How To Become A Police Officer - Training And Education Questions

Video Overview & Insights

You want to be a Police Officer, Court Officer, or Special Constable, but you're not sure what to take in school. Something that would assist you not just during your career in Law Enforcement, but ultimately what will help you get your foot in the door and increase your chances of being hired. Something that would impress recruiters and help push you through the process.

I want to be member of RCMP

— @onasissantiago9662

There's certainly plenty to choose from - Police Foundations, Justice Studies, Forensic Sciences, and many other courses related to Law Enforcement and Policing, and the Criminal Justice System.

As stated in previous videos, post-secondary education isn't a requirement, however, I don't know anyone who has been hired with a high-school diploma, who also hasn't done anything to better themselves before applying. Taking the opportunity to grow and expand your knowledge through additional schooling or opportunities at work.

I’m a licensed electrician of 13 years wanting to become a cop!

— @Glizzl3r

I didn't attend College or University, I completed a four year carpentry apprenticeship which showed recruiters that I could stick to something with an end goal.

Some might not like what I have to say in this video, but that doesn't change the fact that the scenario I mentioned has happened to thousands of individuals who had their hearts set on a career in Law Enforcement, yet were not successful.

I will be the best toronto officer

— @uncledeane2753

The training and experience you receive from other professions could be extremely useful in your career in law enforcement. I've worked with individuals who came from the banking and financial sector who ultimately ended up investigating frauds. Their investigative skills were enhanced by their knowledge of the field.

According to a recent stat, the average person will change carers 5-7 times during their working life. If Policing is your second, or even third career, I'd love to know what you think.

I will be the best toronto officer.

I’m really interested in becoming a police officer, but I’m concerned because I’m 5'0" (female). It made me wonder whether the field is too competitive for someone my height, and if I might face any issues when enrolling or later on as a police officer. I would really appreciate your guidance.

Hey Randall, when you applied back in the day, were you at any point an auxiliary officer or cadet? Would you recommend someone applying to be a constable take that route first ? people always tell me you need extensive volunteering and that's almost becoming a deterrent for me applying, because I don't have much official volunteering, any insight is appreciated.

My son in high school did a summer work program with the Toronto Police and decided he wants to be a cop. He was told by some of the senior officers that he should pursue a degree as opposed to the foundations program. I’m surmising that they want someone who has organized their own lives well enough to pursue a degree successfully, and have not been engrained into a particular mold as an applicant via the foundations programs (not to besmirch their offerings). Too many assumptions? Great advice about choosing what you would want to do otherwise if you don’t get your first pick.

I’m not sure if your going to see this but I like the idea of posting this comment. I’m 15 turning 16, entering grade 11 on Aug 26th, and I have decided to dedicate myself to attempting this occupation. I have a strong bond with the community, I’m athletic, good in a team environment, extremely hard working; and I have learned that I am very good under high stress situations. My current plan is to dedicate myself to 2 years of college for both Police foundations, and my backup college course, parks and recreation. I believe parks and recreation would be an easier course that I could likely do alongside with Police Foundations (though I’ll do further research with educational assistants to see if that’s a viable plan). So in regard to this, I was wondering a couple questions. First, does Police Foundations put me above other Candidates whom haven’t? Second is York regional police, a strong force to get into? Third, will I have much choice over my District throughout my career? And Lastly, what would you recommend as the rough amount of times to apply for a Job with YRP, until I should focus on my backup Job instead? Thank you so much for this video, and I hope this isn’t too much to ask as I know it is a lot.

Hello Sir,

I recently moved to Canada and am interested in pursuing a career in policing. Back home, I had the opportunity to work closely with special forces as their spokesperson, which gave me valuable experience in law enforcement communications.

I hold a bachelor's degree in Journalism and Mass Communication, which has been evaluated by WES Canada as equivalent to a bachelor's degree in Communications. Given my background and aspirations, I would appreciate any guidance or referrals to individuals or organizations that could assist me in navigating the process of joining the police force.

I currently reside in Toronto and would be grateful for any advice or recommendations you may have.
Thank you.

Is it hard to get into Toronto Police out of Highschool? You mentioned that was popular around the time your father joined. I’m interested- but I’m still deciding between military or police. I’m definitely open to attending post secondary but I’m just curious.

Would joining the CAF co op program possibly help me with becoming a police officer in the future? I figured it would be a good opportunity to go out of my comfort zone, have leadership opportunities, physical health etc. I’m planning on taking criminology and psychology when I’m out of high school, and after watching this most likely police foundations as well. Becoming a police officer in York Region has always been a dream of mine.
