"It hurts": Retired BC couple out $17K after TD banking nightmare
Video Overview & Insights
A B.C. couple who banks with TD says they're speaking out after someone fraudulently transferred thousands of dollars out of their account.
They should sue the bank in class action. I believe there are several people defrauded in TD with unauthorized withdrawals. This is another example. I really feel bad for these people. Its very expensive these days and then being burdened by fraudulent payments which bank should have protected against. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7P8qtzceEyc
They say TD concluded the person who transferred the funds had knowledge of their banking credentials â something the couple vehemently denies.
Our Consumer Matters reporter Anne Drewa has more on this story.
The story is a bit weak. For example, if either one of this couple clicked a link on home computer and malware was installed, they are really lucky they only lost $17K. The story also didnât examine why only the line of credit was used to steal money. Perhaps TD does have fraud prevention on chequing and savings accounts. This is not good journalism.

TD seems to have many issues in this area of fraud , one would think there is insider work .

MANY errors and inconsistencies to this story! First, they were NOT withdrawals from their home equity line, they were "advances" of credit. Second, it was NOT a deposit account, so you do not have the same consumer protactions depending on "how" the advances were made.
Three: why did they CHOOSE to link their LOC to their online banking, if they don't know how to properly use and protect that technology?
Each case like this is an older, usually retired person, who are easily duped by scam emails and/or click on wrong links, and inadvertently give their information or device access to the fraudster! THAT is not covered under any consumer reg protection. They should be doing their banking the traditional way, in person!
I had very bad experienced in two of TD branches. The first one they deposited in wrong account and not my name so I complained right away the following day just when they opened the branch. Fortunately after some verifications and I said check your CCTV that I did deposit my hard earned money they returned it and deposited in my account. After only few months in different TD branch near where I live when I handed over the money I said please kindly check the cash and she said itâs $550 dollars. And because I already had a bad experienced with them I checked it right away and to my disappointment the teller only put $500. To my dismay I called her attention right away but she doesnât want me to make a big scene and said sheâll going to correct it right away. I donât know but feels like something is going wrong with their system and these were intentional.
@perlitacananzi9466Now you can't have a bank account an america
@geno4207Now this is normal in Canindia (formally known as Canada). Td bank CEO is indian.
@NoName-n6h2xThere is no fixed amount of wealth that satisfies a person. What matters is not the quantity one possesses, but the distance between what one has and what one expects. Satisfaction is relative, it depends on the horizon of one's desires.
This is why, Schopenhauer argues, riches often fail to produce contentment. As circumstances improve, expectations expand alongside them. New possibilities become necessities, and what once seemed extraordinary soon becomes ordinary.
He compares wealth to seawater the more one drinks, the thirstier one becomes.
The psychology of desire is elastic. Gains alter our standards, losses force them downward. Human beings adapt to both fortune and misfortune far more quickly than they imagine.
This explains why prosperity so often disappoints. The object is attained, but the horizon has already moved.
TD bank is terrible
@Mabelo-ec5uqWhatâs the point of having a bank, no notification and no protection.
@geoffreypleavin5268Canada Trust, Toronto Dominion. My father died, had deposited 1000 dollars, in a savings account for me, in 1978, he passed in the 2020s. Records of bank statements lead me to the amounts in his savings and the savings he aside for me. When I contacted TD, they informed me, of a CC amount owing, and that they would be taking the savings, and putting it towards the CC. My father, had insurance on his CC, if he passed, it was paid...TD Denied the insurance, because he could not sign, to appropriate the insurance, I said, he is deceased, how could he be able to sign?... they showed me how it is written for insurance and it actually does say, the insured, must be able to write or sign their name...TD is a scammer, thief and needs be investigated to the full extent of Federal Banking Laws
@IAmRealEyesNakapag retero na nga ngayon balik kayod na naman sila nanay dahil sa mga scammer.. kawawa naman.. hopefully makuha lang nila balik yung pera..
@MsKRReyThat's the worst!
@MsKRReyBanks need to step up their security game! With hackers getting more creative, it's on them to protect our sensitive info, especially when they're profiting from our money.
@Anitad11There's a lesson here...don't ignore your banking information. I may be 70 years old, but once a day I get on my iPad and get on the TD banking app and look for any discrepancies.
Haven't found any, but if I see anything suspicious, I'll be in the bank before closing time!
Keep your money in a safe box in your home and đđżthe banks
@philipc9664Iâm so sorry :((
@BradenEACheck recently hired employees from India.
@tombruigom7639It was an inside job. It is time to pass legislation making BANKS responsible for online bank thefts. To be clear: If customers are electronically robbed, BANKS must be held accountable.
@teenahweenah2608They use â privacyâ when it convenient .
@HumptydumptysfallIt's just numbers on a screen ya push around anyway. The numbers don't actually mean anything.. except for whatever you've assigned to it in yer heads. But the money doesn't belong to you... EVER lol. Money belongs to the bank. You are just a slave chasing money over building your family's longevity. How many middle-class taxpayers creates a tent city? 1 taxpayer.
How many homeless do the middle-class employees create? Hundreds of thousands more across generations. Karma is a beautiful space.

@chopstixxzItâs an etransfer and TD can trace it quickly. They wonât. Why? Because they know where the money went.
@qxezwcsINSIDE JOB.
@growthwealthmindsetnowTD: "we investigated ourselves, and found no problems on our side". BOYCOTT!!!
@mooseheadbeer777get a lawyer and sue them for the amount and much more for distress and so on. this isn't their fault like for falling for a scam. they didn't give their info to anyone. and no alerts. banks fault. i always get alerts.

@nonoyskie5141TD also screwed us around on my sonâs insurance for his mortgage. I wouldnât trust him with anything after what they did to my family after my son passed away.
@secheltsallySounds like fraud... on there part. Very common in phillipines
@OafSiteTD is the worst bank on the planet. When I was told by the Canadian government to stay home and not make money because of symptoms of covid. TD were calling 8 times a day. Emails. Texts. Up until covid I had the best credit you could possibly get. The stress level they added in such a difficult time without remorse. When I asked why the harrassment? They said when you go one payment behind a computer autodiales until you answer and then you're forwarded to an operator. Oh so because it's a computer it's not harassment and it's ok? I closed all of my accounts since. After buying 3 new vehicles with them. When the current one is paid off next year I will NEVER NEVER EVER DO BUISNESS WITH TD AGAIN, NEVER. Just walking past a TD leaves a sour taste in my mouth
@SgTSlAugHteR613Inside job for sure.
@ggsdude1It may or may not be the bank's full responsibility. On-line access has a few stages before the bank's SSL security measure kicks in. Their log-in could be easily intercepted before it even gets to the bank's web site, especially if they access the account on public wifi (Starbuck?). So my advice to any of you who do on-line banking a lot - GET A VPN SERVICE. It is cheap ($10 a month) and it pretty much bullet-prove your IP packets against any intercept.
Another measure to take is password protection. Many of you probably save your password somewhere easy to use (yahoo emails, Google Cloud, ...) these places can easily be hacked into. Spend some money for a good password manager ($40 a year). The little investment to protect thousands of dollars is a no-brainer.
Lastly, I am not sure if the elder couple had been phished without even knowing it? Or they are withholding that mishap? ... Too many ways you can be compromised. Look, on-line banking is convenient. But if you are not fully apt for tech and internet, it will be a double-edge sward. Just drive to the bank and do your banking.
PS - many said it is fraud by the bank - maybe. But to be impartial and logical, that suspicion can be on the customer too - not to say it is my believe - since only people with password could do those transactions, who is to say the customers didn't falsely report the theft?
WHAT IN THE HELL IS WRONG WITH TD, I HEAR SO MANY SCAMS THROUGH TD!!!!
@debman-c5bHmm maybe I should close my account that I have had for 25 years
@BorderlineBanterPodcastsAll banks are crooks just look at those outrageous quarterly profits
