The bureaucracy is genuinely the hardest part. But there's a pattern most people don't tell you: NIF first, then bank account, then AIMA. Skip the order and you end up waiting months longer. The language is the other wall — European Portuguese sounds nothing like Brazilian and catches everyone off guard. But the small wins compound fast. Once you start understanding the shopkeepers without asking them to repeat, something shifts.

Lisbon: full of non-European immigrants, Porto- despite of it's beauty it lost it's "feel" as it it just too "touristy". Rural places are my favourite there.

Well my wife is Brazilian, and I lived with her for 6 years near Sao Paulo. We are definitely used to the bureaucracy and waiting. And she speaks Portuguese, so we got that covered. We are in our 50's and money is not an issue, so I think we will take a closer look at south Portugal.

Portugal is only great for a holiday or retirement. For young people or immigrants, it has a crap economy and low wages. Rent is very high in the cities. They don't build new large, 30-plus-storey residential buildings, so there isn't enough old low-rise housing to absorb new immigrants and tourism. Higher demand = higher prices.

It wouldn't be so bad if renters would make the slightest effort to hold the line on rents. But dumb Americans will leave their home where rent is $2k, and happily pay $1k in a country where the locals were paying $375.

Well as a British citizen....I was seeing article after article about not being welcome???? Well I can tell you ....I have been overwhelmed by the welcoming local people..support...generosity...but and there is a but...learn the language and embrace the culture and be part of the community. And ...be present air bnb ??? Buying up properties and flipping for a profit...not exactly going to endearing to the locals. They invariably are kind and supportive people. My personal experience.
