Live coverage from the counting center after polls closed in the Makerfield by-election in northern England. Labour's Andy Burnham, the mayor of Greater Manchester, is seeking a seat in the House of Commons. If Burnham wins, he could challenge embattled Prime Minister Keir Starmer for leadership of the Labour Party and the country. He is facing Reform UK, a hard-right party led by Nigel Farage, which is hoping to show that the longtime Labour stronghold is fertile ground for its anti-immigration message, with potentially major consequences for British politics. The district has elected Labour lawmakers for 120 years, but Burnham is not assured of victory; Reform UK won 24 of 25 council seats contested in local elections in the area last month.
The Scottish Conservatives are optimistic about their chances of winning Aberdeen South, the BBC is reporting. Tom Gordon from the Scottish Daily Mail is hearing the same thing. Paul Hutcheon from the Daily Record says the SNP, who are defending the seat, are “anxious”.
