During the colder months , I've been feeding my Anna's 3:1 water-sugar ratio , it is recommended by many places online to do this when the temperature is consistently under 10° Celsius ( 50° Fahrenheit), but then says switch to 4:1 water-sugar when the temperature gets consistently above 10° Celsius (50° Fahrenheit )( this is in Victoria, B.C) This is to provide them extra calories they'll need to get them through the colder temperatures of winter / early spring until the temperature gets consistently above 10° Celsius . It also prevents the nectar from freezing in winter if the temperature starts to dip below 0° Celsius. This means that here on Southern Vancouver Island, feeding them this 3:1 mix will be necessary until late spring when day and night temperatures consistently stay above 10° Celsius ( 50° Fahrenheit)

My humming birds fight each other all the time. I have 4 different feeders up, each feeder has 4 places in which they can feed themselves. It looks like your hummingbirds tolerate one another better. I’m in South Carolina so I may have a different breed. Any recommendations.

I’m adding one hummingbird feeder every year. I had one that came with my house a year and a half ago… I bought one last spring and just got my third from my son for Christmas… actually it was in his storage & he let me have it. I’ll bee keepin em all filled this spring… I think the season starts around mid to end of March for us… my neighbor knows… he told me last year that o better get on it… but I didn’t start filling them til April … if I remember correctly… I’ll be ready this year. They are so joyous!

My store bought has polysorbot 20 food preservative , sodium bicarbonate ( baking soda)
And Baking powder.

There are commercial products available that include potassium and other essential nutrients but nobody who feeds these guys talk about them. I mix about 2-1/2 gallons a week to feed the hummers that started coming to our Tennessee farm house about 3 months ago. There’s dozens of them now, fattening themselves up for their trip south sometime soon. I have four feeders and a bath pan out for them now and will be ready for them again when they come back. I used to think I was being dive-bombed by bumblebees when we bought the property ten years ago, never could see what was flying around my head. it wasn’t until this year when we moved in did I realize they were hummingbirds. If I stand real still they’ll come up to feeders a few feet from me, sometimes getting in my face for a second to chirp a couple times and go back to feeding. They’re awesome. This is a Great recipe. I have humming birds coming to my yard. However!!!! The wire on the flowers are a dangerous trap for the birds. I had to remove all the wires from my feeders. Humming birds do NOT need to rest on the wire to drink. Someone posted a video. They tried the wire and one of the humming birds got stuck in the wire. FYI
