The funniest thing about the imporpper batter rule(s) is that teams could bat in literally any order they wanted to if the managers declared a truce and chose not to appeal eachother.

I will say, when I was an umpire for one whole season and read the rules, I too chuckled at the "make a travesty of the game" phrasing 😂

I read the MLB Rule Book twice. Once front to back, and once back to front. And what I can tell you is that it doesn't make a whole lot of sense reading it backwards, not much sense at all. But I notice that "err" is still pronounced air regardless of it being foward or backwards.

You should read the Team/General Manager manual next. That's the document concerning how teams can or cannot manage their rosters (injury, leave, etc.), conduct trades, claim players off waivers, and much, much more. Its far more important than the Baseball rules since the rules only effect the game between the chalk, everything else is up to the front office to decide.

My only guess for the home run but less than 250 feet is for a failed catch that goes over but never hit the ground before doing so, but that’s a cricket thing and I have no clue if that applies here.

I am honestly surprised that a group of drunken road fans have never attempted to get a home team forfeited by being rowdy and disorderly. Seems like something that would've been attempted at least once in the past century, lol

@15:27 the rule exists because of Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum having lines that were initially less than 250 feet away, so MLB had them erect two sets of fences and clarified the rulebook.

Can you do a followup to this, on the worst parts?

I'm going to guess if the under 250 feet fair ball over a fence is when it hits off a fielder in fair territory and goes over the fence before the foul pole.

10:36 an error you made, Umpire-in-Chief does not mean the Crew Chief, Umpire-in-Chief just means the Plate Umpire and my best theory for that regarding doubleheaders is maybe because back in the day, there was no such thing as day/night doubleheaders so the next game had to start within a certain amount of time

18:22 I'd say no, it went by the 1B so if the runner got hit by the ball after that then he'd be in the clear since the fielder by 2B was trying to go for it but I'd say that he wasn't making a good enough attempt to reach it

16:13 It might be possible in stadiums (stadia? nm not the point) that are enclosed. If a ball were hit high up but not particularly far out and then got itself lodged somehow inside or beyond the enclosure (say, by landing inside a girder that holds the roof in place), the rule exists so that this doesn't technically count as a home run even though the ball is irretrievable.

10:50, my guess is that if the home team wins the first game, they could just say "alright, no more playing" and not risk a loss

17:15 No, the batter should get the benefit because if a ball were to get stuck in the umpire's gear it was already a wild pitch of passed ball that got behind the catcher and was almost certainly on its way to the backstop. The most likely outcome of such a situation is that the batter would reach first safely.

About the improper batter. What if Edman becomes, like Rojas, a proper batter, say, by way of a single. Rojas is on second and Edman is on first, and they somehow got away with it? Cuz Edman is proper, Rojas is next to bat… except he’s on second base?

Something I find interesting is if you read the rule book very closely, you'll notice that it actually implies that ties go to the fielders. Rule 5.09 (a)(10) states that the batter runner is out if "he or first base is tagged BEFORE he touches first base" meaning that in the event of a tie, the runner is out because he didn't touch the base BEFORE the ball got there. MLB Umpire Tim McClelland clarified this point in "Ask the Umpire": “There are no ties and no rule that says ‘tie goes to the runner.’ The rule book says the runner must beat the ball to first base… If he doesn’t beat the ball, he’s out.”

11:45 As far as I know once a game is in play it's the Umpire's choice if it continues with the weather. Maybe it's in an effort to extend that to a situation where 2 games are played one after another like that. The decision to play the 2nd one is more similar to deciding to finish a game than the decision to starting at all.

17:20 I say let the batter have first but record the out. example: first batter strikes out and ball gets stuck on ump. It is now 1 out, man on first.
