mother but it has been increased to 50 this week since I passed my exams and then
To be at the top you just have to favor Real Madrid
@briandinho7688Love the video
@alfmartin8064The algorithm has done it again! Well explained, concise and easy to understand! Hopefully the referee version of Ben foster soon!
@OttoTalksAiI'm blind, Im deaf, I want to be a ref
@Uniqued_MKOIm not from England but this video gives me a good understanding of how the pyramid works, so i hope you keep up the great work and get promoted😊
@AfonsoSilva-c4t100k seems pretty low for top level refs tbh
@EzeBall1710Another great informative video mate! I've just got my Level 5 promotion. Hoping to go for my 4 this coming season, I think the only bit that will let me down is that DREADED fitness assessment
@TheVloggingRefMy aim was to get to level 6 asap but since doing the course I've realised at the age of 53, I'm happy at level 7, mainly refereeing kids games as and when, Is your aim to go as high as you can, Eric?
@gingerwoods616When I suggested you did this, I wasn't expecting cool animations. Production values coming along strong mate. That was a good summary. No doubt you'll be officiating at level 5 next season.
@TromadorWhen you ref the champions league final, I’ll be able to say, I was here, let’s go Eric
@danieljones3994They removed level 2B and 2A a year ago. Its now level 2 and National Group who cover NL Prem, FL2/1
@BenjiMcdonald-tn5uuWhat a brilliant video Eric!! So simple but one of the clearest and detailed roadmaps I've seen in a long time! Great work, love it!!
@lukestretton9009You can do it Eric, I believe in you. And just saying I’m a big fan!
@TemuPlayzLolGreat video really interesting thanks for sharing!
@worriedmiltankWell done Eric. Great use of graphics to explain the process and just like your refereeing… you don’t hang around!
