The under 2,000 a month figure is realistic but it lives and dies on where you land. Lisbon and Cascais rents have basically caught up to other Western European capitals, while a place like Coimbra, Braga, or inland Alentejo can cut your housing cost in half for the same lifestyle. The hidden saver most people miss is eating like a local. A prato do dia lunch at a tasca runs 8 to 10 euros for soup, main, and coffee. Healthcare through the SNS plus a cheap private top-up is also far less than people expect coming from the US.

Honest take. Lisbon and Porto centre are now genuinely expensive but the rest of the country still works. Inland Alentejo, Beira, Trás‑os‑Montes — you can still find a 2 bed for 500€. The catch is you need basic Portuguese to live well outside the bubble cities, and almost no expats prepare for that. The country is more affordable than the headlines suggest if you don't lock yourself into the same 3 postal codes everyone else is fighting over.

Housing cost in Portugal is insane. Don’t let anyone else tell you otherwise. The quality of the housing is poor as well. It is 35% more expensive than it should be according to the data from the EU. It’s great to visit but not to live anymore. $800 to $1000 USD per square foot for something more modern in a decent location near the big cities.

Hi I am still living in the Algarve for less about 12000 a year,yes it has got more expensive but the country has improved. Is it still worth it while I say the best years have gone. The only way to get prices down is to tell your viewers that they are not going to pay that much for the market to correct its self.

Of course, the price for having a car will start eating into what you would save. I definitely would love to visit Portugal someday although I'm not sure if I would live there though. As long as you don't live in the big cities, you can still live cheaply. Who wants to live in the big cities anyway? Here in Central Portugal, it's still possible.
