Trying to add the melody I thought I was going crazy until I realized these are the chords for when it's in Db! So the first chord is actually Db69/Ab, right? But for most folks that would complicate the learning

6:51 can someone explain what he is saying from a music theory perspective when he says “move up a fifth” please?

Rick, I've been a long-time subscriber, and I love you, the man and the musician! But the last time you talked about bossa nova was with Dominic Miller. Ouch! He wasn't into it rhythmically at all! You're more sober and more accurate, but they're not quite the right chords. That said, it's still very correct and it helps a lot of people, so bravo! For your entire body of work. A little tip for learning how to pronounce Joao Gilberto, think about it in French, Jean Gilbert.😄
Anyway, thank you for what you do for music, the real kind, the kind with instruments and men who study to use them with heart! Love from Paris.

He should play it in F and put the melody on top, If he can. This is a waste of your time

A friend asked me to teach her son bossa nova guitar and this came up in my search. That was about 7 years ago .I think I subscribed around the half million mark and since then have watched so many interesting videos from you Rick. Thank you from a 73 year old living in New Zealand.

this is a very helpful tutorial! the chord symbols are throwing me; even though i know they technically fit the notes being played, my ear so clearly attunes to the Db6/9 (I) -> Eb9 (II) -> Ebm9 (ii) -> D9 (tritone sub of V) -> Db6/9 (I) movement, where each of these chords is played with the 5th in the bass. regardless, thank you for this overview!

Question: the first chord Ab6/9 to me looks like Db6/9 /Ab in other words Db 6/9 with the fifth Ab in the bass. Am I looking at it incorrectly?

Wow this was a bit easier than I thought.. I watched vid first and was confused then I played it and other than major 6 shape it wasn't too bad.

Now it's just getting the chord transitions smooth.

Rick, I have had a few sleepless night over this video. I was working through the chords, comparing the real book version, listening to you and how you describe this and also came across your friend Adam Neely's analysis of the song. This is where I am stuck. The 2nd chord, the Bbm6 chord is interpreted by all the versions that I see out there on the internet as Bb7, including Adam. Perhaps I am missing something but why is everyone "hearing the Major 3rd when you are clearly hearing the minor 3rd. Maybe you and Adam should do a cage match to sort this out. I would love to hear your analysis of this.

Thank you so much for giving that simple tutorial. I'm a beginner in bossa nova. I can play 3 songs (+ singing of course), La rua Madureira, Jardin d'hiver, Samba Saravah (french version). I want to learn " la fille d'ipanema" also in frensh and in that key. My inglish is too bad to sing 🤣
