How to Pet a Cat - Cat Petting 101

Video Overview & Insights

How to Pet a Cat

My sister has had cats for about 12 years. We grew up as a dog family. My household didn't have any pets until 3 years ago when we got a kitten, then another kitten 3 weeks later..then a year later a stray, and few months later another stray. My sis asked if we could home her cat, an 11 year old cat and I saw her petting her cat and she'd growl at my sister and I told her that she seemed not to like that..but she insisted to keep petting her. We have had her for 2 ½weeks and knew from the 1st day what her boundaries are. She would growl at us as she rubbed on us..I stuck out my finger, let her pet me...and she stopped growling..she knows we understand eventhough my sister never understood her❤❤

HAHAHA 😂I had to comment after watching the end of the video. I tried to take a video of my kitten when he first woke up and I commented in the video when he decided to turn around the show the camera his butt. I said and, “You just had to add your butt to the video.” 😂😂

This is why cats prefer the elderly, they’re gentle souls who don’t make any sudden movements and don’t talk so loud, plus they have lots of time on their hands to bond with them

I always put my hand out so it could sniff me I didn't know u were supposed to but it was just natural 😂

but how deep should you go when you pet them? Should you go deep enough you can feel their muscles, or just their fur?

Thank you for this video. 😀

I’ve always known this
Never pet a cat instantly
Sit near it for a few moments make sure the cat knows your there

Slowly reach out your hand and stop near them to sniff for a bit
Making friends with a cat is all about letting it get comfortable with you at its own pace

Thank you for posting content like this. As a 30 year dog owner, I feel quite at a loss sometimes trying to figure out a cat I rescued last year. The fact that I searched “how to pet a cat“ shows just how clueless I am at all of this. 😅 cats are just different. Mine won’t eat unless her food bowl is filled to the brim. She acts like she wants me to pet her, but then she gets irritated when I pet her. She ignores me until I sit down to do work, and then she becomes Velcro-plopping herself in front of my computer and refusing to budge. Just sitting there purring and messing with my keyboard. Don’t even get me started on the fact that they can jump on countertops and have this obsession with knocking all of my stuff off. The struggle is real. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Just wanted to tell you how much I enjoy your page and your products! They truly have transformed the relationship between me and my cats, and more importantly, the relationship between the two of them. Thank you immensely!

When I encounter new felines I try to let them smell my fingers first, if they show more interest that’s when I start petting their head.

I have a cat and sometimes when I pet him I’ll rub my chin against him similar to how cats do when they rub their face on things. Oh man, the purring he does when I do that is really sweet.

Thank you! - Our neighbour's cat decided to visit us daily now but without former cat experience I watched some of your videos. The Michelangelo finger was already a game changer: I did let her sniff before, but with the whole hand. The finger is visibly much more appreciated. I just searched for another video because after a while she scratches and bites. And it seems to be exactly for this reason: She loves the head and positions herself as if she would like a whole body stroke, but after a short while it is getting too much for her. Now I know what to do! Will stick to the head for now and go for the ears after a while to see if she likes ist. :-)

I have learned over the years with my cats is that if they aren’t reaching for me, I just put my hand closer to their nose and allow them to let me know if they wanna be pet. My cat LOVES chin, ear, and cheek rubs. Whenever I pet my cats, I also make sure to pet them with the knuckles above my fingernails so that I don’t accidentally scratch them. It’s usually softer. The only problem is that my cat loves them so much that she actually will push her chin down on my hand so much that I have to prop my elbow somewhere so that it doesn’t fall 😭 One thing about another cat I have is that she sometimes like rubs just above the tail. Not sure why. My other cat hates it, but the other loves it. There’s probably an explanation for it and I just don’t know 🤷‍♂️

I just recently got a cat and everytime i try to pet him he kinda runs away but comes back, He ducks his head and i don’t know where else to pet him.

I've had a few cats as a child, but as a child you usually approach cats when and how you feel like.
I'm 28 now and I just my first cat on my own. I know that I have to let him decide whether or not he wants to be approached and I know I'm not supposed to just go in there and give him the biggest bear hug, but I'm a bit unsure when is the right time to approach him. Obviously not when he's sleeping (which he does a lot), but when he's awake, when is the right time? I just got him yesterday but I think that knowing when to approach him plays a big part of gaining his trust. He does show signs of trust when I interact with him but it can very quickly be broken and I don't want that to happen.

@Nicklas.G.Rasmussen

This is kinda a wild speculation on my part, but I think that part of the reason cats like being pet around the chin is that it’s a place that they can’t reach themselves for grooming.

Thank you for this video! I am a first time cat owner who is used to dogs and have been trying my best to learn the language of cats to help make my feline friend as happy in our home as possible. I am like a baby who has to learn absolutely everything including the proper way to meet and pet her so I'm really glad that you recognize that some of us honestly just don't know until we are taught. Luckily, I figured out the ear thing on my own (or maybe my cat showed me because she loves that) but I have made the mistake a lot of just walking up to her and stroking her whole body when I want to touch her instead of asking permission and letting her show me what she wants like you taught here. I will do better now that I know better! My cat thanks you. :)

I was really lucky to get a SUUUPER friendly rescue kitten (her momma was a street cat and also really sweet)

She just loves pets and cuddles all the time, but she always confused me as of where she actually wanted pets 😅 this video helped a lot!

I love this. I got two new kittens a few days ago and their personalities are so different despite being brothers (same litter) Midnight loves being pet and was basically "pet me anywhere i do not care just please pet me" right out of the box. While jasper is my sweet wallflower baby who was scared of his shadow. Hes getting better though hes still nervous; but i follow one rule. I only will pet cats if they want to (i tend to put my hand out to see if i have permission. Though ill try the finger maybe the hand is intimidating) and pick them up only when absolutely nessisary unless they are perfectly happy being held. Midnight again loves being held and carried so i tend to do it more often. I have yet to pet jasper except for the few times i had to pick him up (it was nessiscary) and hes slowly working his way to tolerating me! He even took a nap above my head on the couch which i counted as a huge step. Some cats just dont wanna be touched and thats okay with me. I play with them every morning for at least a half hour before they have their naps. But either way petting or not they are both my sons and i adore them ♡. I try to respect jasper as much as i can! Thanks for the ear trick imma try it out on midnight when he wakes up!

A stray cat kept following me today and suddenly shrugged his tiny head against my leg. It let me pet him playfully. It has since then become my sole mission to become a cat owner. Wish me luck

Another cardinal sin that everyone makes is petting too fast.

SLOW DOWN!! Nobody enjoys being pet too fast, even you!
