FIFA is spending millions to create consistent, natural-grass playing surfaces across all 16 stadiums hosting the 2026 World Cup. Because many of these venues in the U.S. were designed for NFL football rather than soccer pitches, the project requires massive transformations at each venue. @Mr.RGBiggsGuyRGBGGrass for the sports isn’t the problem. The problem is the stadiums cost too much to only be used for 10 football games a year and they need to have concerts and other events in between the games. Those other events kill the grass.

@WookieWarriorzLight is easily solved nowadays with lightweight LED grow lamps. Stadiums around the world do this, literally laying a mat of lights over the field late at night to keep the grass healthy.

@mattdclarksonBottom line, artificial grass is used because it is cheaper than to keep maintaining natural grass. You just pay someone to paint the lines and logos. I dont buy the fact they had to "research" what grass was better for each stadium. For instance, Sofi in LA, you have three other stadiums, BMO, Dignity Health, and the Colosseum, all of which use natural grass, the same grass could have been used at Sofi. Essentially, every city that has an NFL stadium has a stadium in the same city where soccer is being played by a US MLS team, all of which use natural grass. At the end of the day, the NFL Stadium owners will just write off the cost of having to put the grass in.

@samwebb4362So wasteful. The installation and the removal. Even if the grass stays afterwards, the resources needed to maintain the turf is costly and demanding. NFL players don't need natural grass otherwise what's the point for all those protective gears they wear.
