I don't think the guy that jumped on the train was gonna scam you. You could've just told him, let's walk over to the other drivers and compare prices. Maybe India is worse these days but I don't remember it being that hard to just cruise by people and say no, and I went everywhere.

"Hello friend, hello brother, where are you from".
All signs that the person wants to get in your wallet. I usually say nothing and just raise my hand in a "stop" or "back off" gesture, shake my head and do not stop walking. One guy asked why I was so rude and that he just wanted to talk. And I said, because at some point you are going to ask me for money. You will want to provide some service and then overcharge me. So I am walking away now.
I would not suggest even interacting, but he asked a unique question so I answered him.

I too felt disgusted and was ready to go home, then I travelled to some smaller towns in the north and far south and the scams decreased a lot.
Avoid holy men wanting to bless you or give you a flower, or put a tiika on your forhead. They will all aggressively want you to pay for whatever they just did or gave.
Avoid people helping you outside train stations or airports, temples etc. unless you know they work there for sure, and most places people working at gates for tickets and entry will have on uniform of some kind.
As Karl has said in videos, if you are in an airport ask someone traveling. Same with a train station. You will eventually find someone who speaks English and they are more than willing to help you.
If you are approached for any reason, walk away. 100% it will be a scam. I fell for a couple of them costing me about $200 or so before I finally caught on. Felt like an idiot, but learned a lesson and hopefully I can help others now!

To anyone reading. Only people in uniform INSIDE or at the official IRCTC office which is INSIDE not outside can actually help you.
Trust no one who approaches you outside the station. Here is my story.
I had a 6am train, everything was set, I knew where I was going. Felt good about my first India solo train ride.
Walked up to the station on the Paharganj side and a guy approached. He looked very official, well dressed, pad in hand, ask to check my ticket. Then told me I had the wrong ticket I needed a tourist ticket.
I should have known right then. It was so obvious in retrospect. But I asked him where do I get it.
He had tuktuk drivers lined up to play the scam. One said 2000 rupees and he yelled at the guy,in English-another sign he was playing to his audience of one, then found me a TikTok that drive me to an IRCTC "official" tickets sale place.
It was really just a place that sells tours. The guy said he couldn't book me on this train and asked why I bought the wrong ticket. He said he couldn't book get me where I wanted to go for $200 USD.
I knew I was scammed and I also missed my train.
I ended up finding a guy (probably also part of the scam) who drove me the 6.5 hours to my next stop for $100. 6.5 hour taxi ride for $100 isn't that bad, but the train cost me $7!!!

I was so angry, but had to just let it go. Those people will forever live a horrible life, thinking they are happy because they basically robbed me and other, but they can never know true happiness because they are scum.

As an Indian, I was in Japan recently.. the contrast is so drastic. It’s so unfortunate you had to make this. I don’t know when we will get over this scam mentality from tourists. It’s hurting tourism even though the country has so much to offer.
