How to read music - Tim Hansen

Video Overview & Insights

Like an actor's script, a sheet of music instructs a musician on what to play (the pitch) and when to play it (the rhythm). Sheet music may look complicated, but once you've gotten the hang of a few simple elements like notes, bars and clefs, you're ready to rock. Tim Hansen hits the instrumental basics you need to read music.

Thank you sew much I appreciate it 😌

"In the western music tradition..."
No. That's only in english. There is more west than your own belly button.

Thank you for explaining this 😊 It is frustratingly hard to find a clear explanation of reading music for someone who doesn't understand it at all x

Music is truly the universal language. You can speak Chinese, English or Italian and it will be hard to communicate in other person's language but certainly any of them can play the music in the partiture if they know how to read it.

I am 62. I am 100% musically "declined." have NEVER understood sheet music. I have tried SO many times.I just can't remember what a note is.I'd have to "count" each time for each note. I have NO idea how people can interpret SO much in a 'bar' and play it so fluently. I have bene editing video doing lighting for nearly 4 decades. Over that time I have developed this incredible rhythm (no pun intended, I don't think,) for precision timing for musical cues for said editing and lighting. I don't know how I do it. I can keep a perfect rhythm while doing lighting and editing. How is this possible? I am also a good "air drummer", but have NO idea what do when a friend offered to let me sit at his drum set. I couldn't function. Is that strange?

I could never figure out why the top line is E and not A which would make more sense, or why the piano seems to be an instrument where C is the basis of everything, but I play guitar, don’t read music, so tab makes more sense to me.

I've tried to read music my whole life. I play by ear. I guess I'm musically dyslexic. 😢 When I look at music notes, they all look the same.

For over 45 years I'm totaly dyslectic. And can't read any sheetmusic. I have an ferry good musical hearing. And never needed any sheetmusic. Even when I played in choirs and bands.

Started getting curious about piano as a child, but quickly dropped it. Recently, I realized that I don't have to simply admire people who play instruments, I can learn to play them, too. So, I'm starting my journey today. Most helpful video for ultra-beginners thus far. ❤

This is at the very basic beginner level. It doesn't scratch the surface of even the middle beginner level, not to mention intermediate and advanced which are nearly impossible for most non-musicians to even comprehend, much less able to even clap out the complex rhythms. This explanation seems great, until you turn the page and !#$@*""!!! (See you in 10,000 hours ... )

I tried to find a song were notes are named and sung in there actual pitch... unfortunately couldn't find abc variant... just do-re-mi... why?? In my childhood there was a cartoon were notes were singing themselves, each had a character...it was a soviet cartoon with do,re ,mi...
I struggle find smth like that for my students in abc systems...it's a pity...
