How to Grow Tomatoes in Containers or Grow Bags - Trellis Ideas for Indeterminates
Video Overview & Insights
Indeterminate tomatoes are difficult to grow well in containers and grow bags because of the trellising issue. Indeterminates can grow 20 feet tall over a long season. How do you trellis tomatoes in a container? In this video I'll show you 2 ideas that really work!
Just want to point out that indeterminates absolutely produce lots of tomatoes from those suckers, they become entirely seperate main stems, and will produce tomatoes all the way up it throughout the season. An unpruned indeterminate, which admittedly is a monster to manage, will produce easily 5x+ as much as a single stemmed indeterminate over the course of the season, in fact you can see how a sucker will double your harvest by just letting one go, you will see that it produces a flower cluster at the exact same height as the main stem, right along side it. One sucker literally gives you 2x tomatoes, so it's absolutely worth coming up with a way to support as many suckers as possible on each plant.

I have a 2 ft deep raised garden bed. I want to make the teepee to string it along. I have 6ft bamboo stakes, so 2 ft will be in the bed, is 4ft teepee enough length for stringing?

PRODUCTS I LOVE
I planted indeterminate tomatoes in a 15 gallon grow bag last year. Those tomato cages fell over the minutes we got some rain with strong winds. I got some bamboo and pushed them down into the grow bags ( in an attempt to make a teepee). But by the time I did that, The plant was already just too big and heavy with already growing fruit that no matter what I did, my tomato plants just kept falling over. Despite all that, the plants still did surprisingly well and we were still able to harvest lots of tomatoes!😊

I have grown tomatoes in containers for years and use a Texas size cage like you showed but much more beefy. Tried the teepee method but not much luck.

I just planted two bee steak tomato plants in 25 gallon grow bags a week ago
@steveandrushko75I have been a container gardener for quite some time however this year I'm starting the grow bags. Looking to forward to a bountiful harvest. I'm going to give a tomato trellis like the one you made a shot. I hope mine looks as good as yours. thanks for all the videos I totally depended on them❤️
@Nan54424Growing most of mine in the 20 gallon grow bags
@dwwcoder5048👍
@mahshidfadaei3531Can I do this with Grow Bags instead of a pot? And also how many gallons size grow bags should I use?
@fgrodriguezqac👍
@ShirleyNelson-b3xCan you show us how to rejuvenate oral old soil?
@leerocha1903A coworker of mine, says that he ties a rope/twine up to the house gutters-and that's pretty high but of course I take it that he might have to climb a ladder to harvest if his tomato plant gets that high. Anybody else try this?
@gregkisinger4183I grow all my tomatoes in grow bags mostly in 7 and 10 gal bags. I have tried several methods with little success
@DIGardeningWhat size grow bags are good for intermediate tomato plants
@ScottMSmith-cw2ntI would also suggest once the tomatoe plant reached the top and turning the hook comes into play. Pay attention to the bottom layer of the plant. Some varieties still have leaves below and i recommend paying attention to avoid and disease buildups and pests.
@strategygamer5239Hi! I’m a new New Gardner, what is your process when planting in a pot with tomato or pepper start. How much do you fertilize and what do you use when planting. and how often do you feed the plant? What do you use.
Enjoy your Channel! Watched it a few times
I use a very similar method. I don't use a teepee as top support, I have a thick metal bar running across a metal stand on each side.
@terryli340very good thank you
@michelbisson6645Will the teepee trellis work for cucumbers in a container?
@debbiebridges6350Hello. Great video thank you so much. I will definitely try the hook idea this year. One question to you please. For a single undetermined tomato plant like in your video what size of the pot would you recommend? In terms on volume and depth for the bamboo sticks to hold? Thanks again!
@lukagrubac1685When we use the hooks and extended the string, doesn’t that mean the rest of the plant gets crushed down by a foot? Wouldn’t that cause rot or damage when watering? Thank you.
@lmlmlmlm7627Ingenious with the teepee and string
@45valkWhat is the minimum container depth for Indeterminates? I always thought they had a root structure that can extend 2 ft. or more.
@adow7382Your method is really the best. I used it last year and it was the first year my cherry tomatoes didn’t take over my entire growing space. Thanks!!!
@SailorllunaCan I put my grow bags directly on my patio or do they need to be placed in something like a kiddie pool as I’ve heard some people do?
@6atlantisWe tied two large baskets together end to end with wire ties, that gave us 10 feet of cage and we got 8 foot cherry tomatoes before frost.
@leveraction6917The newer style grown bags with the liner is my question. How did this work out and what is the product. Thanks much
@tomluscombe4269Learning, pots and going to use hydro pots.
@vickiegraham450New gardener here. First time growing tomatoes. Had a 3 ft stake which plant has outgrown and need to switch. Like this method, but I had one question. As you lower your vine and it starts to coil around bottom, won’t it touch the mulch and will that cause disease?
@Ret2PlayI grow everything in containers on my deck. I need to make more space for more plants in the sunny areas. I've used tomato cages for all tomatoes plus stakes. I haven't figured out a way to do different yet but with your videos I'm getting ideas for hubby to construct (or me if he doesn't get motivated soon. Thanks for your help & teaching!
@JoyfullyOrangeDeborahIt might be Very Helpful to your SUBSCRIBERS to define the Fact that 5 Gal. GROW BAGS DO NOT ACCOMODATE A FULL 340 Liquid Oz. (rather a "TRADE" 7 Gal. / 10 Gal. might be preferable)!
@charlesripplinger633I have placed my Gro Bags ("TRADE" 5 Gal.) directly below 10" Shelf Brackets on my Yard Fence Posts. We are moving to a new home. Do you think I'll be able to DISCONNECT the String & TRANSPORT them to their new location 12 Miles Away???
@charlesripplinger633Which tomato vegetable fertilizer do you use?
@daynastithem3576Got a nice plant in a big pot,storm knocked it down but the big tomato cage I have on it saved it from breaking,yay
@rubyewiggins4926awesome - thanks.
@BarbaratenBroekeGrowing in grow bags this year for the first time
@pastordensharp7524I've made your trellis for the tomatoes but i cant find a video where you tell us how to prune the tomatoe plant, i know take sucker off but do we cut every branch except for center where will tomatoes grow if we do that??? HELP!!!!!
@christinaheard7626I’m trying the grow bags for the first time this year. I’m just not able to do a huge garden this year. That’s for the trellis info. I have 2 tomato plants in a 10 gal grow bag. I’m thinking about taking one out. What do you think? Thank Bryan and happy gardening?
@Diane56fulThanks Brian,i have tried growing in the containers and are doing quite well
