International 8 Ball Rules - Beginners Guide
Video Overview & Insights
Simon Webb gives a beginners guide to International 8 Ball Rules. Running though all the key things you need to know to play the game.
Well, when I go to SE Asia in a few weeks, the vast majority of games are going to give 2 free shots for a penalty, and no requirements to hit a cushion after contact (pub rules?).
I will keep international rules ready in mind, if it has become standard in the pool halls, but I have honestly only run into these rules a couple of times. I think I prefer playing the more casual rule sets.

What if I pot one yellow off the break, can I then take reds if I want?

An invalid break because 3 balls didn't pass the mid-line and forcing a re-rack only makes the game more difficult for beginners. I've never heard of that rule in America, EVER!
To have only red and yellow balls looks like a money grab because I would need a different set of balls to play nine ball.
The rules are garbage. You people are destroying the game.

The loss of turn to snooker someone is the most ridiculous rule. Loss of turn should be okay, but you shouldn’t be allowed to put somebody in a snooker

One of the red crossed the line but rolled back up table. That doesn’t count as crossing?
@vietrulzStrange one the other night that I don't think is covered. Break off and white stays on the table but an object ball goes off the table. Obvious foul but is this ball in hand or behind baulk?
@kevinaddie9659If a player fails to nominate when it's not obvious which colour they are looking to go for does the referee call a foul or id there another process?
@DarrenSaw"imaginary lines" ill put this to the authority
@DonlishkoHellfireThis is f'in hilarious..... pool is simple hahahahahahahahahahahah WTF is going on these rules come from people who can't play hahahahahahahahahahahahaha
@DonlishkoHellfireBit confusing on loss of turn shot as you've been reds all game and then go to yellow?
@MatthewGreenwaySilly set of rules. Use WPA rules
@miketottenham1865I've been watching the Champions League on TNT Sports but I'm a little confused on who breaks first on a frame, and what's the cue ball icon and the EXT next to a player's name? Cheers 👍
@wattsiznameI am so confused with all the different rule sets now… I used know where I was with world 8 ball, now there are international, blackball, supreme, and goodness knows what else…. Is there not a standard set of rules anymore?

@maz8869Simple….. wow
@davidhobson464Hi Simon
When deciding colour's.
If I hit the ball I am going for (red) and I miss the pocket and it falls into another pocket. While this happens I also knock in a yellow
I went for red, but my red didn't fall first.
What happens
Hi Simon.
Can I do a skill shot to determine colours?
Just about all the questions in the comments are explained in rhe video, just watch it.
@DarrenSaw‘Turn the table over to him’ other genders play pool as well big man
@lisa_ghosnThanks for the video. If you miss all the balls or hit the wrong colour/black first when going for your ball by mistake is that ball in hand or loss of turn ?
@zxcvb007Am I right in saying you are not allowed to play a combo on the eight ball, it has to be potted in it's own right unlike blackball rules?
@Staropramen22What if on the break i put in the pocket only the 🎱 ball did i won or los the game ?
@mr_imrjIf you scratch the cue ball and pot the black on the same shot, do you win, lose, or respot the black? Thanks!
@BarelyLegitBeatsis there a video to explain rule 6h on frozen balls?
@tonyscicluna1Could you please provide the exact size of the table? thanks
@mamartinelli90If you pot say a red on the break can you still choose to be yellows?
@danielshayler67If i call a pot while snookered, coming off cushion first, and miss the pot, and at the same time covering the intended pot pocket, but not hitting a cushion, IE an obvious pot, that surely isnt a foul? Therefore, if i just call a possible, but hard pot all the time, thats a get out of jail card for nit hitting a cushion afterwards?😊
@jackquinn433If you nominated red on first shot and miss can oponent then nominate red?
@good_one_raggyIf, after a break, you pot a ball, you nominate reds and on your next shot, you pot it AND a yellow.
Do you carry on with reds, is that some sort of loss of turn?
Question on your open table combo example. If you do it just like your example and pot a stripe after hitting solid first, it turns over, but even though you did not make the solid, are you now solids or is it still open?
@lawrencebrumwellWhat happens if you make the 8 on the break? When your opponent scratches on the break, can you shoot at balls in the kitchen or does the cue ball have to leave the kitchen (baulk area) before contacting a ball?
@dryclimateutahon the break, if 3 points are not made and the cue ball is in off or off the table.
Is this a re-rack due to the 3 point rule not being met?
Ans the black ball ?
Is it possible to pot it with an opponent ball ?
Possible to pot it with my last colour ball ?
What about a jump shot. Is a jump shot legal?
@NAHUM-m9vJust a question do you have to have ball in hand after a foul or can you play it from where it is?
@terrybowkett6343What happens if a glance other opponent ball while potting the black
@jonanthony6078I also read that the cue ball is not allowed to leave the playing surface. I’m assuming this means if I break the balls and the cue ball jumps up, it’s ball in hand for my opponent? Jump shots are not allowed either, correct?
@kevinbradley8613An error in your video I think? A point is awarded if a ball travels past the middle. Even if it returns below the middle it is counted as a point. It does not have to rest above the middle line. A red traveled past the centre line and back down. Your first break was legal.
@aaronnicholls93553:14 does this also include if the that yellow ball was also red (i.e you need to pot the ball you played)
@dewiwilliams2902cba with this crap, pub rules are all good if you are just playing for fun, some guy taking 3 shots while potting my balls screaming new rules is just boring and not worth the money.
Will be coming back for the vids so I know if people are just making stuff up as they go along. But really don't get why we need all these new rules.
Im confused as to why youre adding so many arbitrary rules to begin with. Ive been shooting pool for nearly 30 years and the only rules ive ever heard are: scratches and call your shot on black. It feels like youre kinda ruining the game
@forty_two42With the cushion rule, what happens if you hit the cushion with the cue ball, then the target ball, but the target ball hits another ball that hits the cushion, is that a foul?
@wayneshilcock3027Are flukes allowed?
@learningwithlioshad403You made more confusions than clarifications; comment section is full of questions that need another video; with all possible cases.
@coldplayificationIs this a 7ft table?
@co43327dont like the americanisation tbh
@internetenjoyer1044After a breakshot, there is no any ball pocketed, then my opponent turn, he make a shoot but the cue ball and his object ball are pocketed at the same time. Do I still have chance to choose which color to shoot ?
@FantasticHuangWhat Is the difference between loss of turn and a standard foul?
