I find it interesting that in film or tv acting, the actor is supposed to know their character inside and out, and notes from a director should be small adjustments, while in voice acting, the voice actors rarely know anything about the script or character before they're in the booth, and it's on the director to give exceedingly specific notes on each and every line spoken.

Ask ten directors on how to direct a film and you’ll get ten different answers. While there is no surefire answer to how to direct actors, there are strategies and approaches to consider. In this video, we’ve collected words of wisdom from some of the best film directors, past and present, on their specific approaches to directing actors. Topics covered include the casting and rehearsal processes, giving notes, and the importance of allowing for spontaneity on set.
DIRECTING STARTS WITH CASTING AND REHEARSAL
Like most art, it about developing your style.
There is an adage in filmmaking that “directing is 90% casting.” Some directors, like the Coens, rely on the audition process to ensure that the actor is actually right for the part. Jordan Peele admits that he hopes the actor will understand the character better than he can. Greta Gerwig values the rehearsal process to work out the more creative elements of a scene, while Spielberg chooses to save the spark of the performances for the set.
HOW TO GIVE DIRECTION WITH NOTES
Actors in the hands of the film directors is similar to the liquid paint in the hands of the painting artist. It's extremely difficult to determine/control how the liquid paint colours flows/shows up on a canvas. In that sense, the film director's job is almost impossible. Never ever interfere with the artistry of the film directors. Especially so for the rich imbecile movie executive... Interference from executive in movies always ends up destroying the end product, no exception!!! Film directors are professional for a reason. Just leave them to carry out their paint brushes...
A set can be a stressful place, and tensions are high for everyone involved. How to work with actors on set requires a special set of skills. As a young director, Ryan Coogler couldn’t help but be direct and honest with his actors. Tarantino agrees: “It’s about being specific about what you’re saying because if you’re arbitrary, they’re a fish looking for water.” David Cronenberg likes to leave the actors alone as much as possible on set, having done all the prep ahead of time.
DIRECTING ACTORS & SPONTANEITY
I dislike when a Producer makes themselves the Director. Usually their direction is too vague or overly complicated. If inexperienced the DOP inadvertently ends up directing the film.
Even with the weeks of pre-production and rehearsal, many directors advise leaving room for spontaneity. Directors like Kelly Reichardt embrace the variables that come into play when the uncontrollable elements influence the controlled elements. John Cassavetes was a huge advocate for improvisation, sometimes surprising his actors with notes and scenarios, capturing a more natural and unfiltered performance.

Do not listen to shi bullshit video. It's a directors medium therefore it's the directors and only the directors vision. NOT a cohesion of department heads. Direct your DP, direct your AD and direct your actors but most of all direct YOUR vision. If you can do that you'v golden.

As a movie director, your job is hiring talent people and cast the right actors to play their respective roles, obviosly there are exceptions, think of Klaus Kinski, who was known for being a crazy violent actor, besides it's incredible how Werner Herzog had to deal with his behaviour although they made five movies together. Now, it's different as anyone can do an Instagram live, so it's hard to unfake chemistry with someone's knowledge on a set, so Klaus Kinski would be probably cancelled today because of his dark side & the hell he created on a movie's set.

@jeffreylawrence6928Being a photographer for so many years I’ve learn how to give the best advice on directing my cast as much as I can. I believe you have to show your direction to your cast in order for you to let them know the vision you’re trying to capture.
@lookintokI like this series but to be honest, the narration voice over is a bit insufferably precious, like an old school BBC documentary about cute little birds & flowers made for school children. This highlights one appeal of DIY video essayists, they are sometimes amateurish but don’t feel condescending. Maybe that’s not the right word, maybe it’s simply a greater feeling of authenticity, not a professionally polished voice to sell you nature docs, retirement insurance, instant cookie dough, and baby strollers all in the course of one broadcast day. Just my take, I wonder if others agree.
